1 NEWBERRY FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 60 ENTRY YEAR: 2011 Compartment Acreage: 1482 (GIS Calculated) County: Chippewa Revision Date: 10/26/09 Stand Examiner: Jason Tokar Legal Description: T50N R06W Sections 19, 20, 29 & 30 RMU (if applicable): Management Goals: Timber management, wildlife habitat, and recreation such as hunting and fishing are the main uses of the compartment. The goal is to improve the forest health, and productivity of the area through proper management to promote these uses. Treatments prescribed will help ensure the sustainability of the forest resource and continue to enhance the quality of the wildlife habitat. Mature stands have suffered damage from Jack Pine Budworm outbreaks. Management of these stands should be a high priority before additional decline and mortality occurs. Soil and Topography: The compartment is almost entirely Deer Park fine sand and the forest cover type associated with the soil is predominantly jack pine. Along the Betsy River is Markey and Carbondale muck with lowland mixed conifer as the forest cover type. The topography throughout the compartment is level to rolling. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The compartment is entirely state land. The land adjacent to the compartment to the north, east and west is all under state ownership. To the south is a mix of both State land and small private parcels. Land use in and around the compartment is primarily for recreational opportunities. Hunting, fishing, ORV riding, hiking and berry picking all occur throughout the area. Development in the area is minimal with the private parcels consisting of small camps and seasonal usage. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): MNFI lists the Potential for goshawk, eagle, and osprey. Potential for moose and wolf. Potential for wood turtle. Potential for Canada rice grass in openings associated with jack pine. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): The Bureau of History does not list any historical features within the compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: There are no Special Management Designations. Management activities near the Betsy River and Dead Creek will follow all BMP guidelines. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Fisheries Values Minimal. Fisheries Division does not actively manage any waters in this compartment. The Betsy River in this section and Dry Creek are both classified SQWW. The Shelldrake Dam has been repaired and the Flooding is at full pool. For that reason, the dam provides a lamprey barrier, and it also stops potadromous fish such as steelhead and salmon.

2 Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Compartment 60 lies in northwestern Chippewa County and is in the Grand Marais Sandy End Moraine and Outwash ecological sub-subsection. The compartment is currently a mix of young and mature jack pine with minimal white or red pine stands and a marsh type and mixed conifer stand along the Shelldrake Flooding which borders the east side of the compartment. Dead creek runs along a portion of the southern boundary of the compartment and provides an excellent wildlife travel corridor. The pine stands have some species diversity in them but not exceptional. In a predominantly pine forested ecosystem, maintaining a variety of age and size classes and maintaining as much structural diversity as possible in managed stands will be important to achieving wildlife objectives. For example, retaining soft and hard mast producing species in harvested stands will help provide food sources, nest and den trees, and improve structural diversity. Leaving understory spruce when it occurs will likewise increase structural diversity as will retaining non-pine species in pine stands. Wildlife species potentially using this compartment include white-tailed deer, black bear, moose, coyote, and possibly fisher, otter and mink. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Sections 19, 20, 29 & 30, T50N-R6W, Chippewa County Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Precambrian Jacobsville Sandstone subcrops below the glacial drift. The Jacobsville was used as a building stone in the past. There are no gravel pits in the area, but there may be some potential. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Located 10 miles northwest of Paradise, primary access is via the Widewaters Road (a county maintained sand road). A network of forest roads (two track sand/dirt roads) transects the compartment providing ample vehicle access. Several abandoned/closed roads used for past timber sales are also found throughout the area. Survey Needs: NE 1/16 of Section 30. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: There are no recreational facilities within the compartment boundary. Recreational opportunities include hunting, hiking, berry picking, wildlife/nature viewing, snowmobiling and ORV riding. Fire Protection: The compartment is part of the Whitefish Zone dispatch area. Large fire runs are possible because of continuous hazard fuel types, mixture of upland and lowland hazard fuels and long response times. Mixture of upland and lowland hazard fuels will reduce the access of heavy wheeled equipment for suppression adding to the possibility of large fire runs. Risk to private properties outside the compartment could be at risk to damage from fire. Averaging 4-6 sticks tall. Nicer timber in the NW portion fo the stand. Budworm problems. Jack pine with a small component of RP and WP. On average about 20-30% mortality on plots, up to 50%. Larger dbh jack pine are very limby. Prescribe stand for treatment. Clearcut with reserves. Retain all red pine, oak and white pine as residual. Some RP and oak may need to be removed in the northeastern portion of the stand for operability. MO of jack pine. leave oak, any spruce and some maple.. Retain red and white pine as residual. Clearcut with reserves. Retain all red pine and a few pockets of jack pine around the lower areas. MO of jack pine. leave some maple and any white pine. Leave spruce and oak in the stand post harvest. Completed 6/3/04. Scarification/cultural work completed as of 10/05 (42-542). Need regeneration check. New access roads built into sale need to be re-blocked. ***Regeneration count completed 5/29/08 = 262 t/ac (26 t/ac J <1' ht, 184 W, 52 R). Continue to monitor for success. Average residual BA = 20 (up to 60). *** showing some regeneration of JP, RP, and WP, mostly WP. Best regen is in areas of skid trails. Regen average 1-3 ft tall. High percentage of mortality throughout the stand (30% avg). Southern portion of the stand is limbier, more blowdown and open grown. Stand is showing a lot of decline. Prescribe stand for treatment. Clearcut with reserves. Retain red pine unless residual BA is too high (>40 BA) and will affect regeneration activities. In those areas, some RP can be marked to reduce the residual BA. Leave white pine and oak. Agreed to at the pre-review to not retain any jack pine due to the age and condition of the stand. MO of jack pine. Wld : leave a maple component, retain any red pine, white pine and oak (unless BA is too high on the west side of the stand). Scarification of site completed 9/05 (some regen was already established) - FTP # ***Regeneration count completed 5/23/08 = 191 t/ac (80 t/ac JP 1-2' ht, 32 RP, 16 WP, 16 BF, 47 Sp). Seedlings around 1' in overal heights. Average residual of 40 BA. Continue to monitor. *** J2, regen is patchy. North half is fairly open with pockets of regen 1-4 ft tall. Approximately 310,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: 1) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
