1 Aesthetic value: The remodel of this stair was vital to opening up this space. The existing closed-in stair was removed and in its place is now a light-colored maple open riser stair with glass railings, without posts. Stair safety: Small riser bars that were added under the treads close the space between to less than 4 and the guardrail was installed between stringers remove fall risk. Stair is anchored into walls with hidden fasteners. Quality of workmanship: The stair was made with clear maple treads and stringers, and low iron tempered glass mounted into the stringers without additional channel. Wire brushed 316 stainless steel railing is mounted on glass for floating appearance. Technical challenge: Stair is supported by central post to the floor under stacked stringers for a small foot print. Stringers were all pre-grooved for glass installation and guardrail contains triangular glass set in upper and lower stringers. Entry 48

2 2018 StairCraft Awards Aesthetic value: Stairway provides a transitional flavored focal point to this barn that was renovated into a house. Configuration fits cohesively into the overall layout of the room while having a hefty feel coinciding with the timbers. Stair safety: Safe and comfortable stride throughout various turns and landings. Newels mortised to the stringers offer a sturdy balustrade. Quality of workmanship: Solid hardwood construction with no veneer. Joinery of newels and stringers provide a very sound and freestanding structure. Technical challenge: Laying out a stairway that fits between the existing angled timber and the side wall, with sufficient headroom at the low roof, and also provides headroom under the upper landing at the door opening. 3 Best Renovation Stairway Aesthetic value: Why is it stair builders always have the worst stairs in their homes? Finally decided to rip mine out. Used white oak box newels that notch down into the floor system with custom welded wrought iron panels Stair safety: All type 2 handrails meet the graspability requirements Quality of workmanship: Floating stair was laminated out of plywood and then wrapped in drywall. Spindles are 2 ½ round bars banded together so each hole is actual 2 holes side by side Technical challenge: Getting the white oak steps to match the white/grey tones that were in the laminated floor was fun. 4 Aesthetic value: Transformation from original carpet grade stairs to new contemporary stair with integrated lighting creating a modern atmosphere. Stair safety: Comfortable stair with mid-landing. Typical rise and run for ease of travel Quality of workmanship: Special attention to material and craftsmanship. The use of Starphyre glass creates the illusion of an open system Technical challenge: Ensuring the structural integrity of the existing framing would be capable of receiving the new stair system. Additional beams and bearing points were required. Entry 51

5 Aesthetic value: The foyer in this 1300 SF beach side condo was transformed from carpeted stairs and an entry closet to an open floating stair creating the contemporary ambience of this completely renovated home. Stair safety: The original 9 tread run was extended to 10 with the redesign along with all other elements that were brought up to meet the current code requirements. Quality of workmanship: All aspects of the stair, treads and railings were specified and refined to meet the demanding requirements of the Interior Designer for the project. Technical challenge: Building a precision cantilevered stair in a 1970 s structure with 2x4 walls in a stairwell that was not square added to the complexity of this already challenging stair design. 6 Aesthetic value: Four story grand staircase is quintesential element of historic 1877 Adelphi Hotel. Reconstructed to allow the existing walnut balustrade to be reinstalled. All existing moldings were reproduced to match curved inside corners and walls. Stair safety: We were required to raise the existing handrail 12" to commercial height. We added 5/8" powder coated iron rods between the balusters and 8" kinked steel beam under the new stairs and landings. Quality of workmanship: The stairs landed perfectly, the entire handrail fit to within a fraction of an inch. Modified the original walnut octogon newel and balusters to look unchanged. Hand carved curved moldings, hand rubbed polyurathane finish. Technical challenge: `Labeling and salvaging all the handrail materials, accurately measuring the existing landings and stair lengths, designing steel beams to make sure they didn't interfere with wood. The single biggest challenge was the height. Entry 53
