3 The Woods Hole Research Center Science, Education, and Public Policy for a Habitable Earth The Center has inigagves in the Amazon, the ArcGc, Africa, Russia, Asia, Boreal North America, and throughout the United States. Center programs focus on the global carbon cycle, forest funcgon, land cover/land use, water and chemical cycles in the environment. We work in collaboragon with partners ranging from local NGOs and research centers to nagonal governments and the United NaGons.

5 REDD and MRV IncenGve based policy mechanism being designed to compensate tropical nagons for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestagon and forest degradagon. The majority of tropical nagons lack high resolugon, satellite based maps of their forests. ParGcipaGon in REDD will require tropical nagons to design operagonal forest monitoring, reporgng, and verificagon (MRV) systems that are reproducible, consistent, and accurate at nagonal scales. Satellite based remote sensing supported by field observagons is widely accepted as the most objecgve and cost effecgve tool on which to base the development of REDD MRV systems.

31 Summary Our science and our capacity building is being undertaken at mulgple scales with stakeholders ranging from indigenous groups to nagonal governments. Our monitoring approach involves the smart integragon of field observagons with remotely sensed data at local to nagonal scales. IPs are in a posigon to be informed gate keepers of informagon about their land, monitoring their forests at the local scale while feeding MRV systems at the nagonal level. In countries where MRV systems are just now being designed, an opportunity exits to leverage exisgng and well organized IP networks to facilitate field data collecgon across large tracts of tropical forest.

32 Future Work ConGnue building capacity under the Pan Tropical Mapping project in Hold FORUM policy/technical workshops in the remaining six COICA countries in (Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Peru, Venezuela). ConGnue COICA IP REDD Readiness project with EDF in Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname. Partner with individual countries to develop nagonal MRV strategies.
