Program Summary: How can organizing a training facility like a home improve the student-athlete experience? Program Statement: From a planning perspective, the Tulane University Hertz Center anchors the street edge and places a dramatic entry in line with its context. The volumes are compactly arranged to increase energy efficiency yet still allow ample access to light and views; generous natural light streams into the gym space from a north clerestory while recessed openings or folds illuminate the corners; the massing even accommodates a future football stadium and gameday plaza. Among other criteria, a tight building envelope and efficient MEP systems allowed the building to achieve LEED Gold certification. A Building Area: (sf) 43,310 SF Cost per Square Foot: $212 Construction Cost $9,163,000 Date of Completion: 2012 Programmatically, the building is subdivided much like a house would be; with kid or student athlete spaces on the ground floor and parent or coaches spaces upstairs. Major elements include: a two-court gymnasium, training center, locker rooms, and team offices. Corridors provide key views into the gym and weight room, even opening up with large graphic walls for the locker room entries. On the second floor each of the three sports has a suite of offices with conference rooms overlooking the gym. The corridor doubles as a hall of fame where angled walls provide display space and trophies sit on suspended acrylic shelves securely behind glass. The programs share a film room with leather-bound stadium seating that cantilevers over the main entry.

A More than just the training facility, the Hertz Center was designed to be an emotional, intellectual and physical home that touches every aspect of the student-athletes lives during their time on campus. This sensitivity and flexibility allowed the building to develop a daily life-cycle determined by the people who use it what a concept.

A Conference rooms overlook the gymnasium providing a unique perspective for the coaching staff to observe practice.

A Hall of Fame An angled wall with hall-of-fame displays gives each of the three teams an identity..

A Film Room The sloped cantilever over the main entry is generated by the raked seating of the film room. This room features wood wall and ceiling panels with acoustic treatment, sliding/stacked whiteboard panels that can close off a projection screen, and a hinged triangular panel to close off daylight in the corner.

A Athlete Locker Rooms The athlete locker rooms provide a place where students can call their own.
