7 About The Book Optimum Structural Cost The major goal of the this book, is finding the optimum cost design of frames as far as the materials as concrete, steel and framework are concerned using GAs method. Starting with the simplest parts of the frame as slabs, beams and columns with all its loading conditions, then designing plane frames and ending with the space frames under axial, flexural, shear and torsional loads. This is done by developing a computer programs (using MATLAB) with database to find the optimum sections in applicable dimensions, taking into consideration limiting the design results with the design constraints as much as possible. Checking the designed section capacities were carried out through a linear and non - linear reanalysis procedure to find out whether the optimum designed sections are capable of resisting the applied loads or not. Also, a parametric study was carried out through many examples to find out the factors affecting the optimum designed sections, such as concrete compressive strength, yield stress of steel and price ratio (steel price/concrete price). 7
8 Ph. D. Thesis Optimum Cost Design Of R. C. Frames Using Genetic Algorithms ABSTRACT This study presents the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) for the optimum cost design of reinforced concrete frames based on the standard specifications of the American Concrete Institute (ACI ). The produced single and multi objectives optimization procedure satisfies the strength, serviceability, ductility, durability, and other constraints related to good design and detailing practice. While most of the approaches reported in the literature have considered steel reinforcement only or cross-sectional dimensions of the frame members as design variables and for the flexural aspect in general, the dimensions and reinforcing steel in the present study were introduced as design variables, considering the axial, flexural, shear, and torsion effects on the members. The constant parameters specified prior to the solution of the optimization problem included the number of bays, the number of stories, the length of spans, the supporting conditions, the loads, the material properties, and the unit costs for the used materials. The forces, the moments, and any information needed in the Genetic Algorithm (GA) constraints were determined from the analysis. The optimum designed member sections were found as continuous variables. Then they were converted to a discrete form by giving nearest measurement of 25 mm as for the dimensions variables, while the areas of the longitudinal and transverse steel obtained from the design were converted into the nearest weight detailing of steel reinforcements that were available in the market. This conversion was achieved by generating a database of reinforcement templates containing different available reinforcement bar diameters in a pre-specified pattern satisfying the user-specified bar rules and other bar spacing requirements. The optimum design results were compared with those in the available literature. Depending on the explanation of the example problems and the presentation of results, the proposed optimum design model was gained to yield rational, reliable, 8
9 economic, and practical designs. The results of the (GAs) optimum design were so accurate and with zero constraints violation although no penalty function was used. A linear and non - linear analysis with eight nodes degenerated shell element were carried out to the optimized designed sections in order to check the adequacy and the capability of resisting the loads being applied. Also, a few different optimally designed examples were studied to check out the effect of some factors and materials properties on the optimum designed sections and their costs. It is worth considering that, the methodology of the solution with the (GAs) provides a robust optimum design approach for the challenging problems especially the required large constraints and the minimum time and effort for achieving the design requirements. This in turn, makes this method on the top of the available choices for any engineer seeking the optimum design. Through this study it was found that, the cost of the designed beam sections decreases by increasing the yield stress of the used steel, because of the use of less reinforcement ratio and also less dimensions for the cross section which is used when using a higher concrete compressive strength. Also, the optimum height of the cross section is increased by 35% ( if the reinforcement ratio is a fixed value ) by increasing the applied moment in one direction of the column cross section to 200% than the moment in the other direction, while the optimum reinforcement ratio is increased to 200% of its original value by keeping the same moment effect, and fixing the cross sectional dimensions of the column. So, its seems that when there is a need to increase the section resistance and find the better cost that resists a specified applied loads and moments, the concrete (as a material price) is more effective in columns optimum design than the reinforcing steel. 9
10 M. Sc. Thesis Higher Order Finite Strip Analysis Of Curved Box Girder Bridges With Intermediate Diaphragms ABSTRACT In the Last decades, the common use for the box sections in bridges especially in curved bridges, has been evident, because of their high torsional stiffness and the arising of small shear stress, as compared to other types of opened sections. Recent studies have involved the development of computer analysis and design for this type of structured. In this study, a computer program has been developed using a higher order finite strip method, with a strip having the following degrees of freedom: 1 Four degrees of freedom for each nodal line at the strip edge. 2 Seven degrees of freedom at the auxiliary nodal line at a distance equal to the half width of the strip. This means that, the resulting degrees of freedom of the overall strip will be 15. Therefore, the efficiency of the analysis will be much better, with a less number of strips. Also, this strip reduce the harmonic number used in the series function to represents the deflection along the span of the strip. The problem that, this strip has 15 degrees of freedom which will increase the time of analyzing the structure, a static condensation procedure has been used to eliminate the auxiliary nodal line degrees of freedom during the analysis, but they will be found later. Therefore, the effecting time of the analysis is the same as that taken if the ordinary finite strip is adopted. Also in this study, an attention has been given to the intermediate diaphragms and there capability of redistributing the stresses in the whole structure. But to ensure the equilibrium of the section, and to make the relative displacement at the junctions equals to zero, the plain finite strip method can not be used alone any more. The flexibility approach has been adopted to overcome such a problem, and to make the higher order finite strip capable of analyzing the curved box girder bridges with intermediate diaphragms, by assuming that the diaphragm is connected to the box section at a restrained points undergoing 3 reactions ( horizontal, vertical and rotational ) at each point. By the use of the flexibility approach, computing the values of these reactions will be obtained much easier. The same procedure has been used to represents the intermediate flexible bents. To make sure of the efficiency of this strip combined with the flexibility method, some examples have been chosen which were analyzed experimentally and theoretically by other powerful methods. A good agreement between the results are noticed, and this leads to conclude that: a good efficiency and accuracy of the results could be obtained by using this strip combined with the flexibility approach. 10
