9 LESSON ACTIVITIES - EPLANATION Other Seed Shapes - Draw Plant Seeds - Plant Seed Stand - Create a Field Trip - Visit a local basic shapes. Cover the seeds (radishes sprout seed stand for pretend garden center and lines with seeds to very quickly). Optional: play and sell different spend time looking at practice making shapes. Collect seeds of all kinds to bring home and add to a nature table. (TF) Foods with Seeds - Investigate which foods in your home have seeds. (TF) Seed Investigation - Investigate and compare seeds (TF) Soaking Seeds - Soak seeds. Open them. Observe the inside. (TF) homemade signs, and any other materials that would work from around the house. (TF) Seed Letters - Write letters on a piece of paper. Set out a tray filled with various seeds. Children can use their fingers (or tongs) to place seeds along the letters. Caring for Seeds - Record the steps to planting and caring for seeds. Children can dictate the story to you or help write to the best of their abilities. Beginning Letter Sort - Sort (real or homemade) seed packets by plants the seeds grow into. (TF) Time Lapse Videos - Watch time lapse video of radish sprouting or a bean plant growing. Seed Mosaic Art - Set out various seeds, glue, and paper. Children can create all kinds of patterns and pictures using the seeds. (TF) Seed Shakers - Make seed shakers to explore sound and make music. (TF) Seed Sensory Bin - Play with seeds in a water sensory bin. See which seeds sink or float. (TF) beginning letter. Seed Rhymes - Brainstorm and record a list of words that rhyme with seed. (TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

10 INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They re meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They re broken down by subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly Seed Number Making - Place number cards out along with seed packets. Children can place seeds on the numbers or attempt to make the numbers out of seeds on their own. Seed Patterns - Children can use two different types of seeds to create patterns on strips of paper. Seed Sensory Writing Tray - Place seeds into a small tray. Include pattern and letter prompts. Children can practice mark-making and letter writing in the seeds. (TF) Seed Library Basket - Keep a basket full of seed-themed books for children to peruse in their free time. (TF) Seed Investigation - Place different types of seeds on a tray. Add tongs, magnifying glasses, paper, and crayons/ pencils. Children can compare and contrast the seeds, make other observations, draw what they see, etc. (TF-if adapted) Seed Journal - Children can keep a science journal to record their observations as seeds sprout and grow. Sensory Block Play Arts and Crafts Simple Seed Sensory Bin - Add various seeds to a bin. Place measuring cups, tongs, and containers within the bin. Children can explore, measure, pour, count, and pick up the seeds. (TF) Build a Garden - Encourage children to design their own garden with blocks or LEGO bricks. They can also design a garden shop. Add (empty) seed packets to encourage pretend play extensions. (TF) What Plant Will It Be? - Use a few different seed varieties to inspire art. Children can draw or paint what they think the seed will grow into.
