1 3M TM Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 Product Data Sheet Product Description Key Features Supersedes: New 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 is a two component elastomeric polyurethane foaming adhesive. 3M Adhesive CR-20 is specifically designed to provide outstanding adhesive properties as well as controlled gap fill without lifting insulation boards. The A and B components are dispensed from two prepressurized disposable cylinders utilizing 3M s two-component disposable foam applicator. 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 is specifically designed to adhere a variety of insulation board stock to various roof substrates in both new and recover applications. It can also be used to adhere insulation board to insulation board where multiple layers are required. The adhesive is applied in a bead form directly to the substrate. The insulation board is placed onto the adhesive. 3 Limitations Directions For Use Surface Preparation Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use with insulating board stock larger than 1200mm x 1200mm 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for application when ambient or substrate temperatures are below 4 C 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use during inclement weather 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use on wet surfaces 3M Adhesive CR-20 should not be used as a membrane adhesive (eg TPO, EPDM, PVC bonding) 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for application to Aluminium foil backed insulation boards (3M CR-20 bonds well to these boards but adhesion of the foil to the expanded foam insulation can vary) 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use on any roof deck that shows signs of deterioration or loss of structural integrity 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use on excessively dirty or grease laden surfaces 3M Adhesive CR-20 is not recommended for use after the expiration date Lightweight concrete, structural concrete, and plywood: These surfaces must be free of any debris, dirt, oil, grease, and water before applying 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR- 20. Built-ups (BUR) and Modifieds: Surfaces must be free of any debris, dirt, oil, grease, and water. Contact 3M for details. Steel: The upper flange of the steel deck (bonding surface) surfaces must be free of any debris, dirt, oil, grease, and water. On new steel, the shop oil coating must be removed. The bonding surface must be free of any cleaner before applying 3M Adhesive CR-20. Directions For Use- Handling/Application Temperature Equipment Set Up Application Temperature: The temperature of the adhesive should be between C and the surfaces being bonded and ambient temperature should be at 4 C and rising. Temperatures outside this range may affect bonding range, dispensability and performance of the product. Equipment: Using the 3M 2-Component Spray Polyurethane Foam Applicator and Hose Assembly. Equipment Set Up: There are two cylinder tanks per system. The system is comprised of an A cylinder that is RED and a B cylinder that is BLUE. These two cylinders must have matching fill dates to be used together (eg WC9111C). The cylinders can only be used in the upright position (Never open the valves unless the cylinders are upright). The lids on the boxes are designed to shield the cylinders from direct sunlight and keep the product from getting too hot. For this reason, the box lid should remain closed during use. 1) Using the wrench included in the nozzle pack, connect the RED striped hose to the A cylinder. 2) Connect the BLACK striped hose to the B cylinder. 3) Slowly open the cylinder valves and inspect the connections for any leaks. Tighten if needed. Fully open the valves. 4) Activate the trigger, dispensing into a proper waste receptacle, Page 3 of 5

4 Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 until all the air is released from the hoses and a good stream of both chemicals is visible through the applicator orifices. 5) Clean residue from the output tips. 6) Attach the mixing nozzle to the applicator. Insert the bottom tab of the nozzle into the bottom slot of the applicator gun. Secure the top latch by pushing towards the back of the applicator until it snaps into the locked position. Directions For Use Adhesive Test Spray: Adhesive Test Spray: When spraying for the first time, or when starting a new kit, it is recommended to trigger the gun only ½ to ¾ open, until the desired output and spray pattern is achieved. This controllable metering ability is a major advantage of the gun, allowing the user complete control of the flow rate and spray pattern that best fits the application. Apply several test shots on plastic or cardboard before beginning the job. Extremely Important- Mixing Nozzle Exchange When spraying is stopped for more than 1 minute, the mixing nozzle should be removed and replaced with a new nozzle. The chemical in the nozzle will begin to cure and will clog the nozzle when spraying has stopped for more than a few minutes. If the trigger is pulled while a clogged nozzle is on the gun, the chemical from the cylinders (which is under pressure!) will be blocked by the clogged nozzle and will cause a back-up of chemical into the hoses, which is called a crossover. The gun will no longer dispense chemicals in the right proportions and the CR-20 adhesive will not function properly. This situation can be easily avoided by simply changing nozzle when spraying is stopped for more than 1 minute. Directions For Use Application The process to apply the adhesive is a 5 step application method.. 1. Spray adhesive 2. Place boards 3. Leave 4. Walk-in 5. Minimise traffic 1. Spray adhesive The 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 insulation adhesive is applied in rows placed a maximum of 300mm on centre (OC). To dispense foam, point the applicator s nozzle at the surface to be sprayed, holding it approximately ½ m from the surface. Squeeze the trigger and move hand at a speed which delivers the desired adhesive pattern. 2. Place boards Insulation boards are to be placed immediately on the wet adhesive but not walked into place or compressed into the adhesive until the 3M Adhesive CR-20 has begun to thicken and started to develop its initial bond. 3. 5 Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 The time involved in this process depends on the ambient as well as deck surface temperature. The chart below illustrates the approximate time required prior to walking in or adding ballast to the boards. On a typical summer day it s a few minutes. Ambient/Deck Temperature Leave alone time 5 to 15 C 6-10 minutes 16 to 27 C 3-6 minutes 27 to 38 C 1-3 minutes 4. Walk-in After the adhesive has attained its initial bond strength the boards can be walked-in and will be compressed to the deck or substrate exhibiting minimal slippage or movement. 5. Minimise traffic The boards should be exposed to minimum traffic for at least minutes after they have been walked-in-place (depending on temperature). This allows the bond strength to continue to increase and avoids breaking the freshly formed bond. NOTE: Membranes can be applied once the adhesive has achieved sufficient bond strength to the immediate substrate to which it is adhered. It is recommended that the contractor inspect the installed insulation for proper adhesion and re-adhere any boards and/or corners that are not adequately attached. NOTE: Boards that will not lay flat due to cupping, warping or crowning, or surface irregularities of the substrate, should have weights placed on the boards until the 3M Adhesive CR-20 has achieved adequate adhesion to hold the boards in place Cylinder Disposal Cylinder Disposal Disposable cylinders should be disposed of in accordance with local laws. Consult MSDS for more information. Storage Store 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 A and B containers should be stored between 7 C and 32 C Shelf Life Precautionary Information For Additional Information 3M Polyurethane Foam Insulation Adhesive CR-20 has a shelf life of 18 months from date of manufacture by 3M when stored in the original carton at 21 C (70 F) & 50 % Relative Humidity Refer to product label and Material Safety Data Sheet for health and safety information before using the product.
