Introduction K-Lok User Guide The Stair Tower is made from pre-fabricated components and built using standards, ledger beams, stair flights, landings, handrails and guardrails. The stair tower can be built as an independent construction or integrated into other scaffolding or staging. All components are made of galvanised steel and conform to the structural requirements of BSEN nd BSEN with regards to the component testing and calculation requirements. All components have our identification marks with month and year of manufacture. 3

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions Base Jacks The Base Jacks are adjustable in height to ensure the tower is both level and stable on uneven ground. Note: Always use minimum adjustment height to achieve final platform height. Standards Standards are 1m, 2m and 3m in length and are used according to the height of tower being built. Beams The stair tower is built using 1.6m and 3.0m ledger beams with 2.0m, 1.5m and 1.0m between the platform levels. Anchorage The stair tower must be anchored to a structure at each platform level on both sides of the inner and outer standards using scaffold tube and couplers. Loads on Flights and Landings Stair flights and landings have a safe working load of 1.5kN/sq.m Loads on Standards The stair tower when using 2.0m platform heights has a permissible loading of 20 kn per standard. Handrails All stair flights and landings are equipped with a minimum of double handrails. An additional 3.0m single handrail is added to the external area on a 2.0m stair flight. Construction Heights The maximum construction height for a stair tower with platform levels and stair flights every two metres is 30.0m. The stair flights must have handrails on the inside of every stair flight. The landings must have guardrails at 1.0m and 0.5m heights. IMPORTANT NOTICE For stair tower constructions not covered by this erection guide please contact the technical sales team at the address on the reverse of this guide. 4

Tower Assembly Instructions 1. Start by setting out the sole pads and the base plates and position the standards, ledger beams and transom beams. Place base jacks onto sole pads and then adjust to approximately final height. 2. Place standards on to base jacks, making sure the pockets face in the right direction. 3. Connect 3 metre ledger beam to the higher level pockets. Connect the 1.6m ledger beams to lower level pockets. 9

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions 4. Engage all locking catches as you proceed. 5. Using a tape measure, check distance from structure 6. Level first lift by adjusting base jacks as necessary. Do this in a clockwise direction. 10

Tower Assembly Instructions 7. Check base lift is square using a tape measure 8. Place first landing (A) on ledger beams. Then place the erecting platform (B) at the opposite end of the bay. Now both erectors should install the second level of ledger beams. At this point check the drawings for 1m, 1.5m or 2m lift heights. 9. Now install the second landing - initially about half a metre from the end of the bay. 11

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions 10. Fit the entrance step to the stair tower. 11. The tower must be anchored to the structure on each platform level using scaffold tube and couplers connected to both the inner and outer standards. 12. The stair flight is installed by first positioning vertically and locating the base into the pockets on the lower landing... 12

Tower Assembly Instructions 13. The flight is then lowered onto the landing above 14. The landing is then pushed along until the top of the stair flight is fully located into the pockets of the upper landing. 13

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions 16. Fit Guardrail Frames andguardrails to the outside face of the stair flight. 17. The lead erector clips on to mid point of ledger beam. Both erectors fit stair handrail post into top and lower landings. Then, stair handrail is located into the handrail post and locking catches engaged. Use pigtail to ensure post can not move. 18. Fit folding guard frame into handrail post and standard at entrance to stair. 14

Tower Assembly Instructions 19. Re-position erecting platform onto next lift directly above lower landing. 20. Erector 1 climbs stair flight and fits temporary clip-on post to ledger beam close to erecting platform. He then hooks onto ledger beam and, using clip-on post for support, climbs onto erecting platform. NB: Post only used to aid climbing onto exposed landing 21. Second erector now climbs stair flight to landing, hooks onto ledger beam close to standard. Standards are now added to all four legs. (You can now move the clip-on post to a safe place until it is needed again) 15

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions 22. Fit guardrail frames to face and end of tower. Fit ledger beams to next lift required (at 1m, 1.5 or 2m). Re-hook to upper ledger, close to standards 23. At this point, make sure you tie in before erecting next lift. 24. For further Iifts repeat procedures 8, 9 and until you reach final exit or a mid exit point. 16

Tower Assembly Instructions 25. Entrance/exit at top of tower. Erector 1 is safely standing on landing and hooked onto centre of 1.6m ledger beam. He fits 3m guardrail frame with erector 2 safely standing on erecting platform at opposite end of tower, hooked onto 1.6m ledger beam. Erector 1 then fits top guard frame into handrail post and landing as above. 26. SIDE EXIT Erector 1 is safely standing on landing and fits clip-on post to inside ledger beam. Erector 2 standing on erecting platform at opposite end of tower hooked onto 1.6m ledger beam. Both operators then fit 2.16m guard rails into clip-on post and standard, ensuring locking catches are engaged. The exit is then complete. 27. END EXIT Erector 1 is safely standinq on landing. Erector 2 is standing on erecting platform at opposite end of tower clipped onto 1.6m ledger beam. Both operators then fit 3m guardrail frame at each side of tower. Remove 1.6m guard from landing position. The exit is then complete. 17

Tower Assembly Instructions Access Tower User Guide Addendum Notes Tower must be erected on a stable base which will prevent excessive settlement. Spreader plates should be used as necessary. The foundations should be adequate to carry and disperse the load imposed both locally at each standard and, in general, to carry the whole weight of the stair tower. The responsibility for the adequacy of the foundations should be established and approved prior to erection. The client for the stair tower and / or the contractor may need to be consulted. The foundation for a stair tower should be maintained in an adequate condition during the life of the tower. Regular inspection procedures must be provided and use suspended if there is found to be any loss of support. Tower must be erected against a sound and inherently stable existing structure, upon which it relies for stability. All towers will impose forces upon the structure they are fixed to through their ties. An assessment should be initially made regarding the ability of the structure to sustain the loads either globally, due to its own instability, or locally as a result of defective finishes. Loadings from the ties into the supporting structure are dependant upon the live loading to the stair tower, its height and in the majority of cases the wind loading imposed upon the tower and its cladding status. For guidance with regards to the design of ties into building facades we would refer you to Section 5 of TG20:08 or to the George Roberts (NW) Ltd Technical Services Department or a competent temporary works designer In accordance with the requirements of BS EN12811 the Design load is 1 kn/ m2, or 1.5 kn positioned in worst case position for element of tower under inspection. Tower should be tied to existing structure at each lift (i.e. 2m vertical centres) using horizontal ties at each side that securely fix to the existing structure and to the inner and outer standard. Additional components outside the systems standard component set may be required to enable use in accordance with this User Guide. These will normally constitute loose tubes to EN39 and fittings to EN74. Where tower has the short face parallel to the existing structure, additional ties should be provided at each lift from the outer standards at 45 degrees back to the existing structure. These additional ties are to be securely fixed to the existing structure and the fixing is assumed to be capable of resisting horizontal forces both parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the wall. The tower is assumed to be unclad and free from netting and sheeting, such that the only area presented to the wind is that of the components of the tower. The personnel capacity table is limited to a maximum area load of 3 kn/m2 for practical reasons. For the personnel capacity table, one person is assumed to weigh 100 Kg, exerting a force of approximately 1 kn. Throughout the calculations the maximum design load on any standard has been taken as 35.6 kn where the 3m face is parallel to the structure and 41.6 kn where the short face is parallel to the structure. 19

K-Lok User Tower Guide Assembly Instructions Access Tower User Guide Addendum Notes Where structure is not available at the lift heights then a scaffold bracing system should be used to provide a tie to the lift back to a position of effective restraint or the George Roberts (North West) Ltd Technical Services Department contacted for advice. Safe Working Height Tables Notes Tables are based on a maximum height of 30m, heights above this are possible but these should be referred to George Roberts (NW) Ltd Technical Services Department or a competent temporary works engineer. The User Guide utilises wind loading in the preparation of its safe working height tables for the stair towers. These tables are limited to S values above 20 and below 40. Where localised conditions result in S values outside of these parameters the wind velocity pressures may either be lower than or exceed those utilised within the calculations from which the tables are derived. Stair towers located on sites at the edges of cliffs or escarpments, in coastal locations or to tall structures surrounded by other tall structures which may cause funnelling of the wind pressure are all susceptible to significant increases in wind pressure due to local effects. In these instances it is recommended that advice is sought from the George Roberts (NW) Ltd Technical Service Department or a competent temporary works engineer. If the site is; at least 2Km inside a town terrain, is shielded by buildings within 100m and the average height of the surrounding buildings are 5m or more then it is classified as a Town site. All other locations are considered to be Country. The safe height tables and section capacities contained within the User Guide are based upon live loading from the intended use only. Additional loading may accrue on the working platforms or components as a consequence of atmospheric precipitations such as ice, snow, sand or dust. The working processes may also cause debris such as sand, grit or demolition debris to accumulate on the working platform of components which will increase the live loading above that allowed for within the live loading. Where this is seen to occur or is know will occur further guidance should be sought from the George Roberts (NW) Ltd Technical Services Department or a competent temporary works designer which may result in a down grading of the Load Class for the scaffold. General Notes Prior to erection all stair tower components should be inspected for damage by the erectors. DO NOT use damaged components within the erected tower. The system utilises fully galvanised components which will be suitable for storage in exposed areas and generally the components should be maintenance free. Should there be a loss of the galvanising layer such that corrosion deposits start to occur or the components are damaged during use or storage then the component should be returned to George Roberts (NW) Ltd for replacement. 20
