5 Introduction Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry which reflects the unique mix of occupations and industries in Massachusetts is a tabulation of employment levels sorted first by occupation and then by industry. Figure 1 shows, for example, that: 390 computer programmers worked for newspaper, periodical, book and directory publishers; and 810 computer programmers worked for software publishers. 3.1 percent of all employed computer programmers worked for newspaper, periodical, book and directory publishers; and 6.5 percent of all employed computer programmers worked for software publishers. SOC Computer Programmers Title 5111 Newspaper, Periodical, Book, and Directory Publishers 5112 Software Publishers Figure 1. Sample Occupational Profile Breaking down jobs by occupation and industry helps to: Identify the industries that employ the most workers in particular occupations Track the effect of technological changes on the demand for workers by occupation and industry Create and evaluate job training programs Foster job development Based on survey responses submitted by more than 28,000 employers, Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry is an important tool for analysts because it eliminates the need to extrapolate occupational profiles from national statistics. State and national profiles often differ significantly. Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry VII

6 The data in this 6-volume set includes: Every occupation in which at least 100 Massachusetts workers are engaged Every industry that employs at least 1,000 workers in Massachusetts Every occupational/industry stratum (e.g., the number of lawyers working in the legal services industry) whose occupational percentage (e.g., the number of lawyers working in the legal services industry divided by the overall number of employed lawyers) equals or exceeds 1 percent Two systems are used to classify the 639 occupations and 347 industries covered by the present publication: The Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) System. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). U.S. Department of Labor The North American Industry Classification System (). U.S. Census Bureau Volume 1 of Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry breaks down the state s jobs: by occupation by major industry sectors and by occupation Volumes 2 through 5 break down the state s jobs: by 2-digit code and by occupation by 3-digit code and by occupation by 4-digit code and by occupation For a handy synopsis of the data contained in this series, see the tables starting on page XI. Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry VIII

7 How to Read the Data Occupational profiles are listings of industries and employment levels by occupation. Figure 2 shows the layout used to present this data in Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry: SOC Legal Support Workers Title 52 Finance and Insurance Insurance Carriers and Related Activities 5241 Insurance Carriers Figure 2. Sample Profile Occupations, shown at the top of each page, are sorted by SOC code. Industries, listed vertically below occupations, are sorted by code. The example above indicates that: 140 legal support workers were employed by insurance carriers in Massachusetts in. 1.7 percent of all legal support workers employed in Massachusetts in worked for insurance carriers. Two- and three-digit codes are rollups i.e., subtotals. Every worker in code 5241, for example, is included in code 524; and every worker in code 524 is included in code 52. Care must be taken not to inflate job counts by including rollups. Adding code 524 to code 5241 in the example above will cause the jobs in code 5241 to be counted twice. Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry IX

8 The same warning applies to SOC codes. SOC code , for example, includes codes , and as shown in Figure 3: SOC SOC Title Legal Support Workers 7, Paralegals and Legal Assistants 6, Court Reporters Specialty Trade Contractors 330 Figure 3. Hierarchy of Occupations Adding code to code , or will cause jobs to be counted twice. Massachusetts Occupational Employment Distribution by Industry X
