20 Evidence-Based Design Evidence-Based Design is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research and owner experience to achieve the best possible outcomes. This design approach enhances places for learning, working, healing and living. The evidence suggests that Powerbond has provided more meaningful enhancements to help improve the human condition than any other flooring product. Powerbond set the standard for sustainable flooring with award winning installations enduring for more than 40 years without need of replacement and 100% closed-loop recyclable. Powerbond is the only flooring to receive Georgia and California state congressional recognition for its environmental attributes. Powerbond s innovative closed-cell cushion has proven to reduce energy costs in IECC U.S. climate zones 4, 5, 6 & 7 due to its thermal attributes. Powerbond is the first textile floor to provide an impermeable barrier to moisture and contaminants and remains the standard for impermeable floors. Research confirms that its hybrid construction helps to improve Indoor Air Quality as compared to other resilient floors like VCT and broadloom carpets. 21 Moisture protection above and below Moisture-related flooring problems cause millions of dollars in repair and replacement costs annually. When a moisture problem is discovered, projects turn to chaos, installation schedules are delayed and budgets are destroyed. Powerbond cushion is the only hybrid resilient floor warranted for installations with moisture vapor emission rates (MVER) up to 10 lbs and a relative maximum humidity of 90%. The Construction Specification Institute and most flooring trade groups recommend the moisture vapor evaporation rate (MVER) not to exceed 3 lbs per 1000 sq ft. Powerbond s closed cell cushion technology also insures that once installed, no moisture or contaminants will find their way to the subfloor and the potential for microbial growth and other moisture related concerns. Carpet tile and other floors cannot protect the building from moisture and contaminant intrusion at the seams. Tandus Flooring is the only company that utilizes all three industry test methods to insure that occupants are protected from potential moisture management issues. Powerbond passes the Impact Moisture Test. After 10,000 impacts, no moisture intrusion occurs. Powerbond passes the Impact Moisture Test at its seams. 22 Improved Indoor Air Quality The average person spends about 90% of their time indoors. Powerbond can help improve and maintain indoor air quality in a number of ways. Contaminant intrusion is not dependent upon the flooring type. But the flooring type can determine the level of exposure to the occupants. Powerbond compares favorably to VCT. The graph below demonstrates the high levels of exposure to occupants of airborne particulate during routine burnishing of hard surface VCT. These concentration levels may pose a health concern to maintenance staff and occupants. Powerbond only requires relatively simple and inexpensive maintenance procedures (frequent vacuuming and scheduled low moisture extraction) that minimize the use of cleaning chemicals and respirable exposure. VCT also requires the use of chemicals (urethane-based wax and stripping agents) which results in high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The nylon wear layer of Powerbond is permanent and requires no finishes. The Powerbond wear layer acts as a filter to trap particulates until they can be removed by vacuuming. Hard surface floorcoverings, by comparison, show higher airborne particulate concentrations as they are stirred up by walking traffic, air circulation (heating and air conditioning) and maintenance such as sweeping. The University of Tulsa concluded that Powerbond reduces occupant exposure to airborne particulate by as much as 2 to 5 times when compared to flow through broadloom carpet in schools. Finally, always ask if the floor product contains antimicrobials. Once thought to be a benefit to consumers, antimicrobials are EPA tested pesticides. Like all Tandus Flooring products, Powerbond does not contain added pesticides. 23 Acoustics Just as with ergonomic factors, such as temperature, light and humidity, there is a comfort zone for the volume of sound. (Good office acoustics increase privacy, concentration, productivity Houston Business Journal, 2004) 26% productivity improvement with noise control (Building Owner and Managers Association and the University of Maryland) 70% of respondents said that they would be more productive if their office was quieter (American Society of Interior Designers) Powerbond s closed cell cushion helps to reduce intrusive noise by reducing the impact of footfalls and other objects on the floor. More importantly, Powerbond s closed-cell cushion reduces noise from other sources by its acoustical properties known as Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC). Just like acoustical ceilings and wall panels, the closed cell cushion of Powerbond absorbs sounds to reduce its overall impact on occupants. Powerbond has an NRC of.20, nearly twice the acoustical performance of conventional carpet tile without cushion and almost ten times better acoustical performance to VCT. 24 Acoustics Healthcare Since 1960, daytime sound levels have risen from 57 decibels to 72; nighttime has jumped from 42 decibels to 60. All exceed the World Health Organization s 1995 hospital noise guidelines of 35 decibels. The measurements vary little among different types of hospitals, indicating the problem is pervasive. (Rise in Hospital Noise Poses Problems for Patients and Staff, Science Daily, 2005) Research has shown that noise and sleep interruption may cause a number of negative results in patients: Elevated blood pressure and stress levels Development of cardiovascular disease Longer healing process and hospital stays Lower patient satisfaction ratings Quieter environments have been shown to improve staff satisfaction and morale, a critical issue as trends indicate the growing shortage of nurses. Additional studies show the reduction of medical errors in environments with less noise and distractions. In premature newborns, loud or startling noises can result in: Increased heart and respiration rates Decreased oxygen saturation Lower weight gain and impaired sleep

25 Acoustics Education Research provides evidence that the built environment can have a significant effect on behavioral and learning outcomes. As many as one-third of all students are missing up to 33% of verbal communication in class (Acoustical School Construction News, March/ April 2002, Standards Begin to Reverberate, Mike Nixon) 75% of the school day involves listening activities. U.S. schools may lose as much as $2.5 billion annually in sick leave for teachers with vocal problems % of school-aged boys in the United States are prescribed the drug Ritalin. The U.S. consumes over 90% of 8.5 tons of Ritalin produced world-wide each year, leading some to believe that many have been misdiagnosed and actually have difficulty hearing in the classroom. (United Nations 2/96) POWERBOND An acoustical analysis of school classrooms conducted by consulting engineers in audio, acoustics and video demonstrate that Powerbond s closed cell cushion construction helps to reduce reverberation times and ambient noise levels in classrooms. The reported findings include: The Powerbond flooring reduced the reverberation times from 8% to 25% in an unoccupied classroom. It reduced the reverberation times from 15% to 20% in an occupied classroom. This reduction of reverberation times is significant. One important comparison is the activity and impact noise of chairs moving across the floors. There is an 8 to 13 db improvement when using the Powerbond flooring. Some of the chair legs in the Standard VCT floored classroom have felt pads. This is significant.

26 Thermal Insulation Thermal imaging has shown that the closed cell cushion construction of Powerbond VCTT offers significantly greater insulation properties and energy savings compared to most other floorcoverings, including broadloom carpet, carpet tile without cushion and VCT. This means more comfort as well as energy and cost savings for owners. Reducing energy usage also reduces C02 emissions. Thermal insulating properties are measured in R-Values (h2-f/btu). The higher the R-Value the greater the insulating properties. The chart below (left) indicates the superior thermal properties of Powerbond with closed cell cushion when compared to conventional carpet tile and VCT. Powerbond Cushion has nearly twice the insulating properties of carpet tile and over six times compared to VCT. The chart below (right), indicates the thermal temperature of floors with Powerbond, broadloom and VCT as compared to the ambient room temperature. Powerbond s unique thermal properties indicate that the floor temperature is within 1 degree of the ambient temperature of the room, while other floor types (broadloom and VCT) have no thermal value to help insulate occupants from the cold slab temperature, almost 10% colder. Energy consumption as demonstrated by building energy modeling shows a net reduction in operating costs in schools equipped with heating systems and schools with heating and air conditioning. 28 Safety Powerbond products, when properly installed comply with ADA guidelines, assisting with patient and resident ambulation. Data shows there are approximately 1.8 million fall-related injuries annually that are severe enough for medical attention, while there are over 15,000 fall-related fatalities among people 65 years and older. Falls are the leading cause of accidental death and non-fatal injuries among older adults. Many people who fall, even those who are not injured, develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, leading to reduced mobility and physical fitness, actually increasing their risk of falling. Facilities must be more proactive in promoting safety as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid will no longer reimburse for care of patients who sustain injuries from falls or acquired infections while the patient is already being treated at a medical facility. The type of flooring surfaces can significantly impact the safety of a facility. To reduce slips and falls, surfaces with the appropriate Coefficient of Friction (COE) should be selected. 29 Ergonomics / Comfort Powerbond s closed cell cushion construction can contribute to better ergonomic conditions. Research conducted by the University of Pittsburgh examined the effects of floorcovering on leg muscle activity, fatigue and comfort while walking. Bioengineering testing was performed on a variety of carpet products with a variety of cushion characteristics. Researchers concluded that the soft-surface floorcoverings that combined a low, dense pile with a very firm cushion construction provided the lowest muscle response (less muscle fatigue) of all samples tested. The underfoot comfort provided by Powerbond can provide welcome relief to backs and joints. The hybrid resilient construction of Powerbond is a closed cell cushion membrane. Some equate the closed cell cushion to the performance of bubble wrap and suggest that the cellular structure will pop over extended periods of use. This could not be further from the truth. Powerbond is warranted to retain 90% of its resiliency over a 25 year period. Open cell membranes like urethane cushion will fatigue quickly and lose their resiliency and most are only warranted to keep 50% of their resiliency over 5 years. 30 Glare Healthcare Many hard surfaces used in healthcare facilities have a shiny, slick look that can cause glare and lead to disorientation, particularly with elderly patients. Floors may appear wet and slippery, creating artificial barriers or passive restraints that limit patients and residents from walking (exercise) and socialization. Alzheimer s and dementia patients may be especially affected. The soft surface of Powerbond eliminates reflective glare to create a more soothing view. Fig: HARD SURFACE GLARE

31 Roller Mobility It is important to use a holistic approach when making decisions regarding roller mobility. There are a number of issues that should be considered when selecting floorcoverings for healthcare applications. While hard surfaces may have an advantage in rollability compared to soft surfaces, other issues such as acoustics, safety, glare and ergonomics should be considered. The face of a soft surface should be low, dense and level and the cushion system should be as firm as possible. Powerbond condensed cushion was developed to enhance rollability while offering the benefits of soft surface. The use of large wheels on rolling equipment will also help to reduce the effort required to initiate and maintain movement.

36 Maintenance Powerbond has proven to perform in almost every flooring environment. Powerbond looks better for longer at less cost, making it the most cost-effective floorcovering solution. Regardless of the type of floor, gravity is a fact of life and floors are the single largest surface to catch dirt, debris and contaminants. Therefore, all floors get equally as dirty. What separates one floor from another is its ability to perform in various conditions and ultimately its ability to be cleaned. For instance, a floor in a corporate environment is exposed to less foot traffic and contaminants than say a floor in an airport. And while a carpet may meet our expectations in a corporate setting it certainly does not mean it will perform equally well in an airport; in fact, evidence would suggest the opposite. Fit for purpose floor selection is a critical decision any time high traffic and the requirement of high maintenance are concerned. Since not all products are made equally, then we should expect them to perform differently as well. Powerbond is constructed to meet the most demanding of conditions and retain its appearance with fewer chemicals than carpet or VCT, and require less maintenance man-hours of almost any floorcovering on the market. Even if neglected or abused over many years, Powerbond can be restored to near original condition. Many examples exist today where Powerbond has been restored to within 80% of its original condition after 20 years and longer, and at a fraction of the cost of replacement. This may be why schools, hospitals and government public spaces prefer Powerbond for its durability and ease of maintenance. 37 Installation / Maintenance / Repair Powerbond is the first textile floor system available with a peel & stick installation method. Since 1985, Powerbond has been available with a peel & stick installation method that is fast and efficient, allowing for immediate occupancy. The Tandus Flooring peel & stick installation method is called RS. Some would say Really Sticky, but in fact it stands for Revolutionary System. RS eliminates the need for wet adhesives and enables a clean installation without odors or excessive downtime while waiting for glues to dry. Equally important, since Powerbond can last decades, should it need to be repaired, you simply cut out the damaged area and replace with a new repair by a peel & stick method. 38 Installation / Maintenance / Repair With a densely constructed nylon wear layer that resists soiling and closed cell cushion construction that is impermeable to moisture, Powerbond is amazingly simple and cost-effective to maintain. Regular vacuuming along with spot cleaning as necessary and occasional wet extraction or low moisture extraction will preserve the appearance for decades. In a number of cases, Powerbond has successfully performed for more than 30 years in hospitals, schools and airports when properly maintained. The Powerbond technology is also available for entry systems called Abrasive Action. Abrasive Action in entry-ways can prevent 80-90% of outside soil from being tracked inside? This is one of the most cost effective ways to reduce maintenance costs and to extend the useful life of interior floorcoverings. Finally, Tandus Flooring has resolved the need for intrusive transition strips. Abrasive Action and Powerbond are easily welded together to provide a moisture proof barrier at the seam and yes no transition strip. Powerbond can also be seamed to other resilient floors at doorways eliminating those speed bumps when transitioning between Powerbond and hard surface floors.
