8 Committed to the environment Closed-loop recycling Epwin Group and its businesses across the UK are committed to controlling and minimising their environmental impact and to working in a sustainable manner. This includes the integration of economic, social and environmental factors in all elements of the business, from raw materials and manufacturing to installation and recycling. Epwin supports government and EU initiatives to improve the sustainability of building materials and encourages customers to take up end of life recycling opportunities to close the loop. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has given PVC-U a reference service life of 35 years. More impressively still, the British Standards Institute suggest that this extends to in excess of 40 years when manufactured to accredited standards. Given that research shows that each PVC-U product can be recycled over 10 times and still maintain performance, it can have a total life span of 350 years, making it one of the most sustainable materials available to the construction industry. Epwin has made a multi-million pound investment to create the UK's largest and most advanced PVC-U recycling plant, capable of processing both post-industrial and postconsumer PVC-U materials. We ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and follow a programme of continual improvement and innovation, by the operation of an environmental management system to the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001:2004. Epwin is committed to supporting and offering training to employees. We work closely with local communities across the UK, supporting all project stakeholders and ensuring we deliver positive outcomes for all. Epwin operates a major recycling programme across the British Isles focusing on the collection and processing of PVC-U waste, assisting the industry to comply with the latest legislation concerning the environment and recycling. This is helping the industry to not only meet legislation but to minimise its impact on the environment making a positive step forward to sustainable development. Through Dekura our network of dedicated waste collection and size reduction business that has sites across the UK, we are able to ensure the economic and efficient recycling of PVC-U. Combining this operation with our state of the art cleaning and reprocessing facilities in the Midlands we are able to recycle all the PVC-U material available today. The Epwin Group are constantly investing to create the UK s largest and most advanced PVC-U recycling plant, capable of processing both post-industrial and post-consumer PVC-U materials. Our equipment and our experience maximise the amount of material available for reuse and minimise the environmental impact of the process. After collection, cages are emptied, material is cleaned, colour and shape sorted, quality graded and finally processed into 8.0mm chip granulate, micronised powder or compounded pellets in various colours - white, brown or jazz depending on its eventual use. Thanks to innovations such as a five stage metal removal system and a rubber separation process, our material is the highest quality of its type available in the UK. Once re-processed the PVC-U materials are re-used into a wide range of long life building products within our own facilities - closing the loop on the recycling process. Using our skills and processing capability we have produced the UK s first window made from 100% post consumer waste

9 ENVIRONMENT RECYCLING LIFECYCLE Lifecycle savings Research has shown that the total capital and maintenance costs for a softwood window will be significantly more than for a PVC-U window. PVC-U makes an ideal low maintenance solution. This, combined with aesthetics and high security features, is why PVC-U accounts for some 90% of the replacement window market in the UK and why it is used either wholly or as a composite material in a range of building products. Epwin is committed to the environment and offering sustainable whole life costings for improved communities at every stage from production to site, through both its manufacturing processes and its products. PVC-U is a multi purpose material. Not only can it be manufactured safely but it is easy to recycle and is environmentally inert. Research studies have shown that PVC-U can be recycled up to ten times and materials such as glass and steel in the window unit can also be successfully recovered. The PVC-U industry as a whole has made a voluntary commitment to recycling. On a European level this involves a commitment to recycle 100% of collectable waste by 2010 (vinyl 2010). Our network of businesses and customers operate a recycling programme and any old products or production offcuts can be re-processed back into making windows and doors, cavity closers, rainwater goods plus anything else from underground pipes to electrical cable trunking
