2 As of August 2014, the project had provided improved water supply to more than 6.6 million people (57% of the target of 11.6 million) and improved sanitation facilities to more than 3.3 million people (45% of the target of 7.4 million) in about 8,200 villages. The sanitation interventions focus on behavior changes that have enabled communities to adopt sanitation awareness and hand washing campaigns, improve sanitation facilities and programs in schools, and become open defecation free. Since January 2014, the Bank-funded additional financing has been implemented nation-wide in 218 districts spread throughout 32 provinces. The initiative to strengthen district BPSPAMS (Badan Pengelola Sistem Pelayanan Air Minum dan Sanitasi/village level water supply and sanitation management board) associations also started in 2014, and specific interventions are being created including intensive programs for 10 selected associations. The interventions are focusing on increasing district association capacity to enable them to provide long term support for village level boards. On April 30, 2014, DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, formerly AusAid) Additional Financing of US$44 million was approved to support additional technical assistance for the overall project outcomes through substantial capacity building, including for the sanitation component (Component 1) and technical assistance (Component 3) for the parent project as well as contributing directly to an increase in the core village grant activities (Component 2).
