Below Ground Tanking Systems Protecting buildings with robust, watertight sub-structure encapsulation

Below-ground tanking involves the application of a waterproofing system to the outside of a building s sub-structure to prevent water ingress. Tanking includes the lining of: Retaining walls Roof gardens Cellars Planter boxes Lift shafts Foundations Tunnels Basements Plaza decks The common aspect of all of these examples, (above or below-ground), is that they become covered with back-fill, concrete, screed/tiles, or growth media. Proven Record Viking Roofspec s self-adhered and torch-on membrane systems have successfully kept water out of New Zealand buildings for decades. World Class Manufacturers The manufacturers of these waterproofing materials are amongst the world s best in this field. Carlisle Construction Materials of the USA (the manufacturer of Viking Peel & Stick ) has been supplying waterproofing materials to the international construction sector since the 1960s. They only align themselves with distributors with similar values (like Viking Roofspec); two of those values being a relentless emphasis on training along with the mantra of sticking with accredited systems empirically tested in some of the world s most sophisticated laboratories. Established and innovative Italian supplier General Membrane (the manufacturer of Viking GM Mercury FC ), designs and manufactures world-class waterproofing membrane systems; proven to endure the toughest climates on the planet. General Membrane provides Viking Roofspec with exclusive membrane systems to cope with the South Pacific s most brutal conditions. With innovation at the forefront of its mind, General Membrane re-invests a lot of its earnings back into R&D. Approved Applicators To ensure a high standard of workmanship, only Viking Roofspec s Approved Applicators have access to its materials for installation. These standards are vitally important when it comes to below-ground waterproofing as it is imperative that workmanship is exemplary. W.M.A.I. Viking Roofspec is an active member of the W.M.A.I. ( Waterproofing Membrane Association Incorporated ); an incorporation of companies whose goal is to lift the standard of waterproofing in NZ. The W.M.A.I. has been commissioned by the Department of Building and Housing to formulate a Tanking Code of Practice for its Building Code. There are no second chances with waterproofing the sub-structure of a building once the back-filling is complete. Warranties of Substance The architectural market place deems below-ground waterproofing to be the sector it s most nervous about from risk and liability perspectives. Viking s below-ground waterproofing membranes come with a 20 year warranty against defects. A Viking 20 year warranty is backed by the Tiri Group a significant but more importantly, ethical New Zealand entity that stands behind its products. Peace of Mind Both of Viking s below-ground waterproofing systems are BRANZ appraised. BRANZ performs an independent assessment by reviewing and testing the quality of the complete system. This establishes a construction product s ability to handle the toughest of New Zealand conditions; meet the New Zealand Building Code requirements; and provide peace of mind to stakeholders; especially the building owner. One Building Envelope One Supplier Why not specify your tanking; decking; and roofing materials from the same professional materials supplier? Viking s world-class, proven materials; expert technical managers; and online resources; make this an easy and sensible decision to make.

Viking Peel and Stick Viking Peel & Stick is a self-adhering waterproofing system consisting of a 1.5mm thick rubberised asphalt membrane, on the face of which a heavy-duty, high impact polyethylene film is laminated. The adhesive side has a removable release sheet which is peeled back at the time of application to a pre-primed substrate and then fully bonded to it. Peel & Stick is BRANZ appraised, No. 826 (2014) Advantages Full-adhesion eliminates water migration Bond improves over time Adheres to various substrate types 20.4m long rolls - fewer seams Elastomeric properties - forgives movement and provides flexibility over cracks Cold-applied - no flame required; especially useful in restricted areas Age-old proven successful method System Components Peel & Stick membrane - 1.5mm x 0.914m x 20.4m Bituminous Primer - 19 litres Liquid Mastic Sealant 750ml Drainage board Viking GM Mercury FC Viking GM Mercury FC is a torch-on system that consists of polyester and fibreglass-modified bitumen membrane. It can be used for vertical and horizontal waterproofing applications such as floor slabs; behind masonry walls and on substrates of in-situ or pre-cast concrete. It is applied as a single-layer down to 3.5 metres, but when installed as a double-layer, can go down to 10m below the ground level. Viking GM Mercury FC is an S.B.S waterproofing membrane, rendering a cold flexibility quotient of down to -20 C degrees to prevent splitting or cracking in extreme conditions. Advantages Cold flexibility to -20 C Torch-applied - maximum adhesion 4mm thick - Very high puncture resistance Very high chemical resistance Resists hydrostatic pressure Rot proof Mechanically strong Age-old, proven successful method High puncture resistance Viking GM Mercury FC comprises of 4mm thick polyester and fibreglass modified bitumen membrane which is torch-applied to a compatibly primed surface. Being 4mm thick, it has high puncture resistance which is important for protection from damage during construction. Resists hydrostatic pressure When installing waterproofing membrane below the ground it will be exposed to hydrostatic pressure. Viking GM Mercury FC installed as a double layer is resistant to hydrostatic pressure, as deep as 10m below ground level, ensuring a watertight finish. System Components Viking GM Mercury FC membrane - 4mm x 1.0mm x 10m Bituminous Primer - 20 litres Bituminous gum Protection board Drainage board Bituminous fillets Viking GM Mercury FC is BRANZ appraised, No. 864 (2016)

Case Study: Viking General Membrane THE ARCHITECT HAD FAITH IN THE AGE-OLD, PROVEN METHOD OF TORCH- ON APPLICATION TO PROTECT THE SUB- STRUCTURE. TORCH-ON PROTECTS HOME ABOVE AND BELOW GROUND EAST AUCKLAND CHALLENGE: A NEW HOME WAS BEING BUILT IN AN EXCLUSIVE AUCKLAND SUBURB. THE HIGH-PROFILE ARCHITECT AND HOMEOWNERS DEMANDED THAT THE WATERPROOFING MATERIALS HAVE A HISTORY OF PROVEN PERFORMANCE. THE SUB-STRUCTURE S WATERPROOFING SYSTEM WAS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT, AS UPON COMPLETION IT WOULD BE COVERED BY BACK- FILL; SO THERE WAS ONLY ONE OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT RIGHT. A ROBUST TESTED- AND-TRUSTED SOLUTION WAS REQUIRED TO SATISFY ALL STAKEHOLDERS. Solution The architect and builders sought the expertise of Viking Roofspec and its approved applicator. The architect liked the credentials of Viking's General Membrane torch-on range. He chose to specify two systems from this range, one to protect the roof and one for the sub-structure; the latter of which would be encapsulated using Viking's GM Mercury FC tanking membrane system. Torch-on membrane systems have been protecting New Zealand buildings for decades. For the below-ground tanking, the architect had faith in the age-old, proven application method, and at 4mm thick, he felt reassured by the high puncture resistance offered by the membrane. This is vital as damage can occur after installation from for example, heavy earth moving machinery. Viking GM Mercury FC is more resistant to damage from these activities than the average tanking membrane, thus maximising the watertightness of the sub-structure. The fact that Mercury FC has a cold flexibility of down to -20 degrees Celsius and it is torch-applied for maximum bond, this meant the owners were more confident in the membrane's performance. Mercury FC is BRANZ appraised. This means it has been independently tested in New Zealand, by BRANZ, to ensure it can handle New Zealand's harsh conditions and that it complies with the New Zealand Building Code. Installation was completed by a Viking Approved Applicator who has been trained to waterproof the all-important sub-structure with the highest attention to detail to ensure a successful and reliable installation. The same Approved Applicator also installed the Viking torch-on system on the roof of the house. Having one applicator to carry out all waterproofing - above and below ground, provided a more coordinated programme on-site and more stream-lined administration for all stakeholders (including Council) who received just one folder from the applicator with the mandatory Producer Statements and Workmanship Warranties for all works carried out on site. Result The age-old and proven methodology of using torch-on membranes as a tanking solution was once again proven effective using Viking GM Mercury FC. The watertight sub-structure provided reassurance and instilled confidence in the homeowners who were also reassured that the membrane system had been backed by a substantial 20-year product warranty against defects.

Case Study: Peel & Stick THE SUB- STRUCTURE RECEIVED A DURABLE WATERPROOFING SOLUTION. WATERPROOFING THE SUB-STRUCTURE WELLINGTON CHALLENGE: A RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN WELLINGTON WAS BEING BUILT ON A SLOPING SITE. ONE INTERESTING FEATURE OF THIS PROPERTY WAS THAT TWO BEDROOMS AND THE GARAGE WOULD ACTUALLY BE BELOW GROUND-LEVEL, MEANING THE FLOOR SLAB AND THREE SIDES OF THE BUILDING NEEDED TO BE WATERPROOFED. AS THIS WOULD BE COVERED BY A DRIVEWAY AND GARDEN, THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR ERROR FROM A WATERPROOFING PERSPECTIVE. A FURTHER CHALLENGE WAS THE FACT THAT UNLIKE WATERPROOFING ON LARGE, OPEN AREAS SUCH AS ROOFS - TANKING THE WALLS BELOW THE GROUND HAD TO BE DONE IN A TIGHT, CONFINED SPACE. Solution As the work was to be done in a confined space, it was decided that Viking Peel & Stick would be the correct solution as it is easy to apply in tight locations (the 915mm x 20.4m rolls are easily handled on-site) and does not need a lot of equipment. Viking Peel & Stick is a self-adhering waterproofing system consisting of a 1.5mm thick rubberised asphalt membrane, on the face of which a heavy-duty, high-impact polyethylene film is laminated. The adhesive side has a removable release sheet which is peeled back at the time of application to the substrate. To begin, the floor slab was poured on Viking Peel & Stick membrane, then the block walls needed tanking. A critical component of this is tying the floor slab waterproofing to the tanking membrane (that runs up the block walls). The block work was primed with a roller-applied primer coat. The Peel & Stick membrane was then adhered onto it. Viking s standard details called for an extra layer of Peel & Stick membrane applied on the external corners for durability. The Viking Approved Applicator then protected the waterproofing sheet with a proprietary dimpled protection / drainage sheet. The membrane was terminated at the top of the block wall by fixing under the bottom plate. A drain was installed at the bottom of the wall to ensure any water drained away from the wall. Result The high-risk situation of waterproofing belowthe-ground was easily completed with Viking s BRANZ appraised tanking materials installed by its skilled approved applicator. The substructure of the building received a durable waterproofing solution through quality detailing and a proprietary protection system, resulting in a tanking job that would meet the New Zealand Building Code s Clause B2 requirement year durability.
