AGENDA : TYPICAL PROBLEMS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION TO BIM AND OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS. OVERVIEW OF BIM PROCESS AND OUTCOMES BEST PRACTICES BIM PROCESS WORKFLOW GUIDANCE UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT BIM USAGES AND STAGES OF IMPLEMENTATIONS EVALUATING MODELING METHODS AND APPLICATIONS FOR ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS`
TYPICAL PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Lot of Challenges Poorly Coordinated Design Documents Change Order and Reworks Delays & Cost Overruns. Reluctance in adoption of new technology Poor Planning and Project Delays Comunication within the teams
TYPICAL PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Poorly Coordinated Design Documents When a mismatch in design documents then a poor decision comes up. In a worse case situation, effort ( time, cost, and quality) may be expended towards repairing that problem. Manual Design Coordination Manual (Left) Vs BIM Design Coordination (Top)
TYPICAL PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Change Orders & Delay Cost Overuns Change Orders/Variation Order : Inability to visualize the final product at the design phase leads to changes in design in the construction phase cousing delay and extra cost.
TYPICAL PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Reluctance in adoption of new technology Little innovation has happened in engineering and construction firms over the last 15 years, says one participant in KPMG s 2016 survey of project owners and construction engineers and professionals. This has to change, and they need to drive the innovation in order to stay competitive. MX3D is planning to build a 15m long bridge using robots Omer Haciomeroglu s ERO Concrete De-construction Robot
TYPICAL PROBLEMS IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Poor Planning and Project Delays Couse of delay : Inaccurate time estimation Poor site management Old technology Natural disaster Unforeseen site condition Shortage of material Delays caused by subcontractors Improper equipment Inaccurate cost estimation Change in drawings Change order Organizational cahnges Regulatory changes
TYPICAL PROBLEM IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Comunication within the teams Over the wall syndrome, Less coordination between the design team is resulting in poor quality of work.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS Building information modeling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. BIM is an intelligent model-based process that provides insight to help you plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure. Autodesk
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS BIM Interpretation Mortenson VDC study. BIM = Building Information Models From our perspective, BIM is a 3D model or the noun. BIM has two attributes. The first is the geometry or 3D object. second is the associated data of the object, like the manufacturer specifications, size, location.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS When BIM is described as a process, it translates into VDC. Mortenson VDC study. BIM Example: Here is the model of the door. What makes this BIM is the attributes like the length, width, and height, manufacturer, etc. the 3D model + the information = smart objects or BIM. When the information changes, the model changes which also means that it is parametric Our design partners develop a building information model in order to extract 2D contract drawings or the design intent.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS Mortenson VDC study. VDC = Virtual Design and Construction VDC is a verb or taking action on BIM. From Mortenson's perspective, VDC is simply a visual management methodology using BIM as part of our proven construction analysis and work processes.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS Virtual Design Construction Virtual Construction is getting to build the project twice: one on the computer screen and once out at jobsite. If we construct our model in the same way that we are going to build the project, we are also able to coordinate it, schedule it, and estimate it.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS BIM and VDC An optimized schedule results when the each production step or construction trade flows through the locations at nearly the same rate. Managing to that schedule on-site, the contractor can detect and correct any disruptions or delays The General Contractor in charge of the project receives 3D BIMs (building information models) from the design team, the engineers, and the sub-contractors. For something even as simple as a concrete column, the team can learn the quantities for rebar, formwork, concrete, and surface cladding.
INTRODUCTION TO BIM & OVERVIEW OF BIM IMPLEMENTATIONS BIM and VDC The outcomes of effective BIM and VDC use by the project stakeholders are earlier, better informed decision that lead to higher predictability of time, cost and quality of the product or customer value. Figure 1: Mortenson Construction study results 4D analysis from construction project

BIM PROCESS WORKFLOW GUIDANCE
BIM PROCESS WORKFLOW GUIDANCE BENEFIT OF BIM PROCESS 20% reduction in build costs 33% reduction is costs over the lifetime of the building 47% to 65% reduction in conflicts and re-work during construction 44% to 59% increase in the overall project quality 35% to 43% reduction in risk, better predictability of outcomes 34% to 40% better performing completed infrastructure 32% to 38% improvement in review and approval cycles Figure 5 - Taken from BluEnt
BIM PROCESS WORKFLOW GUIDANCE BIM Implementation Plan 1. It includes the current project status; stakeholder analysis; current method for design coordination, progress monitoring and cost analysis; and the general project risks and needs. 2. The BIM knowledge and experience of project stakeholders should be examined and realistic BIM goals should be set. 3. Combining the BIM capabilities of stakeholders and the BIM goals for the project, a responsibility matrix may be developed to define the activities, responsibilities and roles of each participating stakeholder. 4. Efficiency is achieved by a drive to continuously improve. Thus, the need for knowledge transfer and training should be examined. Ideally BIM training and knowledge exchange will take place on-the-job. 5. With complex loops of information exchanges comes the need for maintaining a consistent workflow. It may be an iterative process before all parties agree on a common work methodology, but it is essential to establish a protocol that is followed throughout the project life-cycle. 6. A realistic BIM implementation schedule should be developed and aligned with the overall project execution schedule. 7. A designated BIM Manager (internal or external) should be integrated in the structure of a project organization with the consent of all parties. This gives the manager enough authority and responsibility to drive the BIM implementation process.
UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT BIM USAGES Building Information Modelling (BIM) Deliverables The BIM models get detailed as the project scope get better defined into the different project life cycle stages. The Level of Detail (LOD) of a BIM models start at LOD100 at the Concept Design or Pre-Design Stage all the way to LOD500 at the As-Built Stage.
UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT BIM USAGES BIM model types delivery the output required at a particular time in the project HOCHTIEF ViCon defines six important model types Different levels of information are desired by project participants at different stages of the project.
