Tech Student, Vijay Rural Engineering College, Mechanical Department, Nizamabad, India Dr. P. Sampath Rao Professor & HOD, Vijay Rural Engineering College, Mechanical Department, Nizamabad, India ABSTRACT Crane Hooks are highly liable components and are always subjected to failure due to accumulation of large amount of stresses which can eventually lead to its failure. To study the stress pattern of crane hook in its loaded condition, a solid model of crane hook is prepared with the help of CMM and CAD software. Real time pattern of stress concentration in 3D model of crane hook is obtained. The stress distribution pattern is verified for its correctness on an acrylic model of crane hook using Diffused light Polari scope set up. By predicting the stress concentration area, the shape of the crane is modified to increase its working life and reduce the failure rates. Keywords: Crane hook, Curved beam, fatigue failure. Cite this Article: Osman Ashraf Ansari and Dr. P. Sampath Rao, Design and Analysis of Crane Hook for Load Conditions. International Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, 7(5), 2016, pp INTRODUCTION A crane hook is designed to connect with chains and ropes attached to point loads like crates, construction beams, and machinery. The basic function of it is to lift the load, to carry it and to transfer it from one place to another. Sometimes an accident may occur due to stress concentration factor in it so stress analysis is necessary before make it applicable. Nowadays, the design and analysis both are carried out by softwares with the help of Advanced engineering. This article deals with the study of crane hook consists various cross sections as well as the modification of standard hook in which the weight optimization is done by changing cross section [1] and stress analysis is studied in ANSYS editor@iaeme.com

2 Osman Ashraf Ansari and Dr. P. Sampath Rao 2. ANALYSIS OF HOOK WITH RESPECT TO VARIOUS CROSS SECTIONS: The designed models are saved in.igs format and so can be imported in ANSYS workbench in which a Static structural analysis is carried out. The simulation process is then done which includes the generation of meshes by means of FEM(Finite Element Analysis) by taking Tetrahedron element.[6] A single point load (8 tons/ 78480N) is applied which is equally distributed throughout the selected surfaces and required results such as Equivalent stress, strain and total deformation is analysed. The material is selected by default as Structural steel having following characteristics [7]: Table 1 Engineering Material Properties of Structural Steel MECHANICAL PROPERTIES VALUES UNIT YOUNG S MODULUS MPa POISSON'S RATIO SHEAR MODULUS MPa DENSITY 7850 Kg/m3 TENSILE YIELD STRENGTH 250 MPa TENSILE ULTIMATE STRENGTH 460 MPa COMPRESSIVE YIELD STRENGTH 250 MPa 3. ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR STRESS CALCULATION Curved beam flexure formula is used when the curvature of the member is pronounced as in case of hook for different cross sections mathematical analysis of stress [3] = + Where, M=maximum bending moment. Y=Distance between centroidal axis to neutral axis. I=Moment of inertia for different cross sections 76 editor@iaeme.com

CONCLUSION The model that is created in Pro/Engineer wildfire 5.0 and analyzed in Ansys V12.1. The model created in Pro/Engineer is transferred to Ansys through IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) format. The structural analysis has been performed on the model by applying the proposed material properties, boundary conditions and loads. By viewing the results that has been discussed in the early chapter, it can be said that the crane hook model can withstand the proposed loads with considering a factor of safety as 1.2. So, thereafter the designed model can be manufactured or fabricated with extensive testing editor@iaeme.com
