1 Foreword Dear Participants, On behalf of the Centre of Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use - Section Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture and Forestry (SeTSAF), University of Göttingen I would like to welcome you to the DAAD funded workshop on Land-use change and conservation strategies for the Brazilian Cerrado at Universidade Federal de Viçosa in Brazil. I hope you have had a good travel to the venue and I wish you a pleasant stay at the Campus Florestal. I became the scientific coordinator of SeTSAF in August Our centre focuses on interdisciplinary research, training and education. This workshop - proposed by Dr. Jolanta Slowik - goes in line with our ideas of sustainable land use management, biodiversity research and collaboration. We are therefore proud to administrate the workshop and moreover, we very much appreciate the efforts of the organization team and contributors. You will discuss a wide spectrum of topics related to biodiversity research and natural resource use. The complexity of ecological, social and economic challenges on local, regional and global scales needs interdisciplinary and international approaches to find answers for sustainable land use. There is a long tradition of research and education particular at the green faculties of the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Göttingen. They work in close cooperation with universities in Brazil and other Latin-American countries. During this workshop, guest lecturers from these institutions will give you profound background information of their research projects and intensive discussion points on challenges we face and ways forward. I wish all of you an inspiring summer school with valuable contributions and novel outcomes, and last but not least, a pleasant time together. Best wishes Dr. Simone Pfeiffer Scientific coordinator CBL-SeTSAF

2 Foreword Dear Participants, I would like to welcome you to the Universidade Federal de Viçosa - Campus Florestal. It is a great honor for us to host in UFV- Florestal, the International Summer School Land-use change and conservation strategies for the Brazilian Cerrado organized by the Centre of Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use - Section Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture and Forestry, University of Goettingen. Our young Campus is still in its infancy: BSc courses were first started in Florestal in 2008 and the single MSc course in Therefore, we believe that this summer school, the first International seminar in our campus, will be a watershed in the history of our institution, contributing significantly to its development and internationalization. Brazil is a megadiverse country which is suffering from alarming rates of habitat loss in all of its biogeographic domains. This is not only true in Brazilian prodigious tropical wet forest, which receives considerable attention from the media, but also in the Brazilian drier formations, like the Cerrado. This biogeographic domain suffered a habitat loss of almost 50% of its original area in a little more than half a century. The main cause of such ecological catastrophe is the uncontrolled expansion of the agribusiness, especially soybeans and cattle, commodities on which Brazilian economy is highly dependent. Brazil is still a poor developing country whose economy is largely dependent on its agriculture. Therefore, the main issues addressed in this summer school, sustainable land use management and biodiversity conservation should be the focus in all discussions regarding socio-economic development of our country. That is why we believe this summer school will contribute significantly to the formation of our students. I wish everyone a very pleasant and inspiring stay in Florestal, and hope this summer school will be an opportunity for the establishment of strong scientific cooperation and friendship. Universidade Federal de Viçosa Best wishes Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão para a Sociedade Brasileira Dr. Leonardo Lopes
