1 Ref:NSDC/QA&Std/1.0/ CON/ Q 0301 Helper Carpenter Shuttering and Scaffolding CURRICULUM/SYLLABUS This program is aimed at training candidates for the job of a Helper Carpenter Shuttering and scaffolding, in the Construction Sector/Industry and aims at building the following key competencies amongst the learner 1. Introduction to the job role:- Describes the key rolls, responsibilities, activities to be performed by the person undergoing the training. 2. Health, Safety & Environment:- States about safety norms, practices to be followed and precautions to be taken to perform the job by a trainee. 3. Identification and Use of Basic Tools, Equipment, Material & Components:- Describes about common tools, equipments, materials and components which are used in shuttering work. 5. Sizing, cutting, drilling of plywood/ timber and making joints:- State about technique of identifying, sizing, cutting, drilling of plywood/ timber and making different types of joints. 6. Erect and dismantle different type of scaffolding. States about the selection of tools and equipment used for the said activity:- Also describes about the industry approved methods to carry out the same. 7. Cutting, Filling, Leveling & Compaction of Earth:- Describes about the tools & tackles used for the activity and the methodology to carry out the same. 4. Material Handling & Storing:- Describes about industry approved methods of handling and storing of materials related to shuttering activity. This course encompasses 7 out of 7 National Occupational Standards (NOS) of Helper Carpenter Shuttering and scaffolding Qualification Pack issued by Construction Skill Development Skill. S. Adhering and responding properly to instruction and reporting accurately to seniors in an organizational setup. Basics of arithmetic and drawing (line, sketch & label) enabling the trainee to make and Page 1

2 understand the same. Practise of developing a figure according to dimensions given in drawing. Basic communication and reading skill relevant to construction site including common terms, abbreviations, reading of notice boards, signs & signals and their respective usage. Knowledge of standard procedures of basic Health Safety & Environmental norms commonly followed in construction sites. Introduction about working safely to the environment and following practices of safe disposal of wastes, handling and storing of oils safely (Diesel, Shuttering oil). Right selection and use of necessary PPE s (Helmet, Harness, Safety Shoes, Ear plugs, Goggles, Face Musk, reflective jackets) as per requirement. 2 Health, Safety & Environment 40 hrs Questionnaires solving session on safety awareness and use of PPEs. Safe working procedures to work at height specially while against wind speed, working at CON/ N 0013 confined space, working at night. Introduction and practice of firefighting (Use of fire extinguisher, evacuation) by mock drill, fire drill etc. Introduction to safety precautions to be taken (related to operation of hand & power tools, ropes, slings, D-shackles.) while working with any lifting machine. Basic knowledge of fire drill, electrical safety, First-aid, inventory of a first-aid box and use of basic dressing materials. 3 Identification and Use of Basic Tools, Equipment, Material & Components 64 hrs Introduction to commonly used hand and measuring tools in formwork carpentry like hand saw, claw hammer, measuring tapes and their application. Introduction to different types of shuttering CON/N0014 Page 2

3 materials which are commonly used (Plywood, timber, planks, pvc boards, aluminum sections, system shuttering components, props etc). Safety precautions to be taken while handling/ dealing with potentially hazardous materials (saw dust, diesel, electrical equipments) relevant to shuttering activity. Industry recognized methods of loading/ unloading shuttering materials and its accessories (Clamps, shuttering oils, nails etc) as per their weight and type. Quality practices to be adopted related to 4 Material Handling & Storing (L/P) 48 hrs storing, stacking of materials used in job as per guideline of QA/QC dept. Method of shifting and stacking of scaffolding materials (pipes, ledger, verticals, platforms, planks, different types of jacks) according to industry recognized practices. 6 Erect and dismantle different type of scaffolding 44 hrs Use of different tools and tackles use in scaffolding work (Hammer, rope, clamp, pulley, water tube level, plumb bob) Method of checking a scaffolding/ staging using plumb bob, water tube level CON/ N 0017 Practice on technique of erecting and dismantling of scaffold up to a restricted height and safety practices to be followed (like proper barricading, dos and don'ts at construction sites, Right selection and use of ladder, Walkway etc.) (Preferably Mtr ). Knowledge and practice of proper housekeeping of scaffolding materials as per safety norms.
