1 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT PART 1 - GENERAL SECTION STRUCTURAL STEEL 1.1 RELATED SPECIFICATION SECTIONS: A. Bolting of wood to steel, steel anchors for work of other trades, concrete reinforcing steel, steel joists, metal deck, miscellaneous metals (loose lintels, etc.), and installation of loose lintels, embedded steel, etc. 1.2 QUALIFICATIONS: A. Fabricator shall have not less than 5 years experience in fabrication of structural steel for projects of similar scope. B. Steel Erector shall have not less than 5 years experience in the erection of structural steel structures of magnitude similar to the proposed structure. 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE: A. The latest edition of the following regulations, standards, etc. are hereby included in and made a part of these specifications: 1. American Institute of Steel Construction: a. AISC Specification for the Design, Fabrication and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings. b. AISC Code of Standard Practice. c. Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts, by the Research Council on Riveted and Bolted Structural Joints. d. AISC Quality Criteria and Inspection Standards. 2. American Welding Society a. AWS Structural Welding Code. b. AWS Welding Symbols. c. AWS Gas Metal-Arc Welding with CO2 Shielding. d. AWS Non-Destructive Testing Symbols. 3. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM): a. A6, General Requirements for Delivery. b. A325, H. S. Bolts. 1.4 ERECTION TOLERANCES: A. Plumb, level and align individual pieces in accordance with the requirements of the Code of Standard Practice of the AISC. 1.5 SUBMITTALS: Submit shop drawings detailing fabrication and erection of structural steel components. A. Include details of cuts, connections, splices, camber, holes and other pertinent data.

2 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT B. Indicate welds by standard AWS symbols, distinguishing between shop and field welds and show size, length and type of each weld. C. Indicate type, size and length of bolts, distinguishing between shop and field bolts. Identify high-strength bolted slip critical, direct tension or tensioned shear/bearing connections. D. Submit copies of Welder s qualification certifications. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING: A. Deliver structural steel to Project site in such quantities and at such times to ensure continuity of installation. B. Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel members off ground by using pallets, platforms or other supports. Protect steel members and packaged materials from erosion and deterioration. 1. Do not store materials on structure in a manner that might cause distortion or damage to members or supporting structures. Repair or replace damaged materials or structures as directed. 1.7 SEQUENCING, SCHEDULING AND PROCEDURES: A. The Contractor shall review the structural capabilities of areas to be used for lifting devices, material delivery and storage and shall not exceed design loads without taking appropriate steps to compensate for the anticipated loads exceeding design loads. B. Any modifications, temporary or permanent, to the buildings structural frame required to support erection equipment (including trucks, cranes and other devices) and its load shall be made by the Contractor at his own expense and as subject to review and directives of the Architect/Engineer. C. Any redesign by the Contractor for his own convenience requires approval of the Architect/Engineer and is to be paid for by the Contractor. D. Place Contractor s lifting equipment in location approved by the Architect/Engineer. E. The Contractor shall furnish and place any temporary guys, braces or false-work required to stabilize the structural steel during erection and it shall not be removed until the structure is fully erected, including bracing elements provided by other trades such as masonry, and bolted or welded. F. The Contractor shall cooperate fully with authorized personnel making inspections of both shop and field operations. The Contractor will provide access to scaffolds and work platforms and any necessary manpower to assist in the inspection of welding and bolting.

3 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT TESTING AND INSPECTION: A. Owner shall provide an independent testing laboratory to check structural steel erection for compliance with AISC Specifications including Part 6 of Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts. Contractor shall coordinate erection and testing to facilitate construction. B. Inspection will be required of a random selection of 10% of all high strength shop and field bolting. To be acceptable, 95% of all bolts tested shall meet design tension, and no bolt shall test to less than 85% of design tension. If the bolting fails to meet this requirement, bolts shall be rewoked by the Contractor and additional tests of 50% of all bolts shall be made until the above requirements are met. All bolted connections of members and supports of trusses shall be inspected. C. Where field welding has been used for structural connections, testing laboratory will perform visual inspections of a minimum of 50% of welds. Should any welds fail, then 100% of welds shall be inspected. All welded connections of trusses shall be inspected. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS: A. : W shape: ASTM A-992, Others: ASTM A-36. B. High-Strength Bolts: ASTM A325 or ASTM A490. C. Unfinished Bolts: ASTM A307. D. Structural Tubes: ASTM A500, Grade C. E. Pipe: ASTM A501. F. Filler Metal: E70 electrodes or equivalent. Electrodes shall be as recommended by their manufacturers for the position and other conditions of actual use. G. Shop Paint: SSPC-Paint 15, Type I, red oxide. Where steel is exposed (not concealed by ceilings, etc.) the finish shall be compatible with receiving final field painting. Touch-up paint used in the field shall be the same material used for the shop coat. Paint delivered to the job shall be the same material used for the shop coat. Paint shall be delivered to the job in sealed containers clearly marked with manufacturer's name and brand. 2.2 GROUT: A. Non-Metallic, Shrinkage-Resistant Grout: Premixed, factory packaged, ferrous aggregate grout, complying with ASTM C 1107, of consistency suitable for application and a 30-minute working time. 2.3 FABRICATION:

4 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT A. Fabricate structural steel in accordance with minimum requirements of AISC, except as modified or noted in these specifications. B. All members to be free from twists, buckles or open joints. Parts assembled with bolts to be in close contact, except where separators are required. All parts to be accurately made and spaced so when assembled, the parts come together and bolts enter without distortion. C. Standard AISC, latest edition, specifications to be used in determining the connections, unless otherwise shown on drawings, including number of bolts and spacing required. All connections to be bolted or welded and not interfere with architectural clearances. The best shop practices shall be followed for shearing, punching, diameter of bolt holes, spacing, machine riveting, welding, etc. D. Bearing surfaces shall be planed to true beds. Abutting surfaces shall be closely fitted. Tubular sections shall be completely seal-welded at all joints, seams and splices. E. Structural steel shall be provided with all holes for attaching wood, masonry and furring, sash angle clips and other parts. F. Fascia beams and other steel requiring accurate alignment shall be provided with slotted holes and/or washers for aligning the steel accurately. No erection bolts or other fastening parts, joints or rolled stamping names shall show on finished surfaces of exposed steel, exterior or interior. G. Welding to be done by operators qualified by AWS Standards, Welding techniques, appearances and quality shall conform to AWS Standards. Continuous jet welding may be employed at all exposed connections to furnish a smooth weld in lieu of conventional welds that require grinding. H. Loose lintels shall be of a length to provide 8-inch minimum bearing each side of opening, unless otherwise noted on drawings. I. All steel, except that which is to be encased in concrete and that which will be concealed by interior building finishes, shall receive one coat of shop paint. Steel shall be completely covered, except surfaces that are to be field welded. Paint shall be applied to thoroughly cleaned surfaces free of loose mill scale, rust, slag or flux deposits, oil, dirt, etc. Cleaning and painting shall be applied evenly to dry surfaces and shall not have runs, etc. J. Drill or punch holes at right angles to the surface of the metal. Do not make or enlarge holes by burning. Remove burrs resulting from drilling operations. K. Apply one (1) shop coat of paint after cleaning of all rust, scale, and foreign matter. Surfaces shall be dry and clean at time of paint application. 2.4 CONNECTIONS:

5 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT A. All connections shall conform to those shown on the structural drawings or as approved by Architect/Engineer. 2.5 BOLTING: A. Use high strength bolts. B. Size bolts allowing full thread engagement. C. Enter bolts into holes without damaging the thread. D. Oversize and short-slotted holes are subject to approval by Architect/Engineer. If approved for use, standard hardened washers are required to provide adequate bearing area. Place washers on the exposed face of the oversized or short-slotted hole. E. Long-slotted holes are subject to approval by the Architect/Engineer. F. Bolted connections for members with tension or compression loads shown on the drawings are slip-critical. 2.6 WELDING: A. Prior to commencing welding, joint elements are to be bolted or tacked in intimate contact and adjusted to dimensions shown on drawings with allowance for any weld shrinkage. B. Shop splices not shown on drawings will not be permitted. C. Welding shall be performed by welders currently qualified under AWS Standard Qulaification procedures to perform the type of work required. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 ERECTION, INSTALLATION AND APPLICATION: A. Erection shall include setting of all column/bases and erection of all structural steel. Frame shall be erected true and plumb. Temporary bracing to be used wherever necessary to take care of all loads to which structure may be subjected, including erection equipment and operation of same. Such bracing shall remain in place as long as required for safety. As erection progresses, the work shall be securely bolted up to take care of all dead load, wind and erection stresses. Steel shall be erected level or plumb within a tolerance as recommended by AISC Code of Standard Practice. B. Check alignment, elevations, and locations of all anchor bolts. Report to Architect/Engineer all errors and proposed correcting methods prior to proceeding with corrections and base plate setting.

6 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT C. Field correction of fabrication by flame cutting will only be permitted by written prior approval of the Architect/Engineer. D. Base and Bearing Plates: Clean concrete and masonry bearing surfaces of bond reducing materials and roughen surfaces prior to setting base and bearing plates. Clean bottom surface of base and bearing plates. 1. Set base and bearing plates for structural members on wedges, shims or setting nuts as required. 2. Tighten anchor bolts after supported members have been positioned and plumbed. Do not remove wedges or shims, but if protruding, cut off flush with edge of base or bearing plate prior to packing with grout. 3. Pack grout solidly between bearing surfaces and plates so no voids remain. Finish exposed surfaces, protect installed materials and allow to cure. Grout shall be in place before any concrete is cast on the structure the base plate supports. E. No final bolting or welding shall be done until each portion of the structure has been properly aligned. Bolting shall be done with high strength friction type bolts and hardened washers, using properly calibrated and inspected torque tension wrenches. Install and tighten bolts according to RCSC's Specifications for Structural Joints using ASTM A325 or A 490 Bolts. Bolts shall be marked after tightening. Bolts shall be drawn-up tight and threads set so that nuts can not become loose. Holes for turned bolts to be inserted in the field shall be reamed in the field. Erection bolts are not to be used on exposed surfaces. Erection bolts or other surfaces and stiffeners shall not interfere with architectural clearances. Splice members only where indicated. F. Protect all adjacent finished surfaces during the progress of welding. Damaged surfaces shall be replaced at the cost of the erection contractor. G. After erection is completed, all field bolts, field welds, abrasion, etc., shall be cleaned and spot painted. Paint shall be same material used for the shop coat and shall be applied evenly with no runs, etc. H. Splices will be permitted only where indicated. I. Remove all temporary erection material (lifting hitches, column erection lugs, temporary gussets for bracing or guy cables, and related items). 3.2 CONNECTIONS: A. Connections shall comply with requirements specified in PART 2 PRODUCTS. B. Remove run-off tabs and grind surfaces smooth where the tabs interfere with fireproofing and architectural treatment. C. Do not use powder actuated fasteners for connection onto structural steel unless written permission is granted by the Architect.

7 CLEVELAND REGIONAL JETPORT PAINTING: A. Immediately after erection, spot stain field connections and abraded places with the same paint used for shop coat. B. Surfaces shall be clean and dry before painting. Apply no paint in freezing weather. C. All touch-up painting to be done by steel erector. See PAINTING for finish painting and additional requirements for steel finish and surface preparation. 3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL: A. Owner shall provide the services of a testing laboratory as approved and accepted by local authorities and Architect/Engineer to provide qualified inspectors for the following inspections: 1. All shop and field connections. 2. Qualifications of welders. 3. Daily calibration of impact wrenches used for high strength bolting. 4. Visual inspections of all work after erection. B. Costs of all inspections shall be paid for by the Contractor. Testing laboratory shall send three (3) reports of all inspections directly to the Engineer and Owner and elsewhere as directed. C. Field errors shall not be corrected by burning, except with the permission of the Engineer. D. Bolted connections shall be tested for minimum fastener tension for bolt size and grade specified in conformance with the AISC. END OF SECTION
