GIS UTILITY MAPPING Akhilesh Pal, P.E. Public Works Department, City of Oskaloosa June 19, 2017

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) Objective: Prepare a comprehensive Geographic Information Systems for the City s wastewater collection and storm sewer infrastructure mapping. October 17, 2016: Council approved contract with HR Green October 2016 May 2017: HR Green collect and process data with staff assistance June 2017: HR Green completes data collection and delivers GIS database

WHY USE GIS? View information graphically. Store attribute information about features. (survey data, condition of pipes, manholes, etc.) Link features to scanned records. (Pictures, televised video data for sewer pipes) Combine database for water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities Upgrade grid system and ID s for assets to be consistent with water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure

WHY USE GIS BASED SYSTEM? Asset Management Rehabilitation/replacement decisions Meet service expectations and regulatory requirements. Financial planning.

LOOKING WITHOUT UTILITIES

BEFORE GIS No database management Paper records Dependent on staff/employee Time consuming and error prone
