Test 1 Given a square or rectangular-shaped floor, which of the following is the correct way to measure a floor? a) Use a tape measure to measure straight down the middle of the room b) Use a tape measure to measure in a angle from one corner to another one c) Use a tape measure to measure the length and width d) Estimate the square footage of the room Test 2 In the above example, let s assume you measured your floors and for one of the floors you measured length=45 and width=30. Demonstrate the procedure to calculate the area to determine how many tiles you will need. Multiply length times width to get the area? Calculate area=number of tiles needed 2

Test 3 Looking at the following pictures of tools and materials needed to lay floor tile, can you match the picture with the correct name and description? Answers can only be used once. Drill Mixer with mixing paddle to mix mortar Square Notch Trowel to make grooves in mortar providing suction Wet Saw to cut tiles Grease Pencil to draw lines on tiles to be cut Square for measuring tiles that need to be cut Rubber Grout Float to apply grout Tile Spacers to place between tiles Margin Trowel to scoop out and apply mortar 3

Test 4 Given mortar, water, drill mixer, 5-gallon bucket and mixing paddle, mix the mortar and water according to the instructions on the bag to the correct consistency. Attach the mixing paddle to the drill mixer? Add cold water to the mortar according to the instructions on the bag? Mix the mortar and water on low until a creamy peanut butter like consistency was reached? Allow the mortar to sit for 5 minutes? After the 5 minutes, mix the mortar again for 1-2 minutes on low speed until the consistency of a good thick pudding was reached? Add water a little at a time if the mortar was too thick? Add a little mortar if the mortar was too thin? Test 5 Now that you have mixed your mortar to the correct consistency, use your mortar to lay your 12x12 tiles and put spacers down between the tiles. Use your margin trowel to scoop out and apply mortar to the floor? Use the square notch trowel to make grooves in the mortar to provide suction and place extra mortar back in the bucket? Place the tiles on the mortar, wiggling them side to side and up and down until the suction is formed? Place two spacers between the tiles? Test 6 After successfully laying 12x12 tiles, you should now measure the spaces smaller than 12x12 and cut tiles to fit in those spaces using a wet saw or tile cutter. Set up your wet saw and put water in the sump pan, making sure the water was above the pump? Or set up your tile cutter if using a tile cutter? Measure and make lines on your tiles that need to be cut, 4

making sure to subtract ¼ from the measurements to allow room for the spacers? Put on safety glasses and earplugs? Lock the guards into position if using the wet saw to hold the tile firmly in place? Or is using a tile cutter, did you insert the tile and align the scoring wheel with the point where you made your mark on the tile Turn on the wet saw and apply a steady slow pressure to cut the tile? Or if using a tile cutter, did you move forward with a firm pressure to score the tile and then cut the tile? Did you wipe the tiles and then apply them to the floor as you did in the previous section with the spacers included? Test 7 Fill in the blank for the following questions regarding sealing your tile. 1. When the outside temperature is 60 or cooler, tile needs to set for hours. 2. When the outside temperature is warmer than 60, tile needs to set for hours. 3. When tile has set for the appropriate number of hours, you should use a to apply the sealer to the tile. 4. After sealing the floor, the sealant should set for to hours. Test 8 Now that you have completed laying your tile, sealing the tile and allowing the tile to set for the appropriate time, you then applied your grout. Remove all of the spacers from the floor? Use the rubber grout float to apply grout to the open spaces? Use the sponge and water to wipe up the excess grout, changing the water as necessary? Allow the grout to set for 24 hours before applying the grout sealant? Sit back and relax, because you are done??? Check your answers on the next pages for the answers to the matching, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. 5

Check Your Answers Test 1 Given a square or rectangular-shaped floor, which of the following is the correct way to measure a floor? c) Use a tape measure to measure the length and width Test 3 Looking at the following pictures of tools and materials needed to lay floor tile, can you match the picture with the correct name and description? Answers can only be used once. 7 Test 7 Fill in the blank for the following questions regarding sealing your tile. 1. When the outside temperature is 60 or cooler, tile needs to set for _48 hours. 2. When the outside temperature is warmer than 60, tile needs to set for _24 hours. 3. When tile has set for the appropriate number of hours, you should use a sponge to apply the sealer to the tile. 4. After sealing the floor, the sealant should set for 12 to 24 hours. Thank you for taking this assessment. We would like to know your thoughts on the Laying Floor Tile Instruction, so please give us feedback on the evaluation on the following page. Your honest opinion is greatly appreciated. 7
