1 SECTION SIGNAGE PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION A. This Section includes the following types of signs required for code compliance for the shell building (excludes user or tenant occupancy signage which will be specified in a separate FF&E specification). l. Panel signs. a. Plaques with fixed panel. B. Related Sections: The following sections contain requirements that relate to this section: l. Division 23 for labels, tags, and nameplates for mechanical equipment. 2. Division 26 for labels, tags, and nameplates for electrical equipment and illuminated exit signs. 1.2 REFERENCE STANDARDS A. The latest edition of publications listed below form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. The publications are referenced in the text by the basic designation only. Certified Forests and Products Listing. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of the Contract. 1. Signage schedule in manufacturer s format for verification of text/copy. 2. Technical data of sign materials, construction, mounting and imprint methods. 3. Description of methods available to Owner for obtaining future signs. 4. Color samples for each sign type. 8/31/

3 5. Time required for layout, manufacture and delivery. 6. Locations of several sign installations easily accessible by Owner or Architect. B. Before Manufacture: 1. Layout and artwork of each Sign Type, at least half-full size or larger. 2. Provide full size layout showing example of sign type that has a longer message than the average length. Example; Administrative Secretary - Sign Type A. 3. Schedule or layout of installation locations (height and offset). C. Before Substantial Completion: Kit of Owner's supplies for sign modifications, maintenance data and re-order information. 1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE PROTECTION A. Package to prevent damage or deterioration during shipment, handling, storage and installation. Products should remain in original packaging until removal is necessary. Store products in a dry, indoor location. 1.5 WARRANTY A. Furnish written warranty covering material, workmanship and installation against defects for a period of one year after substantial completion. Any defects shall be repaired and defective parts replaced without additional cost to the Owner, and to his satisfaction. Necessary repairs or replacements shall be made as defects appear. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Single-Source Responsibility: For each separate type of sign required, obtain signs from one source from a single manufacturer. B. Manufacturer specializing in producing the products specified in this section shall have a minimum of five years experience. C. Design Criteria: The drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements for signs. Equivalent signs by the listed manufacturers are 8/31/

4 acceptable. D. Signage shall be SFI certified and comply with requirements of the Sustainable Forest Initiative. Signage without SFI or equivalent green certification shall not be acceptable. E. It shall be the responsibility of the successful bidder to meet all local, state, and federal code requirements in fabricating and installing signs. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Basis of Design: 1. Fusion, as manufactured by Takeform Architectural Graphics, Medina, NY. B. Other Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering equivalent products that may be incorporated in the work include the following: l. Andco Industries Corp. 2. APCO Graphics, Inc. 3. Sign Systems, Inc. 4. Spanjer Brothers, Inc. 2.2 MATERIALS/PRODUCTS A. Signage system for interior use, consisting of plastic components. System shall be standard with the manufacturer. Alternate methods of achieving the same result will be considered, if proposed. B. Contractor shall comply with all applicable codes, including the Florida Building Code, Chapter 11, Part A. and the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG), and shall prepare alternate sign design and construction if necessary to meet codes. 2.3 SIGN STANDARDS A. It is the intent of these specifications to establish a sign standard for the Owner including, but not limited to, primary and secondary directories, wall-mounted primary room 8/31/

5 identifications, restrooms, stairs, and all code compliance signage. While the Owner may not obtain all signs and sign types, the signage contractor shall design and submit approval drawings for all. B. Typography: 1. Type style: Copy shall be a true, clean, accurate reproduction of typefaces specified. Upper and lower case or all caps as indicated in Sign Type drawings and Signage Schedule. Letter spacing to be normal and interline spacing shall be set by manufacturer. 2. Arrows, symbols and logo art: To be selected in style, sizes, colors and spacing from manufacturer s available products. 3. Grade II Braille utilizing perfectly round clear insertion beads. C. Colors and Finishes: 2.4 SIGNS 1. Typography: Helvetica upper and lower case. 2. Message Background: Selected from manufacturer s standard background styles. 3. Finishes are to meet current Federal ADA and any State requirements. A. Architectural Signage System: 1. The signage shall incorporate a decorative laminate face with applied graphics including all tactile requirements in adherence to ADA specifications. 2. All signs, including room ID s, directionals and directories, shall have a matching appearance and constructed utilizing the same manufacturing process to assure a consistent look throughout. B. Materials: 1. Sign face shall be inch (nominal) standard grade, high pressure surface laminate. A painted sign face is not acceptable. 2. The sign core shall be Green Core, a natural fiber wood product with SFI certification. The sign shall incorporate balanced construction 8/31/

6 with the core sandwiched between laminates to prevent warping. An acrylic core is not acceptable. Laminate on the sign face only is not acceptable. 3. Tactile lettering shall be precision machined, raised 1/32-inch, matte PETG and subsurface colored for scratch resistance. C. Standard Colors: 1. Face/background color shall be standard grade, high pressure laminate, all colors and finishes. 2. Standard tactile colors shall match manufacturer s ADA standard color selection. 3. Sign and backer edge shall be treated with a hot wax seal for moisture integrity. D. Construction: 1. The signage shall be capable of accepting paper or acetate inserts to allow changing and updating as required. Insert components shall have a inch thickness non-glare acrylic window and shall be inlayed flush to sign face for a smooth, seamless appearance. 2. The signage shall, with the exception of directories and directionals, be a uniform 8-1/2-inches width to facilitate inserts printed on standard width paper. 3. The signage contractor shall provide and install all signage inserts. 4. Manufacturer shall provide a template containing layout, font, color, artwork and trim lines to allow Owner to produce inserts on laser or ink jet printer. The template shall be in an Acrobat or Word format. 5. The signage shall include modules allowing for inserts, notice holders, and occupancy sliders. All modules shall be flush to sign face for a smooth, seamless appearance. 6. The laminates (front and back) shall be pressure laminated and precision machined together to a 90-degree angle. Edges shall be smooth, void of chips, burrs, sharp edges, marks and shall be treated with a hot wax seal for moisture integrity. 8/31/

7 7. The signage shall utilize an acrylic sphere for Grade II Braille inserted directly into a scratch resistant, high pressure laminate sign face. Braille dots are to be pressure fit in high tolerance drilled holes. 8. Braille dots shall be half hemispherical domed and protruding minimum inches. 9. The signage shall utilize an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesive. The adhesive shall be nonhazardous and shall allow for flexing and deflection of the adhered components due to changes in temperature and moisture without bond failure. 10. All signs shall be provided with appropriate mounting hardware. Hardware shall be finished and architectural in appearance and suitable for the mounting surface. 2.5 SIGN TYPES [It is the intent of this specification that the separate FF&E signage package will be compatible to this base exit door specification.] A. General: 1. Installation locations shall be in accordance with ADA specifications. 2. Locate sign units and accessories where indicated, using mounting methods for the type described and in compliance with the manufacturer's instructions. 3. Install signs level, plumb, and at the height indicated, with sign surfaces free from distortion or other defects in appearance. B. Wall Mounted Panel Signs: Attach panel signs to wall surfaces using the methods indicated below. Mountings shall permit removal without damage to wall surface. 1. Vinyl-Tape Mounting: Use double-sided foam tape, of thickness indicated, to mount signs to smooth, nonporous surfaces. Do not use this method for vinyl-covered or rough surfaces. 2. Silicone-Adhesive Mounting: Use liquid silicone adhesive recommended by the sign manufacturer to attach sign units to irregular, porous, or vinyl-covered surfaces. Use double-sided vinyl tape where recommended by the sign manufacturer to hold the sign in place until the adhesive has fully cured. 8/31/

9 3.2 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Clean soiled sign surfaces in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Protect units from damage until acceptance by the Owner. END KBJ ARCHITECTS INC 8/31/
