2 Legislation and guidance - National Building Regulations Approved Document E Approved Document E (ADE) gives guidance on how to provide reasonable standards of sound insulation in dwellings and other residential buildings within. The aim of the standard is to improve the acoustic environment by reducing noise transmission both between, and within, all residential dwellings. Therefore, in addition to specifying levels of sound insulation for separating constructions, national Building Regulations Approved Document E also includes a required level of sound insulation for internal constructions. Requirement E2 states: Dwelling-houses, flats and rooms for residential purposes shall be designed and constructed in such a way that (a) Internal walls between a bedroom or a room containing a water closet, and other rooms; and (b) Internal floors provide reasonable resistance to sound. The majority of internal walls and floors must achieve R w 40 db. Element of construction Internal wall between a bathroom, or WC, and a habitable room Internal wall between a bedroom and another room within the dwelling Minimum airborne sound insulation (laboratory test result) R w 40 db 40 db However, internal walls which include a door are exempt from this requirement. Complying with the regulations Pre-Completion Testing is not required for internal wall constructions in England or Wales. Building Control check internal constructions at plan stage to ensure the details specified will meet this required performance. In, housebuilders can follow one of two routes to demonstrate compliance for new-build houses and apartments: Using Guidance s, or Using manufacturers proprietary systems Guidance s Guidance s are shown in this section incorporating British Gypsum products, where appropriate. These details are British Gypsum versions of Guidance s, which, provided they are built correctly, are deemed to achieve the regulatory requirements. 4 Legislation and guidance (cont d) Scotland Domestic Technical Handbook Section 5: Noise On the 1st October 2010 a new version of the Domestic Technical Handbook Section 5: Noise, came into force in Scotland. This version was introduced following the first major review, for over 20 years, of the design performance requirements of previous technical handbooks. Section 5 not only aims to limit sound transmission emanating from attached buildings; from October 2010, it also covers sound from within the same dwelling if occupants are in rooms where they would expect to have some degree of peace and quiet. Standard 5.2 states: Every building, must be designed and constructed in such a way to limit the transmission of source noise from normal domestic type activities, through a wall or floor, between a room and internal space where noise is likely to occur, to a level that will not cause inconvenience to the building occupants. Standard 5.2 applies to an internal wall or floor forming a room in a dwelling, or a room in a residential building, which is capable of being used for sleeping. The majority of internal walls and floors must achieve R w 43 db.
