INSTRUCTOR GUIDE Building Shell Sealing Materials DELIVERY Lecture PowerPoint Slide 30 PROCEDURE Introduction of lesson topic and procedures Explain briefly the importance of building shell sealing - Building sealing is a primary activity of weatherization. It is a simple action but one that is necessary for energy savings Discuss the materials of sealing - Caulking - Weatherstripping - Glazing -Glass types -Dual glazed windows -U values This is background information - Review R-value Types of caulking Latex Silicone- water proof Solvent based - oil based not used in most programs Polyurethane One part foam Explain that there are many different types of caulking, but only a few are used in most programs. Acrylic latex with silicone is the primary material. Silicone is next and usually where large expansion is needed. Silicone does not do well in ultraviolet light. Polyurethane is used where there is large expansion and exposed to the elements. Areas of weatherstripping Jamb Door bottom Threshold Show the sample of weatherstripping. Emphasize that the rigid gasket type is the one used in the program. Discuss the door bottom and threshold combination. TIME 5 min. 50 min.
INSTRUCTOR GUIDE Building Shell Sealing Materials - Page 2 DELIVERY Lecture PowerPoint Instructor Note Sheet PROCEDURE Discuss glazing materials - Single strength glass - Double strength glass - Safety glass laminated glass tempered glass Explain that single and double strength glass is cut to size on site. Glass cutting is a skill that will practiced in the lab. Tell the students the standards for safety glass, 24 from a door, or 18 from the floor. Have students write down locations and feasibility lists. Give students time to copy from PowerPoint. Do not pass out list. The act of note taking will reinforce the location and feasibility standards. Break TIME 50 min. 10 min.

Basic Weatherization Conservation Measures & Efficiency Caulking, Weatherstripping, Gaskets and Glazing Repair Instructor Lecture Notes Answers Caulking 1. Purpose of caulking To seal air leaks and gaps in the building envelope. No break in the envelope, no caulking. 2. Types of Caulking 1. Acrylic latex caulking - water based, most used, also with silicone 2. Silicone caulking not paintable, water proof, sticks to glass. Different material types, not good in UV light. 3. Polyurethane - best adhesion and cohesion (elastic) properties, solvent based clean up, sticks to everything, expensive. 4. Fire rated caulk - red, used in heat applications. 5. Acrylic and silicone most used 6. Butyl - rubber based 7. Foam in a can 3. Continuous and free of voids The standard of caulking application continuous bead, no gaps on the sides. 4. Push and pull methods Methods of caulking application, pushing caulking in gap or pulling. I prefer pulling. 5. Caulking tools Caulking gun, putty knife, rag, striker (opp.) water for tooling, caulking gun cut and pierce. 6. Penetrations and protrusions Places where you might caulk - under sink, conduit through wall cable, doors and windows. 7. Large cracks Standards - largest crack is 5/8 wide, need a backer rod. BR used to fill large gaps so caulking does not touch 3 sides, 2 sides only. Over ¼ backer rod. Hourglass shape. 1
Weatherstripping 1. Purpose of weatherstripping To prevent infiltration around doors (and windows). 2. Types of weatherstripping a. Jamb weatherstripping Show samples of common and recommended types. Talk about where and when each is used and what we use in the program. b. Threshold Many types preferred type u-door bottom and aluminum saddle. L shaped door bottom also used. Do not use saddle gasket. Show pictures and samples. c. Window weatherstripping Are not done in this program. 3. Conditioned vs unconditioned space Only weatherstrip between conditioned and unconditioned space, such as entry door to outside, door between garage and living space. Unconditioned space is open to the outside. Glazing and Windows 1. Types of windows Casement, double hung, slider, louver windows, single lite, multi lite, single glazed, dual glazed, high performance windows. Double hung are the ones we see the most of and need to fix. 2. Types of Glass a. Safety Glass Tempered glass - heat treated to break into little pieces, laminated glass- 2 sheets glued to a piece of plastic (car windshield) 2
b. Single and double strength glass Glass used for replacement - glass we can cut, mostly use double strength, thickness the difference 3/32 to 1/8 3. Glazing Safety Glass is sharp, will cut you, use gloves, eye protection. Carry glass correctly, long sleeves. 4. Glazing Points Pieces of metal pushed into wood to hold glass in place, 2 from corners, 8 apart 5. Glazing Putty Compound used to seal glass to sash. Use glazing points to hold glass, does not harden fast. DO Not use caulking. Sometimes it comes in tube. We will used old school way. 6. Dual glazed, low E windows High performance modern window. 2 pieces of glass, vacuum, low e-e film between. 7. U-Value U-factor also called conductivity rating for windows, comparable to r-value, (1/R).32 good number for windows. Will change due to climate. Cover Plate Gaskets 1. Feasibility Only install gaskets between conditioned and unconditioned space. Usually on outside walls. Gaskets 1/8 closed cell foam. 3
