With key areas in the Bakken projecting some of the most significant population growth estimates in the U.S. and Canada, the highest industrial, retail, office, and residential rates in the U.S., and some of the lowest unemployment and vacancy rates, a need for increased infrastructure and support will be key to supporting the future development of this rural energy market. Although debate continues regarding the amount of recoverable oil in the Bakken, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there may be 4.4 to 11.4 billion barrels of undiscovered, extractable oil in the basin -- more oil than any other U.S. oil field, including more than Alaska s Prudhoe Bay, the longtime leader in domestic oil output. After declining 23%, current daily oil production has returned to prior peak levels. With transportation pipelines coming on line, natural gas production continues to increase.
