Objectives for this session: Review ventilation design strategies Review multiple installation challenges Discuss YOUR concerns NOTE: Questions are encouraged during this presentation, jump right in! Home Building Technology Services 4 Reasons to ventilate? People- IAQ Building durability Post-weatherization Home Building Technology Services 5 Blower-door testing confirms tightness goals! Home Building Technology Services 6 2

TIGHTER BUILDINGS CHECKLIST ISSUES that should be considered: INDOOR AIR QUALITY * ventilation: fresh air and moisture control COMBUSTION SAFETY * back drafting: sooting and combustion gases Home Building Technology Services 7 Generally speaking; A house is said to have poor Indoor Air Quality when the inside air contains enough of a substance to adversely affect the comfort, health or safety of the occupants Home Building Technology Services 8 Natural draft water heater spillage Home Building Technology Services 9 3

SEVERE back drafting! Home Building Technology Services 10 Moisture sources in homes Construction Bathing Cooking Breathing Plants Pets Lifestyle/hobbies Unsealed sump pits Humidifiers Combustion appliances Some too wet,, some too dry Home Building Technology Services 11 Bathroom issues moisture odors Home Building Technology Services 12 4

Moisture or temperature problem? Home Building Technology Services 13 Pollutant sources in homes Hygiene products Cleaners Cooking Smoking Pets Lifestyle/hobbies Unsealed sump pits Attached garages Combustion appliances Every home will be different Home Building Technology Services 14 Bathroom sources: hygiene products/cleaners Home Building Technology Services 15 5

Laundry room sources: cleaning products/softeners Home Building Technology Services 16 Basement sources: catch all for junk and moisture Home Building Technology Services 17 Ventilation strategies & equipment Spot exhaust Remote spot exhaust & multi-point Balanced flow with Heat and/or ENERGY recovery Home Building Technology Services 18 6

Typical bath exhaust fan doing spot venting Home Building Technology Services 19 Rated for wet location w/gfi protection- mount in shower Home Building Technology Services 20 Bathroom fan spot ventilation wall switch Home Building Technology Services 21 7

Typical bath exhaust fan doing double duty* Home Building Technology Services 22 Bath fan mounted in main part of home Home Building Technology Services 23 Acceptable whole building ventilation control Mounted in the main part of home accessible to the owner. Wire in parallel with bathroom fan or remote spot fan doing double duty. (not 3-way operation) Ventilation system Many control options available- check with vendors Home Building Technology Services 24 8

Broan-Nutone model 744 Home Building Technology Services 25 Can light 4 exhaust duct Home Building Technology Services 26 Broan SmartSense Intelligent Ventilation system Automates their QTXE 80/110 cfm rated fans Uses house wiring to communicate ASHRAE 62.2 ready Home Building Technology Services 27 9

6-inch connection allows for less restrictive ducting Home Building Technology Services 28 X-10 automation technology Home Building Technology Services 29 Common house wiring is used! Home Building Technology Services 30 10

Panasonic Automated fan Low speed continuous cfm High speed boost * 80 cfm * motion sensor * wall switch * adjustable boost off time delay * 1-60 minutes ASHRAE 62.2 ready Home Building Technology Services CFM high speed w/variable continuous Home Building Technology Services 32 Occupancy sensor activation model Home Building Technology Services 33 11

Built in automation/controls Continuous CFM speed control High speed boost time delay Home Building Technology Services 34 The ULTIMATE Man s s fan! Home Building Technology Services 35 Quiet remote in-line fan combination Home Building Technology Services 36 12

Remote mounted exhaust ventilation system Home Building Technology Services 37 Mounting issues Home Building Technology Services 38 Dampers on each branch Home Building Technology Services 39 13

Stack head mounted close to source Home Building Technology Services 40 Very low power draw by fan Home Building Technology Services 41 Stack heads can be used with most remote fans as well as with HRV/ERV s Home Building Technology Services 42 14

Home Building Technology Services 43 Very low power draw by CFL Home Building Technology Services 44 Range hoods should be ducted to the outside Home Building Technology Services 45 15

Venmar S31301LS 2 speed range hood Home Building Technology Services 46 CFL s will fit in cabinet! Home Building Technology Services 47 Low speed power draw High speed power draw Home Building Technology Services 48 16

De-pressurization concerns with exhaust only Applied physics and building science Remember: 1 CFM out = 1 CFM in We know where the air is leaving, where does the air come in? Always comply with code limits for de- pressurization Home Building Technology Services 49 Compact HRV/ERV whole house unit-as small as 70 cfm Home Building Technology Services 50 Very low power consumption! Home Building Technology Services 51 17

Broan ERV90HC: side or top connections Home Building Technology Services 52 BREEZE from RenewAire Home Building Technology Services 53 Pre-filters Home Building Technology Services 54 18

DIRECT MOUNT HRV or ERV now available- no blowers Home Building Technology Services 55 Control has both ASHRAE 62.2 or % time run functions Home Building Technology Services 56 Tandem termination fitting & grille Home Building Technology Services 57 19

Exhaust air out Fresh air in Home Building Technology Services 58 HRV s s and ERV s s have their own controls Home Building Technology Services 59 Line voltage dual function control Home Building Technology Services 60 20

HRV or ERV function: balanced flow with MOISTURE recovery balanced flow with HEAT and/or Tempered air to house Stale air from house Fresh air from outside Stale air to outside Home Building Technology Services 61 At this point we have only spent some MONEY! The only thing that matters is: Does it work how well? Did we meet our design goals? yes/no Home Building Technology Services 62 # 1 problem: Very few people test anything Benefits The ONLY way to know if your equipment is working Learn what does and doesn t work Reduce callbacks Create paper trail Manage expectations Airflow testing Home Building Technology Services 63 21

All ventilation systems must be tested for flow Home Building Technology Services 64 # 2 problem: NASTY restrictive ductwork Exit grille here! Poor ducting installation Home Building Technology Services CFM fan 4 4 from outside grille: tested airflow: 31 cfm for a whopping 39% of rated airflow What was the design airflow? Home Building Technology Services 66 22

All trades must be on the same page: crushed piping courtesy of siding/grille installer Installation problems Home Building Technology Services 67 Removed excess ducting and retested Now have 66 cfm or 83 % of rated flow Design airflow was 50 cfm Home Building Technology Services 68 Smooth bend radius over top plate Home Building Technology Services 69 23

Roof exit can work OK Home Building Technology Services 70 Always provide support for any flex piping Gable end termination Home Building Technology Services 71 Tested airflow from a 110 cfm fan: OUCH! Testing tells all: case closed Home Building Technology Services 72 24

Soffitt guy doesn t t do ducting Any problem with a little extra? Home Building Technology Services 73 # 3 Problem; poor choice of termination grilles Select low restriction types Home Building Technology Services 74 Readout from a 110 CFM rated fan 57% Home Building Technology Services 75 25

Fitting design and manufacturing critical 4 fitting Home Building Technology Services 76 Know your components 3 5/8 actual Home Building Technology Services cfm gain for a 65% % improvement: 95% Home Building Technology Services 78 26

Gable end fitting: very good flow Home Building Technology Services 79 May have to increase duct diameter 4 x 6 transition Duct design issues Home Building Technology Services cfm fan: 26 from outside: tested ed airflow: 1400 cfm - 93% of rated Support flex-pipe on wood Larger diameter fools the fan Home Building Technology Services 81 27

May be able to reduce back down to 4 4 Seal ducting to exit grille Home Building Technology Services 82 This puppy is haul in the mail Good ducting & grilles are the key! Home Building Technology Services 83 THANK YOU CONTACT INFO: Joe Nagan Home Building Technology Services W804 County Trunk ZZ Kaukauna, Wisconsin office cell Jnagan@wildblue.net Home Building Technology Services 84 28

Home Building Technology Services 88 Home Building Technology Services 89 Some programs have adopted the newest Ventilation n Standard: ASHRAE 62.2 What impact does this have? Home Building Technology Services 90 30

ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation requirements Whole building ventilation- per table 4.1a Spot ventilation bathrooms- 50 cfm intermittent or 20 cfm continuous kitchen- 100 cfm hood ducted to outside Home Building Technology Services 91 FLOOR AREA (2ft) CONTINUOUS MINIMUM FLOW BEDROOMS 0-1 TABLE 4.1a BEDROOMS 2-3 BEDROOMS 4-5 BEDROOMS 6-7 BEDROOMS < > > Home Building Technology Services 92 Intermittent systems require a larger flow rate than continuous systems. The flow rate is related to the fractional on-time as noted in the following equation: Q f = Q r / (ef) where: Q f = fan flow rate Q r = flow requirement from table 4.1 e = ventilation effectiveness from table 4.2 f = fractional on-time Home Building Technology Services 93 31

Ventilation effectiveness for intermittent operating systems TABLE 4.2 Daily fractional on-time, f Ventilation effectiveness, e < 35% 0.33 > 35% < 60% 0.50 > 60% < 80% 0.75 > 80% 1.0 Home Building Technology Services 94 EXAMPLE: A fan operated 30% of the time with cycle times of 4 hours ( six cycles per day) with a ventilation air requirement of 40 cfm will have a ventilation effectiveness of 30% ( from table 4.2). The fan flow will have to equal or exceed 404 cfm. 40 cfm / ( 0.33 x 0.30 ) = 404 cfm * Suggest that you design for continuous operation to keep equipment smaller. Home Building Technology Services 95 Popular equipment choices for whole building ventilation/spot to satisfy ASHRAE 62.2 exhaust fan mounted in main part of home remote mounted exhaust fan ducted to home small HRV or ERV remote fan doing double duty* exhaust fan mounted in a bathroom doing double duty* range hood Equipment - overview Home Building Technology Services 96 32
