1 SUMMARY: The goal of the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCPN) in regards of the grasslands is to make them ecologically sustainable and economically viable. This product will allow Natural Resource coordinators to monitor and evaluate the health and sustainability of the VCPN grasslands. It will display the information in a visually explicit manner. The output from this product will be important to the framework of other Spatial Information Products (SIP s). This product will consist of two maps showing the natural vegetation and areas affected by grazing. These maps will allow analysis of past and present conditions of the grasslands so that proper steps may be taken to restore and maintain them.

8 COSTS: (To produce product using existing methods) HOURS $ COST LABOR Professional Technical MATERIALS: TOTAL COST: PROGRAM/PROCESS RELATED: Landscape Stewardship (from VCNP Framework: Programs and Goals): This program is responsible for all efforts regarding all aspects of the natural resources within the reserve, including: vegetation, habitats, wildlife, waterways, and cultural resources. Budget Total: Not Available

9 BENEFITS: A) Savings: Creating a map of the current vegetation of the Valles Caldera with a grazing site overlay will allow staff to efficiently monitor, analyze and implement programs regarding grasslands restoration. This will save the VCNP both time and money. B) Benefits to Agency: There will be increased efficiency and understanding regarding the restoration of the VCNP grasslands. Also, this SIP may be shared with the Ranch Foreman, Landscape Architects and Hunt Coordinator. This SIP has many uses regarding different departments, allowing the agency to reduce the number of SIP s required, thereby reducing the cost of producing SIP s. C) Future and External: This map will be beneficial to the restoration and maintenance of the VCNP grasslands. Grazing sites and vegetation will have to be updated as they are changed. Grazing sites will be moved around to prevent overgrazing, and the vegetation will change as programs are implemented to improve and maintain the health of the VCNP.
