1 SECTION FLASHING AND SHEET METAL PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 DESCRIPTION A. Work included: Provide all flashing and sheet metal not specifically described in other Sections of these Specifications but required to prevent penetration of water through exterior shell of building. Scope of Work shall be as shown on the Drawings: B. Related work described elsewhere: 1. Selective Demolition Section Adhered PVC Roofing System Section Sealants and Caulking Section QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Standards: Comply with standards specified in this Section. B. Qualification of manufacturer: Prefabricated products used in the work of this Section shall be produced by manufacturers regularly engaged in manufacture of similar items and with a history of successful production acceptable to the Owner. C. Qualification of installers: Use adequate numbers of skilled workmen who are thoroughly trained and experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the specified requirements and the methods needed for proper performance of the work of this Section SUBMITTALS A. General: Comply with provisions of General Conditions. B. Manufacturer's data: Within ten (10) calendar days after receipt of the Notice to Proceed, submit: 1. Complete materials list of all items proposed to be furnished and installed under this Section indicating amount, gauge and/or weight, dimensions, and type. 2. Manufacturer's specifications and other data required to demonstrate compliance with the specified requirements. 3. The manufacturer's recommended installation procedures and the shop drawings, when approved by the Owner, will become the basis for inspecting and accepting or rejecting actual installation procedures used on the Work PRODUCT HANDLING A. Protection: Use all means necessary to protect materials of this Section before, during, and after installation and to protect installed work and materials of all other trades. B. Replacements: In the event of damage, immediately make all repairs and replacements necessary to the approval of the Owner and at no additional cost the Owner. 1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. General: Install sheet metal flashing and trim to withstand wind loads, structural movement, thermally induced movement, and exposure to weather without failing, rattling, leaking, and fastener disengagement. 2 B. Fabricate and install roof edge flashing according to ANSI/SPRI ES-1. C. Thermal Movements: Provide sheet metal flashing and trim that allow for thermal movement to prevent buckling, opening joints, hole elongation, overstressing of components, failure of joint sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. Provide clips that resist rotation and avoid shear stress as a result of sheet metal and trim thermal movements. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss. D. Water Infiltration: Provide sheet metal flashing and trim that do not allow water infiltration to building interior. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 DESIGN A. Standard commercial items may be used for flashing, trim, and reglets, provided all such items meet or exceed the quality standards specified herein. B. Quality standards: In addition to complying with all pertinent codes and regulations, comply with all pertinent recommendations contained in "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual," current edition of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association COUNTER FLASHING A. Provide min. 4 counter flashing at all vertical flashing locations. B. New counter flashing metal shall match the existing metal which it is to be in contact with (.040 mil finish aluminum,.018 stainless steel, 26 gauge galvanized and/or 16 oz copper). If there is no existing metal to match, new counter flashing shall be 26 gauge galvalume with a Kynar (or approved equal) finish. C. Counter flashing cleats, where required, shall be a minimum one gage heavier than the counter flashing material PITCH POCKETS A. Material for pitch pockets for EPDM Roof Systems shall be manufacturer s approved pitch pocket dam material. B. Where manufacturer s components can not be used, material for pitch pockets shall be 16 oz. copper. All joints shall be soldered prior to the installation of stripping/flashing materials. Provide a sample of a 4x4 pitch pocket with the project submittals prior to job start. C. Hoods for pitch pockets shall be 16 oz. copper. All joints shall be soldered. New hoods shall be required at all pitch pan locations. Provide a sample of a pitch pocket hood with the project submittals prior to job start METAL EDGE / FASCIA A. Pre-manufactured metal edge / fascia shall be 24 gauge galvalume with a Kynar (or approved equal) finish. Back-up plates shall be of equal or greater thickness material. Finish shall be minimum 70% Kynar fluorocarbon coating. B. Color shall be selected by the Owner from manufacturer s full range of colors. FLASHING AND SHEET METAL SECTION

3 C. Continuous cleat shall be of equal thickness and material as the metal edge. D. All metal edges shall be in compliance with ANSI/SPRI ES FLOW THROUGH OVERFLOW SCUPPER A. Pre-manufactured overflow scupper shall be designed to work with the new pre-manufactured metal edge. B. Color shall be selected by the Owner from manufacturer s full range of colors GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS A. Materials for new gutters and downspouts shall be 24 gauge galvalume with a Kynar (or approved equal) finish. Finish shall be minimum 70% Kynar fluorocarbon coating. Color shall be selected by the Owner from manufacturer s full range of colors. B. Gutter profile: 6 box style C. Downspout size: 4 x4 D. Material for new hidden gutter straps shall be 2 x 18 gauge galvalume with Kynar (or approved equal) finish. Finish shall be minimum 70% Kynar fluorocarbon coating and shall match the selected gutter color. E. Material for new gutter hangers shall be 2 x 18 gauge galvalume with Kynar (or approved equal) finish. Finish shall be minimum 70% Kynar fluorocarbon coating and shall match the selected gutter color OTHER MATERIALS A. All other materials, not specifically described but required for a complete and proper installation of the work of this Section, shall be new, first quality of their respective kinds, and as selected by the Contractor subject to the approval of the Owner FABRICATION, GENERAL A. Sheet Metal Fabrication Standard: Fabricate sheet metal flashing and trim to comply with recommendations of SMACNA s Architectural Sheet Metal Manual that apply to the design, dimensions, metal, and other characteristics of the item indicated. B. Comply with details shown to fabricate sheet metal flashing and trim that fit substrates and result in waterproof and weather-resistant performance once installed. Verify shapes and dimensions of surfaces to be covered before fabricating sheet metal. C. Form exposed sheet metal Work that is without excessive oil canning, buckling, and tool marks and that is true to line and levels indicated, with exposed edges folded back to form hems. D. Seams: Fabricate nonmoving seams in sheet metal with flat-lock seams. Tin edges to be seamed, form seams, and solder. E. Expansion Provisions: Space movement joints at maximum of 10 feet with no joints allowed within 12 inches of corner or intersection. Where lapped or bayonet-type expansion provisions in Work cannot be used or would not be sufficiently weatherproof and waterproof, form expansion joints of intermeshing hooked flanges, not less than 1 inch deep, filled with mastic sealant (concealed within joints). 4 F. Sealed Joints: Form non-expansion, but movable, joints in metal to accommodate elastomeric sealant to comply with SMACNA standards. G. Separate metal from non-compatible metal or corrosive substrates by coating concealed surfaces at locations of contact with asphalt mastic or other permanent separation as recommended by manufacturer. H. Conceal fasteners and expansion provisions where possible. Exposed fasteners are not allowed on faces of sheet metal exposed to public view. I. Fabricate cleats and attachment devices from same material as sheet metal component being anchored or form compatible, non-corrosive metal recommended by sheet metal manufacturer. Size shall be as recommended by SMACNA manual or sheet metal manufacturer for application but never less than thickness of metal being secured. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 INSPECTION A. Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this Section will be installed. Correct conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the Work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected WORKMANSHIP A. General: 1. Form all sheet metal accurately and to the dimensions and shapes required, finishing all molded and broken surfaces with true, sharp, and straight lines and angles and, where intercepting other members, soldering securely. 2. Unless otherwise specifically permitted by the Owner, turn all exposed edges back 13 mm (1/2"). B Weatherproofing: 1. Finish watertight and weathertight where so required. 2. Make all lock seam work flat and true to line. Make all lock seam and lap seams, when soldered, at least 13 mm (1/2") wide. 3. Make all flat and lap seams in direction of flow. 4. Counter flashing at curbs shall be lapped a minimum of 4" and riveted, and sloped from the penetration to arrest water from laying on the detail. C. Nailing: 3.03 EMBEDMENT 1. Whenever possible, secure metal by means of clips or cleats without nailing through the metal. 2. In general, space all screws not more than 20cm (8") apart, where exposed to the weather, and use neoprene washers. 3. For nailing into brick, use drilled plugholes and plugs. A. Prime metal flanges on all metal components top and bottom with required primer prior to installation. FLASHING AND SHEET METAL SECTION

5 B. Embed all metal in connection with roofs in a solid bed of sealant, using materials and methods described in these Specifications or other materials approved in advance by the Owner. END OF SECTION FLASHING AND SHEET METAL SECTION
