1 ATLANTA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 116 ENTRY YEAR: 212 Compartment Acreage: 1881 County: Presque Isle Revision Date: October 26, 21 Examiner: Cody Stevens Legal Description: T33N R2E Sec 1, 3, 1, 11 & 12. RMU (if applicable): Cheboygan Basin Moraines Management Goals: The main goal in this compartment is to conduct multiple resource management for the good of the citizens of the State of Michigan. Soil and Topography: The topography of the compartment is low wet ground on the west end. The remainder of the compartment is rolling ground with some low ground scattered throughout. The dominate cover types are aspen and pine with scattered hardwoods. The low ground is dominated by open bogs and some cedar swamp. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The compartment has some private parcels scattered throughout on the boundary. The compartment has some recreational use by ORVs & snowmobiles. Unique, Natural Features: Some species are present in and around the compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features. None known at this time. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None at this time. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Fisheries Concerns: Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is a mixture of upland and lowland forest types with areas of open water. Beaver, wood ducks, many amphibian species, and their predators (e.g., great blue heron) are common in this compartment. The upland areas have a rich shrub component cresting good cover for species like American woodcock and ruffed grouse. The mixture of upland and lowland creates a diverse compartment. The proposed aspen harvests will also result in increased food and cover for available for deer, grouse, and woodcock as well as others dependent on early-successional forests (e.g., chestnut-sided warbler, indigo bunting, and long-tailed weasel).

2 Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of coarse-textured glacial till. The glacial drift thickness varies between 5 and 2 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Devonian Traverse Limestone, used for limestone/stone. The nearest gravel pit is located within one mile to the northeast and potential is considered to be good. This area has had limited drilling for Silurian Niagaran Reefs. Additional drilling is possible. Approximately one half of the compartment is leased for oil and gas development. Vehicle Access: This compartment is accessed from two county roads: 6 Mile Highway and Co Rd 634. There are several two tracks for traversing the area. Survey Needs: None needed at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: There are many opportunities for hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing in the area. Fire Protection: Fire response to the compartment will be covered by the Onaway DNR office as well as the Onaway Township Fire Department. Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: by Age Class by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed s No Limiting Factors Proposed s With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth
