In preparing this standard assistance has been derived from Australian standard AS/NZS 1163:2009 Cold formed structural steel hollow sections. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers the requirements for hot and cold formed square and rectangular hollow section for Mechanical and General Engineering purpose This standard does not cover steel hollow sections for structural purpose, which are covered under IS 4923 : 1997 Hollow steel sections for structural use Specifications. 1.2 Section 1 covers general requirements applicable to all the types of steel hollow sections. Requirements regarding material, mechanical properties, dimensions, tolerances, and additional tests for each type of Hollow Sections are laid down in the relevant sections dealing with the each type of Hollow Sections. Any other special requirements may be agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer. 2.REFFERENCES The following Indian Standards contain provisions, which through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. At the time of the publication, the editions indicated below were valid. All the standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreement based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of these standards. IS No. IS 228 Method of chemical analysis of pig iron, cast iron, and plain carbon and low (issued in parts) alloys steels IS 1387:1993 General requirements for the supply of metallurgical materials (second revision) IS 1608:2005 Mechanical testing of metals tensile testing at ambient temperature (third Title

3 revision) 3.TERMINOLOGY For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions shall apply. 3.1 Black Section Section as manufactured, but without any subsequent surface treatment. 3.2 Exact Length Specified Length of a single section as mentioned by the purchaser. 3.3 Random Length Normal manufacturing lengths which may vary over a range of several meters, generally 4 to 7 mtrs. Alternatively a length range agreed to between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 3.4 Section It refers to one length of square or rectangular hollow section covered by this specification. 4 SUPPLY OF MATERIAL SECTION 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENT 4.1 General requirements relating to the supply of steel hollow sections shall conform to IS ORDERING INFORMATION 5.1 Orders for materials under this specification shall contain information as under. a) Method of Manufacturing (Electric Resistance or High Frequency Induction welded) b) Name of the material (cold formed or hot formed section) c) Grade YSt 160, YSt 210 d) Size (Sides and Wall Thickness) e) Quantity f) Length (Random or Exact) g) End condition and; h) Special requirements if any 6. MATERIAL 6.1 The square and rectangular hollow steel sections for Mechanical and General Engineering purpose shall be manufactured from steel made by any approved process. The sulphur and phosphorus content shall not exceed the values given in Table 1, when tested either by the method specified in relevant parts of IS 228 or any other established instrumental / chemical method. In case of any dispute the method given in relevant parts of IS 228 shall be the referee method. 4 Phosphorus MANUFACTURE 7.1 Tube Hollow Sections for forming into square or rectangular hollow steel sections shall be manufactured by one of the following process: a) Hot finished welded, or b) Electric resistance or high frequency induction welded 8 WORKMANSHIP 8.1 All section shall be free from harmful defects, reasonably smooth and free from loose scale and rust. Surface imperfection such as handling marks, light die or roll marks, or shallow pits are not considered defects provided that the imperfections are removable within the specified limits of wall thickness. Welded sections shall be free of protruding metal on the outside surface of the weld seam. Unless otherwise specified the edges of the sections shall be free from burrs. 9 SURFACE PROTECTION 9.1 Unless otherwise specified the section shall be supplied uncoated or with manufacturer standard Mill protective coating. 9.2 When the sections are to be galvanized the mass of zinc coating shall be as per coating class PG 240 minimum. 10. BASIS OF CALCULATION 10.1 For the purpose of the standard, weights and properties shall be calculated as per Annexure A. 11. DIMENSION 11.1 Sizes other than those given in Annexure B and Annexure C may be supplied by mutual agreement between the Manufacturer and the Purchaser. 12 STRAIGHTNESS AND TWIST 12.1 The Square and Rectangular Sections shall be supplied either in finished straightened or mill straightened condition as agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer for which maximum deviation from straightness shall be as under. a) For tube Hollow Sections in finished straightened condition : 1/600 th of length at the centre of the length. b) For tube Hollow Sections in mill straightened condition : 1/200 th of length at the centre of the length Twist shall be measured for square and rectangular sections as given in figure 1. The tolerances on twist shall be 2 mm plus 0.5 mm per meter measured in accordance with the figure (Fig. 1). 13 PACKING 13.1 Where Square and Rectangular sections are to be bundled for transport those shall unless otherwise specified, be secured together by rope, soft wires or straps. If other packing is required, it shall be agreed to between the Manufacturer and the Purchaser. 3

5 14 MARKING 14.1 Each Square and Rectangular section shall have the name of manufacturer and size designation suitably mark on it, alternatively, a label containing the particulars may be attached to a bundle of hollow sections Other particulars required by the purchaser may be suitably marked as mutually agreed between the Manufacturer and the Purchaser. 15.
