BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING (BIM) Getting everyone on the same page

WHAT IS BIM? VERB Building Information Modeling is a process whereby a building is modeled virtually, with much of it s associated information, to be used to help design and maintain it. BIM NOUN Building Information Model is a digital / virtual model of a building generated during the BIM/CIM process. These are relational databases with both graphics and data.

WHAT IS BIM? A foundational, intelligent model-based process for business and industry transformation Uses 3D models to capture, explore, and maintain consistent and coordinated planning, design, construction, and operational data Provides greater project insight for cost, schedule, and constructability Uses and shares the same consistent data whether you re at your desk or in the field Enables prompt response to change with processes that are smarter and faster

BRIEF HISTORY OF BIM A Quick Timeline BIM was first wrote about in 1975 Chuck Eastman, Professor at Georgia Tech School of Architecture The Use of Computers Instead of Drawings in Building Design Building Information Model term coined in 1992 Paper by van Nederveen and Tolman Autodesk popularized BIM 2002 white paper titled Building Information Modeling

BIM SOLUTIONS BETTER DESIGNS THROUGH ANALYSIS Energy consumption Heating and cooling loads Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Solar radiation LEED calculations And more

BIM SOLUTIONS MORE COORDINATED DESIGNS Allows the different design disciplines to coordinate their designs virtually Reduces costly design changes and change orders during construction

BIM SOLUTIONS BETTER VISUALIZATION To help stakeholders better see what they re getting Help contractors better understand the design intent Include more views in the construction documents, including 3D

BIM SOLUTIONS MORE DATA AVAILABLE Models can maintain this data throughout the design and construction process Data can then transition into building operations Specifications, preventative maintenance schedules, warranty information, etc.

BIM SOLUTIONS ACCURATE ESTIMATES Models can quickly generate very detailed cost estimates Bills of Material (BOM)

BIM SOLUTIONS MAINTAINING CURRENT DRAWINGS BIM is uniquely suited for this Models of buildings are one file with all the building data As opposed to many different CAD files Revit can manage who owns what down the individual element

BIM VS A 2D WORKFLOW SCHEMATIC DESIGN DESIGN BUILD OPERATE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS PRE-CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION COMMISSIONING / HANDOFF ASSETS (O&M) SPACE RENOVATION PROJECTS EASE OF ADOPTION 3D (BIM) 2D (CAD/PDF)

CLOUD COMPUTATION AND MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES The new way of thinking

THE OLD WAY OF THINKING +

THE NEW WAY OF THINKING CONFIGURABLE, FLEXIBLE & DEPLOYABLE MULTIPLE ENTRY POINTS OPEN APIS 2D THRU 5D DATA CENTRIC SINGLE SOURCE OF PROJECT TRUTH VERSION CONTROL SUPPLY CHAIN VISIBILITY INTEGRATED CONSTRUCTION PLATFORM DESIGN TO OCCUPANCY FABRICATION TO CONSTRUCTION OFFICE TO FIELD

THE CLOUD!

THE FUTURE Other Disruptive Technologies

TECHNOLOGY EVOLUTION DESKTOP & CLOUD MOBILE & CLOUD APPS INTEGRATED PLATFORM NOW

DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES Prefabrication 3D Printing Robots Laser Scanning Reality Capture Drones Augmented Reality

THE PATH FORWARD Technology Revolution Has Just Begun! Buildings will not be CONSTRUCTED but ASSEMBLED PROJECT MANAGEMENT will shift towards INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

FUTURE OF CONST. MGMT.

QUESTIONS? Some Final Thoughts Most people are resistant to change Involve Team early on any changes that are coming Inspire staff to step out of the box To bring about change you must take action Collaboration Collaboration Collaboration /in/saurabh-gangwar/ * saurabh.gangwar@caddmicrosystems.com
