Weatherize your way to comfort In this guide 4 Understanding weatherization 5 The basics of home insulation 6 Insulation and windows 8 Finding a qualified contractor 9 Weatherization products 10 Energy IQ The condition of your home s outer shell is what determines how fast it will lose warmth in the winter and how much it will shield you from heat in the summer. Many homes built before 1980 energy codes were in place may have thin, leaky windows and only one layer of wood between the occupants comfort and the outdoor climate. What does weatherizing mean? When you improve the enclosure around your home, you are weatherizing. This includes adding insulation in your attic, floors and walls; improving your windows; and sealing leaks. This blanket of warmth adds protection all around your home and can significantly reduce your energy use. The benefits of weatherizing your home with properly installed insulation and windows include making your home: Warmer in the winter, by trapping the heat in. Cooler in the summer, by blocking the heat and keeping the sun s rays out. More comfortable, because drafts and cold surfaces are reduced. Quieter, by providing a buffer from the sounds outside your home. More energy-efficient, cutting down your bills and benefiting the environment. More valuable when it s time to sell. Could your home benefit from a weatherization upgrade? About Puget Sound Energy Puget Sound Energy is Washington state s oldest local energy company. We serve 1.1 million electric customers and more than 760,000 natural gas customers in 10 counties. For more information, visit pse.com. Also follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Was your home built prior to 1990? Does your home cool down quickly in the winter? Does your furnace seem to run a lot to maintain an even temperature? Are your floors cold? Is the air in your heating registers too cool or are certain rooms cold? Do you have water condensing on your windows or other moisture problems? 2 3
Understanding weatherization Insulation is a building material that acts like a blanket or coat for your home to preserve the heat that you pay to produce. It is installed to fill empty cavities in your attic, floors and walls and around your ductwork and pipes. Insulation is measured in terms of R-value. This relates to how much the insulation resists having heat escape from your home. Insulation is usually the most cost-effective, energy-efficient investment in terms of value gained per dollar spent. Basics of home insulation Key features of windows that affect energy use include the frame (e.g., metal, vinyl, fiberglass or wood), the number of panes of glass, how they are constructed (e.g., doublepane with argon-filled gap) and special coatings that affect heat loss and the amount of heat from the sun that enters your home. Efficient Window (U-factor,.30 or lower) Before Without insulation, heat escapes to the outside. These three factors help stop the heat from escaping through your windows. Two panes Furnace Attic Heat escapes Rooms Gas between panes Low-E coating (invisible) After Insulation and good windows provide a blanket of warmth around your home and your furnace uses less energy! Window efficiency is measured by U-factor. This relates to how much the window allows heat to escape from your home. A lower U-factor is better. An old metal-frame, single-pane window is close to U-1.0. Better windows are available today and, when installed correctly, are closer to U-.30 (making them more than three times better at reducing heat loss). Energy tip PSE may have rebates available for weatherization. For more information, visit pse.com/insulation or call a PSE Energy Advisor at Energy tip During cooler months, open shades and curtains to allow sunlight to warm the inside of your home. Close shades and curtains at night to help keep warm air in your home. Reverse this strategy during the summer. Shades or drapes that fit tightly at the bottom and sides will be the most effective. 4 5
Insulation and windows Insulation and windows that are correctly installed will save energy and provide years of comfort. Incorrectly installed insulation or windows won t save energy and could cause poor air quality and moisture-related problems. A good-quality installation includes the following: 1. Moisture control Moisture from cooking and bathing, as well as things like cracks around windows and dryer hoses not directed outside, can make insulation ineffective and cause mold and mildew. Ways to control moisture include: Using proper venting in the attic and underfloor. Don t block existing attic or crawl space venting with new insulation. Covering the dirt in the crawl space with plastic. Making sure bath fans and dryer hoses vent directly to the outside, not to attic and crawl spaces. Use your fans whenever you are showering or producing mist. 2. No gaps in insulation or around windows When contractors install insulation, it is very important that they do a thorough job. If there are gaps that expose bare wood, or if there are gaps around holes that are cut for lighting fixtures or wiring, they can significantly affect your comfort and costs. Insulation should fill the cavity neatly and not be stuffed, rolled or crushed. Energy tips Test your fans and make sure they work. If your bath fan can t hold up a two-ply sheet of toilet paper, it s not working well enough. Seal up leaky drafts around windows and doors with weather-stripping, caulking and door sweeps. 3. Fixing leaky ductwork Ducts carry hot air from your furnace to the registers in your rooms. It s not uncommon for leaks to cause more than 25 percent of the hot air to escape before reaching your rooms. That means more than a quarter of the money you spend to heat and cool your home could be vanishing into thin air. Duct sealing fixes this problem by: Reconnecting equipment that has become disconnected and is blowing hot air into your crawl space. Repairing gaping holes. Using duct mastic (not duct tape) to thoroughly seal joints. Before Leaky joints 4. Window installation with careful framing and moisture control Modern windows stay warmer to the touch, so moist air is less likely to condense on them, and when you sit next to them, you ll feel more comfortable. Proper window installation techniques prevent water from the outside (e.g., driving rain, sprinkler water) from seeping into the wall cavity around the perimeter of the window. Make sure the contractor explains how he or she will ensure that the window will not leak water into the wall. Techniques include: Using the proper sealants. Using flashing materials that direct water to drain toward the outside of your walls, not toward the inside. After Attic Rooms Collapsed duct Disconnected from house (blowing into crawl space) Attic Rooms Ductwork is repaired and leaks are sealed. 6 7
Finding a qualified contractor When choosing contractors, make sure they are licensed, insured and bonded. In addition, they should secure all necessary permits to ensure that equipment is installed in accordance with applicable safety codes. A quality home improvement purchase requires both the right product and the right contractor. To find a contractor, call a PSE Energy Advisor at or visit pse.com/can. What do I ask for? When you call a contractor, say: I d like to get an estimate for weatherizing my house. I want R-49 insulation in my attic, R-30 in my floor and at least R-13 in my walls. I want ENERGY STAR qualified windows with a U-factor of.30 or lower. I d like to reduce drafts and duct leakage and make my home more comfortable, efficient and healthy. I want to test my home to understand how much heated air is leaking to the outside and how quickly it is leaking. Weatherization products Insulation products Fiberglass and cellulose fiber are the two most common attic insulation materials. Fiberglass is made of billions of strands of extruded glass fibers packed into batts. Cellulose consists of ground-up newspaper material, which is then treated with fire-retardant chemicals. Both types work well. Contractors usually blow the insulation material into wall and attic cavities with a hose and install batts in floor cavities. Floor Cold air enters the house through uninsulated floors. Ideally, the living space is completely surrounded by insulation except where there are windows and doors. This table shows the recommended efficiency levels for each part of your home. Foundation Insulated Uninsulated If you have this: Upgrade to this: R-0 to R-19 attic (up to 6 ) insulation R-0 floor Floor insulation falling down Garage ceiling R-0 R-0 wall Ducts that leak Bare metal ducts Metal-framed double-pane windows Single-pane windows R-38 to R-49 (approximately ) R-30 to R-38 (approximately ) R-30 to R-38 (approximately ) Blow full R-11 to R-19 (depending on wall stud size) Sealed and tested ducts R-11 insulation for ducts ENERGY STAR qualified U-.30 or lower ENERGY STAR qualified U-.30 or lower R-2 simple wood door R-15 insulated metal door Window products The two key factors to shop for include U-factor (also known as U-value) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). Choose a window with a U-factor of.30 or lower. If you need to block summer heat, look for products whose SHGC is less than.4. If you want the sun to help heat your house, look for products whose SHGC is up to.8. Other features include coatings on glass or plastic films within the window assembly that can significantly reduce ultraviolet (UV) and other solar radiation, which causes fading of fabrics and furnishings. Efficient windows often have coatings (such as Low-E coatings) that improve their efficiency with a minimal loss of visible light (compared to older tints and films). 8 9
Start your search for savings energystar.gov efficientwindows.org Energy IQ Low-emittance (Low-E) window These windows have a transparent coating that helps reflect radiant heat back into your home. Low-E glass saves energy and improves comfort, especially if you have large windows. R-value This is a measure of how much a wall, ceiling or floor resists heat transfer. So the higher the R-value, the better insulated and more comfortable the room will tend to be. R-values range from R-0 (no insulation) to R-49 (an attic with approximately 16 inches of insulation). Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) This is a measure of a window s shading ability. A lower number will protect you more from the summer sun. Values may range from.2 to.8. If you are mainly interested in reducing your cooling needs in the summer, choose a SHGC of less than.4. U-factor (or U-value) This is a measure of how something conducts heat, that is, lets it go through. A lower U-factor window is better at keeping you comfortable. Single-pane windows are approximately U-1.0. Most building codes and ENERGY STAR standards require windows to have a U-factor of at least U-.30. Weatherization This is the process of improving the enclosure around your home. This includes adding insulation in your attic, floors and walls; upgrading your windows; and sealing leaks. 10 PSE customer Brianna Werre 11
