TAKE HOME BAZ: DARREN & ANDREA PHILLIPS Baz heads to Bunnings Warehouse in Browns Plains QLD, where he s on the hunt for rookie DIY ers in need of a helping hand. There, he bumps into the Phillips family, who are keen for expert know-how on some common household jobs they ve been putting off for ages. Baz discovers that Darren has many unfinished projects around the house, and quickly puts him to work. Will Darren and Andrea successfully complete their tasks, or will they have to use their lifelines to dial up Dylan or bring back Baz?

PAVING REPAIR Before What you ll need: Course sand Fine sand Level After Rubber mallet. Pre-mix mortar Water Trowel

Step 1: Remove all broken/uneven pavers from the area, and scrape out any rough ground below. Step 2: Pour your course sand into the area to be re-paved. This layer should only be 20-25mm thick. Use your level to screed the sand to create an even bed for your pavers. Tip: Lay two pavers at opposite ends of the area that needs fixing. When these pavers are level with the existing pavers, this will give you a guide for the correct level to screed the sand. Step 3: Lay your pavers one at a time. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place. Step 4: Mix up some pre-mix mortar for the haunching. (Don t do this too early, as the mixture will set) Step 5: Dig a small trench approximately halfway underneath the edge of your paving and fill it with the mortar mix. This will create a barrier for the sand bed that will help keep your edging pavers in place. Step 6: Lay down an edge of mortar at a 45-degree angle to the finishing pavers. Step 7: To finish the job, pour fine sand over the paving and use a broom to brush it down between the pavers.

RE-HANGING A GATE Before After What you ll need: Old wood/bricks etc. to use as packing. Self-drilling screws. Drill Drill bits (various sizes depending on your job) Cutting oil

Step 1: Position the gate parallel to the ground and level with the fence post. Use packing blocks or scrap timber to raise the height of the gate. Remember to keep in mind that the ground may not be level, and you will need to allow for any incline when the gate swings open. Step 2: Once you think you have the gate positioned at the right height, attach it to the fence post. Tip: Use self-drilling screws to save time on drilling pilot holes. Tip: If you are drilling through metal, drill a pilot hole prior to inserting your screw even if you are using self-drilling screws. This will act as a guide hole for the screw and help prevent breakages. Tip: Using cutting oil on your drill bit will help prevent friction and the metal heating up. Step 3: Once your gate is level, attach the latch to finish the job.

BRICK WORK REPAIR Before After What you ll need: Mortar (We used pre-mixed) Bucket of water Flat surface to mix your mortar on. (We used a scrap of plywood) Trowel Sponge / Brush for cleaning Plasticizer / Dishwashing concentrate Level

Step 1: If you are using wood to mix your mortar on, it s best to wet it down to seal the surface. It will stop it from absorbing the water straight out of your mortar mix. Step 2: Pour a generous amount of mortar onto the plywood, and make a well in the centre. Pour some water into the centre of the well. Mix the mortar with the water using a trowel. Keep turning the mix over until it s nice and smooth. Your mortar mix is ready when you can hold your trowel upside down, and the mixture sticks. Tip: Instead of using plasticizer, you can mix a small drop of dishwashing concentrate into your water before mixing it with the mortar. This will make your mortar mix smoother and more workable. Step 3: To start laying bricks, you must first lay down a base of mortar as a foundation for your first layer. Use the trowel to create a V-shaped valley in the middle of the mortar base. Step 4: Work the first brick into the mortar base, until it is approximately 12mil thick. Step 5: Butter the edge of your next brick that will make contact with the first brick laid, seal the edges using your trowel and lay it in place. Use the handle of your trowel and a spirit level, and tap the brick into position so it sits level with the starting brick. Scrape off any excess mortar. For each new layer of bricks, ensure that you position each brick directly over the join in the previous layer. Continue this process until you have completed your brickwork, remembering to use your level to make sure your bricklaying is level at all times. Step 6: Once your brickwork is finished, use a sponge to wipe off any excess mortar.
