1 REPORT OF NATTUMAVIN THOTTAM CONSTRUCTION Just in the last hundred years, man has wiped out most of the forest cover on earth. Youth Green Community and Bhoomithrasena club of Sree Narayana Guru College, Chelannur taken an environmental initiative to plant thousands of trees in college campus.the club members planted seedlings of Nattu mavu at Kalarikkunnu on 15 th July 2015 to construct Nattumavin Thottam. The objective of the programme is to conserve the indigenous species of mango trees for the coming generation. The programme was inaugurated by Prof.C.Vinod Kumar, Principal of the college and V.R.Sudheesh, HOD, Department of Malayalam by planting Mango seedling. In his inaugural speech,pricipal said that the tree plantation will help to reverse desertification, reduce soil erosion, restore sustainability and survive climate change. Mrs.Vinarsha (Chairman, Youth Green Community), Mrs.Bindu(Convener, Youth Green Community), Mrs.Shini.M (Convener, Bhoomithrasena club), Dr.Deepeesh Karimpukkara, Dr. K.S. Jayasree, Mrs. Sangeetha.G.Nair, Mr.Libeesh Kumar, Mr.Vineesh were present in the occasion. Club members planted around 500 seedlings at Kalarikkunnu.

3 REPORT OF INVITED TALK ON CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES National pollution control day is celebrated every year on 2 nd of December in India in order to give the honor and memorialize the thousands of human beings who had lost their existence because of Bhopal gas calamity. Department of Chemistry and Bhoomithrasena club of Sree Narayana Guru College, Chelannur organized an invited talk on Current Environmental Issues as a part of the National pollution control day observance. Mrs. Shini.M, HOD, Dept. of Chemistry gave the welcome address. She said that current environmental problems require urgent attention and she pointed out the odd-even vehicle plan introduced by Mr.Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi and the Swach Bharath Abhiyan introduced by the Govt. of India to reduce pollution. The function was presided over by Dr. U.Hemanth Kumar, HOD, English. In the presidential address he pointed out that major environmental issue that we are facing now is pollution and government charted out various laws, rules and acts to prevent and to control pollution. Mrs. Sheela.P.K., HOD, Physics and Mr. Hrishikesh, Chairman, College Union were offered felicitations. Dr. Sudheesh Parathakkatt, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, Zamorin s Guruvayurappan College gave the keynote address..he said that the major current environmental issues are pollution, global warming, over population, natural resource depletion, climate change, waste disposal, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, ocean acidification, Ozone layer depletion, acid rain etc. Development and environment are the two sides of the same coin and as our population grows, finding a balance between economic advancement and consumption of natural resources is a vital question that our country should address today. He gave the definition of environmental pollution and and explained the sources, causes, effects of pollution and solution to the pollution crisis with the help of video clippings. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Miss. Arundathi.P, Member, Bhoomithrasena club.

5 NATURE CAMP AT THUSHARAGIRI Bhoomithrasena club of Sree Narayana Guru College participated in a nature camp at Thusharagiri on 27 th February The camp was sponsored by Kerala Social Forestry Extension Division, Kozhikode. Forty students and three teachers were participated in the camp. The main objective of the camp was to increase the environmental awareness among the students through direct learning in the out -of-door. The club members reached Thusharagiri at 10:30 am. The first session was an awareness class on the biodiversity conservation of the forest and common environmental issues by Mr. Abdul Gafoor, Forester, Forest Department. He explained the methods and means for protecting the environment and the man s interdependence with the environment. He said that a human being required oxygen liberated through photosynthesis from fourteen medium sized trees in his entire life and advised that everyone should plant at least fourteen saplings. Trucking in the forest was done after lunch. It was full of joy and adventures. The students enjoyed the beauty of waterfalls and the wild life. Four forest officers accompanied the team and they gave a detailed description about the flora and fauna of the area. In the valedictory session students shared their experiences and took an oath regarding environment protection. The nature camp helped the students to deepen their appreciation of nature and awakened the spirit of adventure through trucking.
