5 PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL RESOURCE SURVEY FORM NARRATIVE SHEET 89C Survey Code 012 Tax Parcel / Other No County Chester 029 Municipality Kennett Township Address 307 Kennett Pk. Historic / Other Name Mendenhall, J.R. Farm PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 1): This property is located in the east central part of Kennett Township, on the east side of Kennett Pike south of the intersection with Hillendale Road. The 14.6-acre property is moderately wooded and drains to the southeast. A long drive leads northeast from Kennett Pike to the center of a cluster of historic resources: a farmhouse, an old stone house, and two frame outbuildings. The architecture here appears to meet National Register criteria for architectural significance (Class2). The farmhouse is located near the end of the property drive. It is a multi-additive building consisting of a Penn Plan core flanked by late 19 th century additions. Key features of the house include the massing and fenestration of the sections, the roof pitches, and the pent on the core. The building faces WSW, but for ease of description it will be considered to face west. 1. West Section: the 2-story, 3-bay section first visible from the property drive. This section has the highest ridge of all sections. a. Roof: end-gabled, clad with wood shingles. A small square banded brick chimney is located near the north end of the ridge. The building features overhanging eaves. b. Walls: frame, clad with German siding. Fenestration is symmetrical. Windows are mostly 2x2 with louvered shutters on the second floor and 6x9 with 2-paneled shutters on the first floor. i. Main (west) elevation: the side facing the road. It has three bays on both floors. The entrance is located in the center bay, first floor; it consists of a paired French door with eight inset lights and a slightly protruding surround. ii. North and south elevations: attic level has two small 1x1 windows with louvered shutters. Second floor has larger 2x2 windows with louvered shutters. No windows on first floor. iii. East elevation: no exposed windows. c. Foundation: stone 2. Penn Plan Section: the 2-story, 2-bay section on the east end of the core. It has a slightly lower ridge than the core. a. Roof: end-gabled (cross-gabled to the core), clad with wood shingles. A large stuccoed chimney is located near the east end of the ridge. Boxed cornice. b. Walls: stone. The south elevation has a pent roof clad with wood shingles, and the wall surface above the pent is stuccoed. The small area on the east elevation not covered by the east section is clad with narrow clapboards. Fenestration is slightly asymmetrical in keeping with early Penn Plan buildings in which the windows and doors are slightly clustered into the center of the elevation. i. Main (south) elevation has two bays. Second floor has two 6x6 windows with louvered shutters. Below the pent is a door and 6x6 window with 2- paneled shutters.

6 PENNSYLVANIA HISTORICAL RESOURCE SURVEY FORM NARRATIVE SHEET 89C Survey Code 012 Tax Parcel / Other No County Chester 029 Municipality Kennett Township Address 307 Kennett Pk. Historic / Other Name Mendenhall, J.R. Farm PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 2): ii. Rear (north) elevation extends past the north wall of the west section. The wall surface here is frame, clad with clapboards. A centered 2x2 window is located on the second floor. c. Foundation: stone. 3. East section: a second Penn Plan-like section on the east end of the Penn Plan section just described. This section has a slightly lower ridge than the previously described section but has the potential to be very old. a. Roof: end-gabled, clad with wood shingles. Boxed cornice. b. Walls: stucco over stone. Fenestration is asymmetrical. Windows are 3x6 units. i. South elevation has a centered 3x6 window with louvered shutters on the second floor. The first floor has a deeply recessed door and a 3x6 window with 2-paneled shutters. ii. East elevation faces the stone building. It has a rectangular attic louver in the peak of the gable. The second floor has two windows, and the first floor has what appears to be the location of a bake oven and another deeply recessed door. c. Foundation: stone d. A shallow addition is located on the north elevation of the section. It has a shed roof and stuccoed walls. It is a bank section, so that its first floor is on the same level as the second floor of the other house sections. A 6x6 window is located on the east elevation, and a door is located on the north elevation. The stone building is located northeast of the farmhouse. It appears to be a quite old farmhouse, possibly a precursor to the farmhouse just described. Key features of the building include its steeply pitched roof, its corner chimney, and its massing. 1. Core: the 1-story stone section (with loft). The building faces southwest. a. Roof: end-gabled, clad with wood shingles. A brick chimney is located in the north corner. The house features a boxed cornice with overhanging eaves on the end walls. b. Walls: rubble stone. Most of the main (southwest) elevation is obscured by the addition. The southeast elevation has a rank of sealed windows in the center of the elevation: one on the attic level, first floor, and basement level. c. Foundation: stone Addition: the 1-story section on the main (southwest) elevation of the core. It has a gently pitched roof clad with wood shingles. The walls are stuccoed, with clapboards above the eaveline on the southwest elevation. Fenestration is asymmetrical. The main

Historic / Other Name Mendenhall, J.R. Farm PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION (page 3: 2. elevation has a 6-light window and a 4-paneled door; the southeast elevation has an offcenter 6-light window. The foundation is stone. The north frame outbuilding is located south of the farmhouse. It is a 1-story front-end-gabled building. Its roof is clad with wood shingles, and the walls are clad with clapboards. The main (northwest) elevation has two batten sliding doors sealing the interior. The side walls have a narrow horizontal window. The foundation material was not noted. The south frame outbuilding is the larger of the two outbuildings. It appears to be a stable or small barn. The 1.5-story building has a front end gabled orientation, facing northwest. 1. Roof: front-end-gabled, clad with wood shingles. An extended gable is located on the main elevation. 2. Walls: frame, clad with clapboards. The main elevation has a batten loading door under the extended gable and two large sliding doors on the lower level. 3. Foundation: not noted.
