3 Non-regulatory Information NHBC Standards 2008 NHBC accepts the use of Fernco Flexible Couplings, when installed and used in accordance with this Certificate, in relation to NHBC Standards, Chapter 5, Sections Substructure and ground floors and Sub-section 5.3 Drainage below ground. General This Certificate relates to Fernco Flexible Couplings for use with sanitary pipework, underground drainage, sewers and rainwater pipes. Technical Specification 1 Description 1.1 Fernco flexible straight and adaptor couplings (see Figure 1) consist of moulded synthetic polymer sleeves and stainless steel clamps to ASTM A 240. Screws comply with ASTM A 493. Figure 1 Fernco Flexible Couplings for pipes with similar diameters for pipes with different diameters 1.2 The couplings are made from thermoplastic compound and their dimensional flexibility allows them to seal a range of pipe diameters. 1.3 The couplings and adaptors can be used on many pipe materials including plastic, cast iron, asbestos cement, clay, concrete, steel and fibreglass. 1.4 End clamps are provided as standard in corrosion resistant grade 300 stainless steel. The housings and bands are to ASTM A 240, Grade 301. The screws are to ASTM A 493, Grade 305. Clamps manufactured to European Grade are available upon request. 1.5 The couplings can be used for jointing two pipes of either similar or differing external diameters. They are available in a number of different sizes ranging from 38 mm to 248 mm nominal external diameter (see Tables 1 and 2 and Figures 3 and 4). Typical connections are shown in Figure 2. Figure 2 Typical connections Page 3 of 8

4 1.6 The stainless steel clamps are tightened by the adjustable screws to the recommended torque of 7 Nm. The maximum recommended torque is 8 Nm. 1.7 Continuous quality control carried out during manufacture includes hardness testing and visual and dimensional checks. 1.8 The couplings are suitable for jointing pipes of the following materials: cast iron to BS : 1990, BS EN 877 : 1999 grey or ductile iron to BS EN 877 : 1999 asbestos-cement to BS EN : 1997 polyvinyl chloride to BS 4660 : 2000 and BS EN : 1998 vitrified clay to BS EN 295, Parts 1 to 3 : 1991 and BS EN : 1995 ductile iron to BS EN 545 : 2006 ductile iron to BS EN 598 : 2007 fibre cement to BS EN : Table 1 Straight couplings Part No. Nominal diameters Width Suitable for pipe size range A B C SIDE A=B Figure 3 Straight couplings B C A Page 4 of 8

6 2 Delivery and site handling The couplings are supplied in different diameters. The couplings bear a mark showing the manufacturer s product code. Reasonable care in handling and storage is required to avoid damage. Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Fernco Flexible Couplings. Design Considerations 3 General 3.1 Fernco Flexible Couplings are suitable for use in drainage systems used in domestic, commercial and public buildings and installations designed in accordance with BS EN : 2000 and BS EN : 2000 for the conveyance, by combined or separate systems, of surface water or domestic sewage as is permitted to be discharged into public sewers by the Water Industry Act 1991, Chapter 56, the Sewerage (Scotland) Act 1968 and the Water and Sewerage Services (Northern Ireland) Order The couplings are suitable for use in drainage systems designed in accordance with the relevant parts of BS EN 752 : The couplings can be installed and the trench backfilled as drain laying proceeds. 4 Strength The product has adequate strength to resist loads associated with installation and subsequent use in the situations defined in this Certificate. 5 Performance of joints 5.1 The performance of joints will not be adversely affected by thermal expansion or contraction when correctly made. 5.2 Joints made using the couplings remain watertight under conditions of pipeline movement in excess of those expected to occur, in accordance with the relevant standards (see section 3.2). 6 Flow characteristics Joints made using the couplings have no significant effect on the flow characteristics associated with underground drainage systems. 7 Resistance to chemicals The material used in the couplings is suitable for use with the pipes and fittings listed in section 1.8 and has adequate resistance to the type and quantity of chemicals likely to be found in domestic sewage. 8 Resistance to elevated temperatures The product has adequate resistance to the temperatures likely to be found in domestic sewage. 9 Behaviour in relation to fire 9.1 In common with other plastics materials, Fernco Flexible Couplings are combustible and in a fire may ignite and burn. The adaptors are modular synthetic polymer and their burning will result in the release of toxic gases. Consideration should be given to the need for protective fire-resistant ducting when assessing the fire risk in a building, particularly where large quantities of couplings may otherwise be exposed. 9.2 In England and Wales the detailed requirements are given in Approved Document B. 9.3 In Scotland and Northern Ireland, pipes which penetrate separating or compartment walls or floors must be constructed or protected so that, in the event of fire, the fire resistance required for the wall or floor is maintained, and they must be fire-stopped. 10 Practicability of installation Installation of the product can be carried out easily under normal site conditions. 11 Maintenance A system using these couplings can be cleared without difficulty using standard rodding equipment. When installed in accordance with this Certificate, the coupling is protected by the pipe wall and is, therefore, unlikely to be damaged by cleaning devices such as toothed root cutters. Page 6 of 8

7 12 Durability When used within the conditions and recommendations given in this Certificate the couplings are expected to have a life expectancy equivalent to that of the pipework. Installation 13 General Fernco Flexible Couplings must be installed in accordance with the Certificate holder s installation instructions, general good practice for trenchwork and any specific site requirements. 14 Procedure 14.1 When inserting a junction or length of pipe into an existing pipeline, the pipe ends should be cut square. Any irregularities on the external surface, eg mould joint lines on the barrel of iron pipes, may require smoothing to achieve a watertight joint Before making the connection the coupling and the pipe ends must be clean To make a joint the coupling is positioned centrally over the pipe ends and the gap The fitting of the coupling is completed by the alternate tightening of the adjustable screws of the steel clamps to the recommended torque setting (see section 1.6) The Certificate holder recommends that before backfilling or concealing the joint it is tested to a maximum pressure of 0.5 bar. Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the technical investigations carried out on Fernco Flexible Couplings. 15 Tests Tests were carried out to determine: dimensional accuracy ease of jointing resistance of joints to hydrostatic pressure, shear or deformation withdrawal and deflection effect of accelerated ageing thermal cycling and box loading. 16 Investigations 16.1 A factory visit was carried out to assess the effectiveness of the quality control procedure An examination was made of data relating to: resistance to hydrostatic pressure, shear or deformation adequacy of specifications effect of pipe tolerances chemical resistance practicability of installation durability A user survey was carried out to evaluate performance in use.
