Barrier in PE Films with a Focus on Recycle Chris Cometa September 12, 2017

Plastic The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. Plastic accounts for around 10 percent of the total waste we generate. Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute. Virtually every piece of plastic that was ever made still exists in some shape or form (with the exception of the small amount that has been incinerated). Laminations / Coextruded Films often lead to Recycle codes of mixed plastics which is making this trend even more problematic. 3 New Approach for Recycle How2Recycle Label A project initiated by the Sustainability Packaging Coalition (SPC) in conjunction with Brand Owners Purpose: To create a standardized labeling system that clearly provides onpackage recycling instructions to the public Store Drop Off Bins for The How2Recycle Label Resin Identification Code #2 Resin Identification Code #4 For more information on local collection sites & other recycling questions, go to 3

Store Drop-Off How2Recycle How2Recycle is a standardized labeling system that was created to clearly communicate on-package recycling information/instructions to the public 4

Definition Store Drop-Off A wide variety of plastic bags, films, and wraps can go in retail store bins. These include bags and films using Resin Identification Codes #2 and #4, and items with the How2Recycle Store Drop-Off label. However, these can NOT go into curbside bins (with a few exceptions). 5

Classic Stand-Up Pouch Structure ( PET // Barrier (optional) // Sealant ) PET Stiffness / Heat Resistance Typically Reverse Printed Sealant Good SIT / Hot Tack Ability to apply Zipper These webs could also include Barrier resins such as Nylon or EVOH that are built into the sealant web Other Barrier Options Metallized OPP or PET Barrier Coating OPP or PET Could be used as the Print Web All options have Recycle code of #7 due to the mixed resins that don t recycle together 6

Stand Up Pouch PE Pouch From Recycle code #7 to Store Drop-off. Printing Web High Density PE Film Good Stiffness Naturally Good MVTR performance Ability to Reverse Print Laminate to a PE sealant with increased stiffness for SUP production Surface Print a Stand Alone Web Properties Printable Surface Low Temperature Sealant Layer High Temperature OL is Recommended 7

Stand Up Pouch PE Pouch From Recycle code #7 to Store Drop-off. Premium Sealant Films Improved SIT and Caulking Maximize melt temperature from outside of pouch to sealant layer Multi-layer films allow the sealant web to incorporate stiffness Maximizing stand-up potential for the package MVTR Barrier Performance Naturally good MVTR due to the HDPE content of the film Optimized designs can drive very low MVTR as required OTR Barrier Performance When OTR performance is required, multi-layer films are designed to meet specification with EVOH layers EVOH is designed / approved to be used Store Drop-off by designing the compatibility into the structure 8

Example of a Rev. Print Web for Store Drop Off Reverse Print Web 2 mil Treated one side Secant Modulus / Stiffness MD 137,000 psi TD 167,000 psi Needed for printing MVTR 0.15 g/100in2/24hr 9

Example of a Barrier Sealant Web Sealant Web 2.5 mil Treated for lamination Secant Modulus / Stiffness MD 89,000 psi TD 90,000 psi MVTR g/100in2/24hr OTR cc/100in2/24hr Recycle for Store Drop-off 10

Stand Up Pouch Other Considerations Is this Solution Right for you and your Customers? It is a discussion, a process. There are differences that need to be explored Pouches Pouch Machine will need to be optimized for PE Structure Lower Heats Residence Time in Machine Graphic Considerations Gloss / Clarity Levels vs PET Snap Back / Registration Considerations 11
