This reduction means less underground excavations, materials and vastly reduced installation time. As there are fewer runs required, the surface s strength is not compromised whilst maintenance and cleaning are also reduced. What s more, all but the largest sizes weigh less than 25 so reducing the need for mechanical handling. To further reduce hassle on-site, end-of-run caps and pipe connection sockets are supplied with other connection points moulded into the sides and/or bottom of each channel. The different sizes offered are designed to easily link up with each other in a step-fall design, so as the volume of water increases downstream the chance of overflow is eliminated. 3 GRATINGS MADE OF STURDY SPHEROID DUCTILE IRON The integrated gratings are made of high-quality spheroid ductile iron GGG-50. Different grating designs are available for different application areas. In roadways and pedestrian areas cross- or lengthwise webs are used. In industrial areas the open slot option with a particularly large intake-cross section can be used. The ductile iron GGG-50 is extremely sturdy and is designed for particularly high strain caused e.g. by heavy goods vehicles or airplanes. PE-PP CHANNEL RECYFIX HICAP channels are made of eco-friendly PE-PP recycled plastic. They are lightweight and easy to install. Almost non-breakable they are easily connected with oneway tongue and groove joints. Special connectors ensure the smooth transition between differently sized channels. Starting with a nominal width of 100 it offers the option to expand up to 680. With this the installation height increases as well and a channel is created underground which cannot be seen above ground. What s seen is a drain line with a consistently narrow cover A gully which can be installed at any location of the channel run is used to connect to the sewer system or as a connection to other branches of the drainage system. The gully can also be used as a access unit. Spheroid ductile iron GGG-50 combines the properties stability (slotted channels made of steel easily deform with the use of heavy pavements) and durability (galvanised steel can easily corrode in moist soils, losing the zinc protector, stainless steel is significantly more expensive). 21 THORNTON WASTE TECHNOLOGY PARK, LANCASHIRE, UK. Located on the western bank of the River Wyre, the Thornton Waste Technology Park developed by Global Renewables will be one of the UK s first operational UR-3R (Urban Resource - Reduction, Recovery and Recycling) process facilities that integrates waste sorting systems and proven anaerobic waste digestion technologies. This innovative development in waste recycling is scheduled to be operational in It is expected the facility will recover valuable resources, such as glass, metal, paper, plastic, land nutrients and energy in the form of usable gasses from up to 225,000 tonnes of waste generated every year by households in Blackpool, Fylde, Wyre and the surrounding areas. The riverside location has meant particular attention was paid to rainwater run-off and pipe depth issues in general. Influenced by the tidal river, the water table can be only 0.7 metres below the surface. Ground-works contractor, Churngold were keen to specify an integrated scheme that would offer effective drainage of the whole facility. Additionally, any drainage installed had to withstand the compression and twisting forces exerted by the numerous fully laden waste collection trucks accessing the site. In order to optimise the environmental benefits of the whole project, all aspects of its construction and operation had to taking into account the strict ecological requirements demanded for the facility. For this reason drainage components made from recycled materials were considered. RECYFIX HICAP high capacity slot drainage channels were supplied for the access and service areas around the site. The 775 metres of RECYFIX HICAP channels specified for the project are made from 100% recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP) derived from post consumer and post industrial sources. HICAP allows hydraulic engineers and contractors wide flexibility during the design and installation stages by reducing the number of channel runs normally required. This reduction means less foundation materials being used with fewer underground excavations, all resulting in a more environmentally friendly installation. Not only is no prime polymer used in the manufacture of RECYFIX channels but it is the shredded recycled material, not reformed pellets, that is fed directly into the injection moulding machines providing even more savings. Including their ductile inlet slot components, each RECYFIX HICAP unit delivered to the site weighed less than 25, so complied with current one-man-lift legislation. This not only reduced the need for heavy lifting hoists, but, compared with the concrete equivalent units, reduced the number of delivery lorries by approximately half. In addition, the recycled components are very impact resistant making them almost unbreakable and much less vulnerable to the usual on-site damage. Using modern reclamation techniques, components are also recyclable as their strength allows them to release relatively easily from their concrete foundations.
