1 DEPARTMENT OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING About the Department The department of Earthquake Engineering was established in The department is internationally recognized as a leading research centre in the field of Earthquake Engineering and is actively engaged in training, research, development and consultancy. The department offers masters and doctorate degrees and elective courses at undergraduate level. The department has played a key role in providing consultancy services to a large number of government and non-government organizations on major engineering projects involving earthquake resistant design of structures and equipment of various types. These include bridges, nuclear, thermal and hydro power projects, refinery and industrial complexes, dams, multi-storeyed buildings and many other special structures. The department provides major inputs in the formulation of Indian Standard codes of practice related to Earthquake Engineering. The department also houses the headquarters of the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (ISET). Department is currently engaged in several important studies such as non-linear analysis and Performance Based Design (PBD) of structures, seismic evaluation and retrofitting of structures, response control of structures using dampers and base isolators, non-linear soil structure interaction, assessment of liquefaction potential, seismic micro-zonation of mega cities, risk targeted seismic hazard assessment.

(Structural Dynamics): This PG program is aimed at complementing and augmenting the basic training imparted in UG Civil Engineering curriculum to design structures for dynamic loads. This course imparts in-depth knowledge of linear as well as non-linear behavior of structures. While the primary emphasis is on the design for earthquake effects, the training equips the students to handle any dynamic problem, such as, strong winds, machine induced vibrations etc. (Intake-18) M.Tech. (Soil Dynamics): This PG program focuses on all the important aspects of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering in addition to other areas of Soil Dynamics. The curriculum covers dynamic soil properties, ground response analysis, liquefaction of soils, seismic stability of slopes and retaining walls, earthquake resistant design of foundations, seismic ground improvement techniques and machine foundations. (Intake-10) M.Tech. (Seismic Vulnerability and Risk Assessment): This PG program has been started from the academic session This program aims to provide students with a robust appreciation of Earthquake Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk and cater to the needs of major industries, large engineering projects and utilities, infrastructure, urban population, economy and society at large. (Intake-10)
