3 A Design guidelines The purpose of these design guidelines is to offer basic information about our handrail systems. The site-specific design is always the starting point, as this enables the conditions, connecting structures and applicable regulations to be taken into account. Basic handrail: The fundamental element of the handrail is the frame stanchion, to which other profiles are connected. In defining the stanchion intervals, the durability of the mounting bracket and flexion of the stanchions must be taken into account. The basic stanchion interval can be considered to be 1,000 mm on-centre. This allows the handrail to be connected to tiling of almost any thickness and balcony glazing to be connected to the handrail. To achieve the required strength, stainless steel rivets are used to connect the profiles. For example, connection of the glazing flange to the stanchion uses two 4.8 x 12 rivets per stanchion. We recommend an L-shaped toe board measuring 25 x 68 x 3 that is notched at the stanchions. A 9 mm plastic glazing wedge is installed to the bottom flange on both sides of the glazing. Thus, the height of the glazing equals the exterior distance between the top and bottom flanges minus 28 mm. With those measurements, the glass can be installed in the handrail by lifting it into the top flange and then lowering it into the bottom flange, on top of the glass wedges. The measurements enable the handrail panel to be installed after the handrail frame has been connected, and the glass can be changed one by one in the event of breakage. For standard thickness (7 10 mm) panels, both PX2 and PX5 sealants can be used on both sides of the panels. This helps to avoid unsightly bumps in the sealant when using max. 9 mm glazing wedges. The installation can proceed as follows: The stanchion intervals and length of the handrail element have been determined in connection with the design of the handrail. This provides the zero point for drilling the installation holes on site. Pre-drilling and anchor injections considerably speed up the installation of the elements. During installation, attention must be paid to the straightness of the handrail, both vertically and horizontally. This will ensure that the seams of the panels are straight and that separate wedging of the panels is not needed.
