Mosaic burning Mosaic burning is diversity in burning over time and space. This involves diversity in fire size, intensity, time of year etc. It also involves diversity in time since last burnt. Mosaic burning on mostly involves burning areas of woodland away from the fire breaks. If done under the right conditions eg early in the year most fires go out on the edges of fire sensitive areas. It can also involve burning Spinifex in the wet season. It also involves not burning! Leaving areas unburnt for a long time.

Mosaic burning Mosaic burning also involves diversity in the time since an area was last burnt. This lessens the chance of hot fires travelling over large areas. It gives animals habitat that is burnt and unburnt. It gives some long unburnt country.

The Firebreaks Need to Join Up Fires in the late dry season when it is dry and hot burn any little bit of grass they can find. They will find their way through very small gaps in firebreaks Up along creeks that were too wet to burn earlier or They may spot over firebreaks to light fires on the other side.

Management for Threatened Species and Fire Sensitive Species Threatened species are plants and animals that are in very low numbers and distribution so they are vulnerable to extinction. Fire sensitive species are plants that can be badly affected or killed by fires. Both threatened species and fire sensitive species need careful management for them to survive and be healthy.

Summary Cool vs. Hot Fires Cool Fires Small Do not have the strength to burn into fire sheltered areas where many fire sensitive species are found. More likely to go out on edges of fire sensitive plant communities. More patchy leave unburnt areas for plants to mature and seed and habitat for animals. May only scorch plants so they survive the fire Less likely to burn animal habitat like hollow logs and animal foods like fruit trees Hot Fires Large Have the strength to burn into fire sheltered areas and cause damage to fire sensitive plant communities. More extensive burn everything leaving no plants to seed or habit for animals More likely to kill plants More likely to burn animal habitat like hollow logs and animal foods like fruit trees

Wildfires Wildfires are unwanted fires. They usually occur late in the dry season after the prescribed burning season is over. Wildfires have the potential to be hot, large and destructive. They normally burn between August and November Sometimes they will try and jump roads where they can be stopped with backburning Stone Country Fire Management - Wildfires

Wildfires The early burning of firebreaks and mosaic burning is the best way we have of managing wildfires. Good firebreaks have a high chance of stopping wildfires. However not all breaks can stop all fires in all conditions. Wildfires need to be monitored and managed to make sure they burn the smallest amount of country possible

Strategic Wildfire Management Monitor NAFI every day. If an unwanted fire starts. Inform all relevant people including DFES Make a decision about how to proceed. Try to put the fire out when it is very small. If not. Where are the firebreaks surrounding the fire? Are the firebreaks strong or do they have weak points? What is the best strategy to stop the fire?

Weak Points Weak points are areas where a firebreak is not strong. These weak points are areas to really be careful of if these is a late season fire in that block. Firebreaks are not strong in these areas due to such things as Low fuel loads that will not burn early but would carry a fire in the late dry. Perennial grasses that would not burn early. Rocky areas or fire sensitive vegetation that are not good to burn.
