Learning Objectives At the end of this program, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the basic requirements of specifying architectural wood veneer panels. 2. Identify various impacts on the costs of architectural panels. 3. Explain the relationship between pre-specified wood veneers, standard veneers and specialty veneers used in architectural panels. 4. Identify the sustainable characteristics of fine veneer design and construction. 5. Outline the wide variety of panel cores that are potentially available and the restrictions on size and availability. Types of Veneer Cuts Flat Cut / Plain Sliced Quartered Rift Half Round Rotary Architectural Panels 6 Flat Cut Quarter Cut Cutting Line Architectural Panels 7 Architectural Panels 8
Typical Quarter Cut Pattern Straight line effect Oak species commonly have some degree of flake Medulary Rays Medulary Rays are the growth areas that t radiate from the center of some species, typically Oaks. These rays are what become flake Architectural Panels 9 Architectural Panels 10 Medulary Rays Quartered cut showing the effect of heavy flake. This appearance is the result of cutting parallel l to the medulary rays. Architectural Panels 11 True Quarters vrs Pulled Quarters Quarters are cut from the center of the log out. Flat Cut often yields veneer cut on each side of pith that is quartered. Half are true, half are bastard. Architectural Panels 12
Rift Cut Typical Rift Cut Pattern Straight grain with little or no flake. Generally only used in cutting Oak species. Cutting Line Architectural Panels 13 Architectural Panels 14 Half Round Rotary Cut Knife Architectural Panels 15 Architectural Panels 16
Tight Side - Loose Side As the knife hits the veneer, loose side and a tight side is created.. Loose and tight side are indicated by the way the veneer curls. Architectural Panels 17 Cell Polarization Book matched, alternating sections reverse the angle of the cells that appear on the face. Cells that pickup highlights on one veneer, cast a shadow in adjoining leaves. es Architectural Panels 18 Barber Pole Effect Matches Tight side loose side can create a barber pole effect May be eliminated by slip match. May be minimized by applying wash coat Book Slip Mismatch End Center Balance Dimension Running Architectural Panels 19 Architectural Panels 20
Book Match Most commonly used. Every other veneer turned over. Veneer joints match, creating symmetrical pattern. Slip Match Often used with quartered or rift cut veneers. Pieces of veneer are slipped out of stack. None are turned over. Produces repeating grain but joints do not match. Architectural Panels 21 Architectural Panels 22 Running Match Width and number of veneers is not a requirement. Can be sequenced. Outside veneers will vary significantly. Balance Match The width of each veneer leaf in a panel is the same. The outside veneers will be slightly narrower because of trim. May be even or odd number of veneers. Veneer widths will vary as flitch progresses. Architectural Panels 23 Architectural Panels 24
Center Match Center Match is balance match of even number of veneers. There is a joint at the center of the panel. Panel has a symmetrical appearance. Veneer widths will vary as flitch progresses. Special Matches Diamond Reverse Diamond Box Sunburst Book and Butt Borders may be added May be laser cut Architectural Panels 25 Architectural Panels 26 Veneers are matched end to end to create a longer length than available. End to end and side to side matching to cover large expanses. This process has limitations. End Match Architectural Panels 27 Grades Grades relate to American National Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood (HPVA) There are no AWI grades for veneer. AWI grades relate to completed products, including finishes. Their veneer specifications refer to HPVA grades. Architectural Panels 28
AWI Standards vrs Veneer Grade Grade: AWI Premium Grade, see Section 4 Sheet Products and Section 8 Wall Surfacing, Architectural Woodwork Standards 1 st Edition Species: Makore Cut: Quartered Figured Match Between Leaves: Book Match Within Face: Balance and Center Match Match Between Panels: Blueprint Match Finishing System: System 2 Precatalyzed Lacquer Sheen: 35 Sheen (satin) Architectural Panels 29 HPVA Grade Specifications Specific veneer grade descriptions outlined in the Architectural Woodwork Standards 1 st Edition are taken from the American National Standard for Hardwood and Decorativee Plywood (ANSI/HPVA HP ) Architectural Panels 30 AA A B Grades used in Paneling AWI Grades - Matching Premium Book Matched Balance Matched Sequenced, Numbered Sets Custom Book Matched Running Match Sequenced Pre-manufactured Sets Architectural Panels 31 Architectural Panels 32
AWI Grades Veneer & Core Veneer is cut from the best logs Premium AA Grade MDF or PB ¾ Thickness ( 11/16 core thickness) Custom A Grade MDF or PB ½ Thickness (7/16 core thickness) Less than 7% of logs cut are cut into veneer. Less than 2% of the 7% are AA Grade. Architectural Panels 33 Architectural Panels 34 Grades Are Subjective Split Heart Area of interpretation Cathedral effect must be achieved. AA A B Each half of the heart is subject to the minimum component width. C Architectural Panels 35 Architectural Panels 36
Split Heart Each piece of veneer makes up half the cathedral. Each piece of veneer must be at least 5 wide. Pattern must match. Manufactured Cathedral Appearance of a single cathedral. Architectural Panels 37 Architectural Panels 38 Pros Pre-specified Veneers Customer knows exactly what the veneer looks like; but not necessarily the panel. Veneers are selected that are appropriate for the application. Cons Pre-specified Veneers Veneer is usually more expensive than comparable veneers. Designers tend to specify areas that do not fit the log (height). One manufacturer can tie up the flitch. Yields may not be as expected. Quality may be less than expected. Architectural Panels 39 Architectural Panels 40
Flitch Samples Comparable to the pre-specified veneer in that the customer sees what veneer looks like. Insure customer is aware that flitch samples represent a specific amount of veneer; at a specific length. Understand d the difference between the appearance of a flitch sample and a panel, or sheet. Architectural Panels 41 Flitch Samples Do Not Show the color of sanded veneer. Show the progression of veneer widths within a flitch. Show the visual appearance of the match on the panel or sheet. Architectural Panels 42 Representative or Type Sample Represents a species and cut only. Does not represent any specific flitch or supply of veneer. May or may not be easily duplicated. Do not rely on these samples when specific appearances are required. There are several web sites where live veneer samples may be viewed. Grades do not always apply Less than 20 species are outlined in the HPVA Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood. Figure is not part of the grade. Consult with the vendor as to degree of figure or any other characteristic requested. Architectural Panels 43 Architectural Panels 44
Core Types Medium Density Fiberboard Fire Rated No Added Urea Formaldehyde Moisture Resistant FSC Cores are available in varying combinations of these enhancements There eeis nosuch thingas LEED coe core Architectural Panels 45 Core Types Particleboard Fire Rated No Added Urea Formaldehyde Moisture Resistant FSC Cores are available in varying combinations of these enhancements Architectural Panels 46 Core Types Standard Sizes Veneer Core Generally not available fire rated No Added Formaldehyde FSC Limited sizes and thicknesses Architectural Panels 47 4 x 8 4 x 10 4 x 12 5 x 8 5 x 10 5 x 12 All sizes are also available as cross grain panels. All panels are generally shipped 1 oversize. Cut to size panels are also shipped 1 oversize. Architectural Panels 48
Limited Combinations There are many possible combinations of enhancements, but the sizes and thicknesses that are available are generally limited Glue Lines Standard glue line is Type II Type I glue line is available upon request and by quotation. Many manufacturers use adhesive that is No Added Formaldehyde to bond veneer to core. Architectural Panels 49 Architectural Panels 50 Backer Grades Letter Grades are same as HPVA. 1 back is same veneer as face - may have mismatches and other cuts. 2 back is sound veneer, same species as face. 3 back is sound veneer, any species. 4 back is veneer or paper back. Factors that influence price Veneer Cost $$$$ Veneer Yield $$$ Core Cost $$ Core Yield $$$ Matching Requirements $ Special Requirements $ Architectural Panels 51 Architectural Panels 52
Veneer Cost The single most significant cost factor Some species vary by 200% Most manufacturers pick medium high to insure look Specified flitches almost always cost more. Veneer Yield Can be a significant cost factor. Matching short panels to long panels End matching different lengths Asking for consistent t component widths or equal component widths Anything that significantly affects yield Architectural Panels 53 Architectural Panels 54 Basic yields Example of veneer waste Running Book 36 panels 4 x sqft flitch Balance Book 24 panels 4 x 8 Center Balance 18 panels 4 x8 Architectural Panels 55 Architectural Panels 56
Example of Veneer Waste Waste and Loss of Match 5 In order to end match, veneers must start the same length Any that is cut off is waste Loss of match Architectural Panels 57 This arrangement results in both wasted veneer, andloss of match. Architectural Panels 58 Core Cost Fire Rated Core Fire Rated MDF Formaldehyde free core Formaldehyde d free fire rated core Odd sized or thickness cores Core Yield Drawings with poor yield Asking for slight increases in size that take panel out of standard sizes. 31 wide panels rather that long panels rather than wide rather than 24 Architectural Panels 59 Architectural Panels 60
Matching Requirements Long to short matches Different lengths end matching Equal component widths Specified component widths Chevrons, & herringbones Special Requirements FSC Certification Large orders that require all veneer from one flitch Fire treated backers Melamine or laminate balancing sheets Gluing cores together Architectural Panels 61 Architectural Panels 62 Communication Any information you can give your supplier is important. Drawings should be more than a scribble on the back of an envelope. Understand how your supplier is going to make an order that has both 4 x 8 panels and 5 x 8 panels. Communication Insure your customer knows what he wants. Insure you know what your customer wants. Insure your supplier knows what your customer wants. Architectural Panels 63 Architectural Panels 64

Important Points Understand what it is that you and your customer want to achieve. Understand how that translates into standards and specifications. Insure that you communicate your requirements to your vendor. Be aware of the subjective nature of some parts of the standards. Questions?
