5 Southampton Common east of the Avenue part (1). General description. A large block of semi-natural ak and Holly dominated woodland, situated on the north-eastern edge of Southampton Common. The site is a SINC and lies immediately adjacent to the Southampton Common SSSI. Management. The site is largely unmanaged apart for some very limited amenity tidying up and mowing of the rides and small lawns. Communities. (1). [MG7]: Lolium perenne - Plantago major grassland. The main rides and associated small glades. Communities dominated by a regularly mown amenity sward. There is very limited structural diversity in the ride edges, with the ride itself often quite closed in, dark and damp. (2). [W10]: Quercus robur - Pteridium aquilinum - ubus fruticosus woodland. As for (3) but edges with slightly more open and broken canopy. (3). [W10]: Quercus robur - Pteridium aquilinum - ubus fruticosus woodland. Canopy :- Moderate to scattered cover of old standard Pedunculate ak with locally abundant pole stage and regrowth Silver Birch, Downy Birch and Beech metres, 70%-80%. Scattered conifer. Shrub layer :- Grey Willow locally abundant on the ride edges, otherwise Holly dominates with occasional owan, Cherry Laurel, Sycamore, Cherry, Hazel, Hawthorn and Downy Birch metres Flora :- Ivy, Bramble and Nettle. (4). [W10]: Quercus robur - Pteridium aquilinum - ubus fruticosus woodland. Canopy :- Dominated by fine old standard Pedunculate ak. Shrub layer :- Scattered to locally frequent Holly. Flora :- Bramble dominated. (5). [W10]: Quercus robur - Pteridium aquilinum - ubus fruticosus woodland. Canopy :- Scattered old standard Pedunculate ak with abundant pole stage and regrowth Silver Birch, Sycamore and conifer. To 30 metres, 90%. Shrub layer :- Scattered Holly with locally abundant Sycamore regeneration and Grey Willow regrowth. Flora :- Bramble dominated. (6). Plantation. Canopy :- Late pole stage conifer with occasional Silver Birch and Sycamore. dominated. Flora :- Bramble

6 (7). [W24]: ubus fruticosus Holcus lanatus underscrub. Glade. Now becoming heavily Bramble dominated.
