1 National workshop on Innovation in Concrete Technology 10-12, December 2013 In memory of Prof. K. K. Banerjee Sponsored by Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP II) Organized By Department of Civil Engineering Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur Howrah , West Bengal, India

2 Objective of the Workshop Pre-cast and Pre-stressed concrete is one the most important structural material which can satisfy both speed and quality of construction. It has become one of the dominant ways to build the modern world. Its core strength lies in its ability to keep up with the changing expectations of global construction, from market challenges to new performance, and safety requirements. It is the ideal solution to building the best quality homes for different kinds of people taking into consideration during the design, manufacture, and build process. The flexibility of pre-cast concrete is increased with prestressing and high-strength concrete, allowing for long spans and great adaptability. It can be used all the way from foundations to bearing frames (skeleton), facades, walls, floors, beams, columns, stairs, balconies, and so on. Industrialized construction means cost efficiency, good quality, eco-friendly solutions, and great variety in architectural prospects. In other words, pre-cast is practical, beautiful, and safe. Through the industrialized process with its quality, performance, and effectiveness, prefabricated solutions save time, money, raw materials, energy, and nature. Using pre-cast products results in less waste being generated from construction sites. Engaged with several projects of corporate social responsibility, ecomanagement and eco-innovation, the pre-cast industry is at the forefront of sustainable construction. In India,. Prof. K. K. Banerjee was the pioneer in research of Pre-cast and Pre-stress concrete technology in India. He developed methods for pre-cast buildings and low cost housing. He constructed precast and pre-stressed experimental building known as Netaji Bhavan in the year Low cost houses were also built at different parts of West Bengal including Bengal Engineering and Science University. These buildings are more durable in comparison to conventional buildings. He showed us the right path of application of concrete technology. Due to lack of availability of equipments, precast technology was not commercially popular method of construction in India. At present pre-cast and pre-stress equipments are widely available as well as Pre-cast Concrete Technology has undergone massive advancement in recent years. Pre-cast building is really booming as the shortage of 28 million affordable apartment buildings can be met by pre-cast and pre-stressed buildings. Keeping in mind the social and cultural condition of India, suitable technology shall be explored to construct affordable homes. Thus Prof. K K Banerjee memorial National Workshop on Innovation in Concrete Technology from10-12,december,2013 is being organized by Department of Civil Engineering, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESUS), covering the following themes: State of the Art Pre-cast and Pre-stressed Concrete buildings in India Design of Pre-cast and Pre-stressed Concrete Buildings as per IS codes Design of Connections of Pre-cast/Pre-stressed structural Elements Computer Aided design of Pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete Buildings Erection of Pre-cast concrete structural elements Equipments for pre-cast construction This workshop from will bring together investigators, Professionals and concerned people on a common platform to disseminating knowledge and expertise on new methodologies and development in the designing and construction of pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete structures to keep pace with the growth of industry in Indian condition. Pre-cast Equipments Manufacturing companies and Pre-cast elements producing companies will also share their experiences.
