3 5.03 Posts Guide rail posts and terminal posts shall be according to manufacturer s specifications. Object marker posts shall be perforated steel U channel, 2.44 m long with 11 mm diameter holes spaced on 50 mm centres, minimum weight of 4.46 kg/m, and hot dip galvanized according to ASTM A 123/A 123M Guide Rail Cable Guide rail cable shall be 19 mm diameter, 3 by 7 construction steel wire rope according to AASHTO M 30 with a minimum breaking strength of kn, and Type I Class A zinc coating. Steel wire rope shall be factory pre-stretched percent to exhibit a minimum modulus of elasticity of 81,393 MPa. Coils and reels of the guide rail cable shall be identified by a firmly attached strong durable tag on which the following information is indelibly recorded: a) AASHTO / ASTM standard designation; b) Length; c) Nominal diameter of wire rope; d) Type of strand construction; e) Class of galvanized coating; f) Mass of rope; g) Modulus of elasticity; and h) Name or trademark of the manufacturer and location of origin Cable Hardware Threaded terminals, turnbuckles and anchor fittings shall meet the requirements of ASME B1 13M and have a minimum breaking strength of kn. Hardware shall be hot dip galvanized after fabrication according to ASTM A 123/A 123M or ASTM A 153, as applicable. Fittings shall be of the swage type. Swaged fittings may be shop or field swaged. Stud assemblies and cable ends shall be 25 mm in diameter. Turnbuckles shall be of the open body style Reflectors Retroreflective sheeting for adherence to galvanized steel posts shall be 3M 3910 Diamond Grade with a minimum reflective surface height of 12.5 cm x 23 cm. Sheeting colour shall be according to OTM Book 11. December 2016 Page 3 of 7 SSP 799S15

4 6.0 EQUIPMENT - Not Used 7.0 CONSTRUCTION 7.01 General High tension cable guide rail systems and terminal systems shall be installed as specified in the Contract Documents according to the manufacturer s instructions by installers trained by the manufacturer s direct representative. Damaged areas of hot dip galvanized coatings on any galvanized component shall be repaired according to ASTM A Terminal Systems Excavation for placement of terminal systems shall be as specified in the Contract Documents. Bedding and backfill for terminal systems shall be Granular A according to OPSS Bedding shall be placed uncompacted and shall match the gradient of the roadway for installation of the anchor assembly. Backfill shall be compacted according to OPSS Posts All guide rail and terminal posts shall be set to the alignment specified in the Contract Documents, regardless of the material encountered. Installation of posts shall be accomplished with methods and equipment that leave the posts free of distortion, burring, and any other damage Cable Mounting Height Cable mounting height for three cable guide rail systems for shoulder installations shall be measured at the traffic face of the system from the top of the final shoulder grade to the centre of each cable. Cable mounting height for three cable guide rail systems for slope installations shall be measured from the top of the final shoulder grade at the breakpoint in the rounding to the centre of each cable. Acceptable cable mounting height tolerances for cable guide rail systems and terminal systems shall be according to Contract Documents plus or minus 25 mm Turnbuckles Turnbuckles shall be installed on each cable at a maximum spacing of 305 m. For installations less than 305 m in length, one turnbuckle per cable shall be installed near the centre of the installation. All turnbuckles shall be positioned such that there is no interference with posts Cable Tension Guide rail cable shall be systematically tensioned according to the manufacturer s instructions, based on cable temperature, to the tension specified in the Contract Documents. For cable temperature values not specified in the Contract Documents, cable temperatures values and respective cable tension values shall be interpolated. December 2016 Page 4 of 7 SSP 799S15

5 Tension testing equipment specified by the manufacturer and calibrated for local conditions shall be used to measure the tension in the cables. The same model of tension testing equipment shall be used throughout the duration of the Contract. The tension in each cable shall be checked and the cable shall be retensioned if it does not meet the tension specified in the Contract Documents, at the following intervals: a) Following initial installation; b) Thirty to sixty days after initial installation; c) After any repairs; and d) Ten to twelve months after Substantial Performance. A completed Cable Tension Log Sheet, provided in Table 4, shall be completed and submitted to the Contract Administrator for each installation and after each tension check and retensioning Reflectors Retroreflective sheeting for reflectors on guide rail posts shall be installed between the top cable and the middle cable on the two sides of the posts perpendicular to traffic and on the traffic side of the posts at the following intervals: a) Starting at first post adjacent to the terminal system at the approach end; b) At a maximum interval of 20 m on tangent; c) At intervals less than 20 m on curves as specified in OTM Book 11, Table 4; and d) Ending at last post adjacent to the terminal system at the leaving end. Retroreflective sheeting for reflectors on terminal system posts shall be installed perpendicular to adjacent traffic on traffic side of post as specified in the Contract Documents. Retroreflective sheeting shall be securely adhered to the applicable posts according to sheeting manufacturer s recommendations Object Markers and Oversize Snow Plow Markers Object markers according to OTM Book 6, a Wz-2 oversize snow plow marker, and galvanized mounting hardware, shall be installed adjacent to each high tension cable guide rail terminal system as specified in the Contract Documents. The object marker and Wz-2 oversize snow plow marker shall be securely fastened to U channel object marker post according to the Contract Documents. December 2016 Page 5 of 7 SSP 799S15
