A. PRODUCT NAME SPLIT FACE Architectural Block B. MANUFACTURER PERMACON GROUP INC Bombardier Street Anjou (Quebec) H1J 1A5 Telephone: (514) Fax: (514) Canadian Sales Offices Montreal: (514) Ottawa: (613) Quebec: (418) Sherbrooke: (819) Toronto: (905) Trois-Rivières: (819) C. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Split-face architectural concrete block, available in various sizes, models and colours, with sufficient compressive strength to permit its use in loadbearing walls. Component materials Concrete block composed of the following materials: Portland cement potable water sieve-graded sand aggregate sieve-graded crushed stone aggregate synthetic pigments based on metallic oxides In addition, PERMACON Group Inc. recommends (1) that the following water-repellent product be added to the mix; the designer should require its use in the specifications: water-repellent liquid polymer admixture (2), such as DRY-BLOCK, manufactured by W. R. Grace & Co. This product is designed to disperse evenly in the concrete mix so that it provides uniform permanent water repellence but does not obstruct the pores of the block; while the block is waterrepellent, it is not a vapour barrier. (1) Although the use of a water-repellent product in the mix can only enhance its performance, its use is not essential; the advantages of using it include, among others, better resistance to water penetration, better control of efflorescence and more rapid drying following rain. (2) Except for the grey-coloured concrete block.

Manufacture Manufactured by first moulding, then splitting. Curing Factory-produced concrete block cured at normal pressure or at high pressure (autoclaving for the grey block produced in Montreal). The humidity content (refer to the 4 th symbol, O, in the classification) at the time of delivery or installation is not important since SPLIT FACE architectural block will generally be installed on the exterior. However, since it will be subject to expansion and contraction resulting from variations in moisture and temperature, the designer must provide a sufficient quantity of appropriatelyplaced movement joints in the veneer to absorb this movement and to prevent the appearance of cracks in the mortar joints or even in the blocks themselves. These comments also apply to masonry loadbearing walls and interior partitions. Manufacturing tolerances Length: ± 3 mm Depth: ± 2 mm Height: ± 3 mm. Uses of SPLIT FACE architectural block SPLIT FACE architectural block may be used as the exterior cladding material for a cavity wall, as a loadbearing or non-loadbearing single wythe wall, or as a loadbearing or non-loadbearing interior partition. SPLIT FACE architectural block may be used in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings, in both large and small projects, and in both new construction and renovation work. Colors and dimensions Refer to the brochure entitled MASONRY PRICE LIST, issued annually by Permacon Group Inc., for the choice of colours and dimensions available.

Where necessary, Permacon Group Inc. invites the designer to consult its representative before making any decisions. D. TECHNICAL DATA 1995 National Building Code of Canada (NBC) In accordance with the fields of application defined in Section Application: Part 9, Section Above-Grade Masonry, for houses and small buildings not exceeding 3 storeys or 11 metres in height Part 4, Subsection 4.3.2, for all other buildings. Standards CSA A Concrete Masonry Elements Fabricated from Portland Cement, Water, Aggregates and, where required, Admixtures; deals only with concrete block. CSA A179-94, Mortar and Grout for Unit Masonry CSA A370-94, Connectors for Masonry CSA A371-94, Masonry Construction for Buildings CSA S , Masonry Design for Buildings (Limit States Design). Refer to NBC, Subsection Used for the design of masonry walls and partitions which are subject to axial or lateral loads. Environmental considerations Inert product, consumes only a limited quantity of energy during the manufacturing process, durable and recyclable.

Physical properties Table 2 Classification of the blocks in accordance with the 4 symbols used in CSA A165.1 Symbol Properties Requirements (CSA) Requirements (Permacon) first S or H (1) (S) solid unit (100 x 200 x 400) (H) hollow unit (150/200/250/300 x 200 x 400) second 20 minimum compressive strength (average compressive strength of three units, with calculations based on net area). 15 MPa 20 MPa third A minimum density 2000 kg/m_ 2150 kg/m_ maximum water absorption (water absorbed by the element) 8.75% (175 kg/m_) 6.00% (129 kg/m_) fourth maximum moisture content, % of total absorption O no limit no limit (1) The symbol S (for solid ) corresponds to a block with a net area which exceeds 75% of the gross area, whereas the symbol H (for hollow ) corresponds to a block with a net area of less than 75%.

Fire resistance SPLIT FACE architectural block must have a fire-resistance rating when it is used in a firewall or fire separation or when it forms part of a wall whose exterior surface area requires exposure protection from a fire originating in an adjacent building (refer to NBC, Subsection 3.2.3, "Spatial Separation and Exposure Protection"). Table 3 Fire resistance of SPLIT FACE architectural block as a function of its equivalent thickness Nominal dimensions (1) Fire-resistance rating (in hours) according to the National Building Code 100 x 200 x 400 mm > 1.0 hour 150 x 200 x 400 mm > 1.5 hours 200 x 200 x 400 mm > 2.0 hours 250 x 200 x 400 mm > 3.0 hours 300 x 200 x 400 mm > 3.0 hours (1) The nominal dimension corresponds to the actual dimension of a block + one standard 10 mm mortar joint. For example, a 100 x 200 x 400 mm block is equivalent to a block to whose actual dimensions are added the thickness of a mortar joint, or mm x mm x mm. Acoustical properties Acoustical properties are expressed by two different measurements: The first measurement is the SRC or sound reduction coefficient (the arithmetic average of coefficients obtained at several different frequencies), a measure of the rate of sound absorption by a concrete block with a regular or a special shape, which is made of light or heavy aggregate. The coefficient varies between 0.0 and 1.0; the higher the number, the more sound is absorbed by the material. The SRC of a heavy block with a medium texture is The second measurement is the STC or sound transmission class, obtained by measuring the sound levels of a partition or wall of which blocks are either the sole component or one of the components. It is measured in decibels as the reduction in sound, which results through a partition or wall (composed of one or more materials) which separates two spaces, one of which contains a sound emitter and the other, a sound receiver. The higher the total number of decibels, the greater the reduction in sound transmission.

Table 4 Sound transmission class (STC) Nominal dimensions Class measured in decibels 100 x 200 x 400 mm ± 48 (100% solid) 100 x 200 x 400 mm ± 45 (hollow core) 150 x 200 x 400 mm ± x 200 x 400 mm ± x 200 x 400 mm ± x 200 x 400 mm ± 54 E. TRANSPORT & STORAGE Packaging and transportation The blocks are stacked in rows on returnable wood pallets. To protect the blocks from the weather, each cube is wrapped with a stretched plastic cover. Site storage Until the blocks are about to be installed, they should remain in place on the pallets on which they were delivered or on wood supports. They should be kept at least 75 mm above the ground so that they do not come into contact with humidity or contaminants in the ground. Take the necessary precautions to protect the blocks from staining or damage while they are being stored. Place a polyethylene sheet or other plastic cover between the wood support and the masonry elements when these must be stored for a long time. Cover blocks that must be stored outdoors. Do not use salt to melt ice which may have formed on the masonry elements. F. INSTALLATION Preparatory work Support base and back-up wall Ensure that the plans and specifications include the following requirements (coordinate all of this with the designer): ensure that the support base and the back-up walls for the masonry cladding are solid, plumb and level provide vertical and horizontal movement joints in the veneer to compensate for movement of its elements resulting from thermal, moisture-related or structural causes

ensure that the back-up walls (whether in masonry, steel or wood studs) to which the connectors (ties, anchors or fasteners) are fastened is sufficiently rigid (rigidity, steel gauge) to limit the deflection caused by the lateral loads (wind, seismic and others) to span/720. Assignment of responsibilities Before commencing the installation of the veneer, clearly establish the responsibilities of the mason (supply and/or installation) with regard to the installation of the various components of the back-up wall, the scaffolding, the loose lintels and the flashings, the products which may be used to compartmentalize the air space, the thermal insulation and the attachment of the ties to the backup wall. Installation The following materials and products are typically used in the installation of SPLIT FACE architectural block: Mortar, anchors and accessories Type N mortar or type S mortar (for loadbearing masonry), in accordance with CSA A179-94, Mortar and Grout for Unit Masonry Connectors (anchors, ties and fasteners) which permit vertical adjustment, in galvanized steel (variable weight) or in stainless steel, in accordance with CSA A370-94, Connectors for Masonry Accessories consisting of weepholes and vents, joint backer and joint sealer for movement joints, membrane and metal flashings, materials used for the compartmentalization of the air space, loose steel lintels.
