17 CONCLUSIONS AND COMMENTS 1) what are the most relevant hydrological processes in each studied region? Scandinavia Peninsula: Snow process and groundwater process Iberian Peninsula: groundwater process 2) what is the spatial variation of optimal parameters in these regions? The spatial variation was studied using 1000 objective functions for each step-wise of calibration and for each sub-basins. Each sub-basins was defined sensitive or not using parameters of descriptive statistic. Using only sensitive sub-basins, the optimal range of calibrated parameters was defined for each calibrated parameters Maps of optimal parameters was developed and assessed 17

18 CONCLUSIONS AND COMMENTS These spatial analyses are helpful in understanding and evaluating results of the step-wise calibration and to assess the physical soundness of parameter sets. The step wise calibration of flow has allowed to create robust large-scale hydrological models for all Europe On going at pan European scale we are studying the new calibration procedure to assess erosion and nutrient process, with particular attention to investigate how the connectivity between hydrological and biogeochemical processes across time and space affects structure and function of aquatic ecosystem 18
