14 Quality and sustainability British Gypsum is dedicated to a continuous programme of innovative solutions for architects and specifiers and works closely with industry professionals at all stages of the building cycle. These partnerships with clients, building owners, specifiers and designers, merchants and contractors have enabled the development of cost-effective ranges that combine traditional standards of durability, acoustic performance and quality with innovative design and aesthetic appeal. Quality Product quality is assured through the use of carefully sourced components and raw materials, high technology manufacturing techniques and rigorous testing to appropriate British and European standards. All British Gypsum ceiling products are manufactured under management systems which have been independently audited and certified as conforming with ISO 9001: The quality of British Gypsum products is supported by a rigorous testing regime at one of Europe s most comprehensive testing facilities, the Building Test Centre, at East Leake. This unique facility enables us to undertake both in-house and independent evaluations, testing building components and elements to a wide range of recognised British and European fire, structural stability and acoustic performance standards. 14

15 Environmental sustainability Increasingly, specifiers are having to take into account whole-life building costs. Building in a sustainable way is becoming increasingly important, as is the physical well-being of the building occupiers. The rationale is simple whole-life building costs can be significantly reduced by using sustainable products, which present minimal risk to health during their life cycle. The Dutch Institute for Construction Biology and Ecology has evaluated Gyptone and Casoprano products from an environmental perspective as Class 2b, designated Good choice, with scores of only 532 and 518 respectively. The glass wool reference is designated Class 1a, Best choice, with a score of 100. Steel ceiling tiles are designated Class 3c, Acceptable, with a score of See Fig. 1 From a health perspective Arteco Gyptone and Casoprano products are designated +, with no health risks identified during their life cycle. They achieve a superior rating compared with glass wool or steel. See Fig. 2 When selecting a product, it is fundamental that both the environmental and health evaluations are taken into account. Both sets of data need to be assessed in relation to each other. In this way, when taking the study findings as a whole, Arteco ceiling products achieve the best overall performance.
