Bioenergy from forests research programme Antti Asikainen, professor Metla Finnish Forest Research Institute

Bioenergy from forests research programme Global biomass resources and production of biomass 2. Impacts of intensive biomass production and harvesting in forest ecosystems 3. Biomass harvesting technology, logistics and storage 4. Woody biomass as raw material for liquid biofuels and biorefinging products

Bioenergy from forests research programme Consists of 25 research projects over 50 researchers in Metla involved Total funding about 20 M Duration

OBJECTIVES To produce basic knowledge on the principles of biomass production for energy use in the forests and peatland To develop sustainable silvicultural methods for energy biomass production in connection with traditional forestry To Improve the mapping and assessment methods for energy biomass resources To develop efficient, new harvesting, processing and transport technologies and logistical solutions for energy biomass To support the creation of entrepreneurship and new business models for bioenergy To study the principles of using woody biomass as a raw material for liquid biofuel production

Examples on projects at global, European and national levels

Estimation of EU s forest energy resources Annually harvestable amount is 36 Mtoe (about 150 million green tonnes or 187 million m 3 ) Lähde Asikainen et al 2008)

National balance of resources and use GIS and forest statistic based estimation of biomass resources use of biomass in heat and power plants balance (resourcesuse) Similar studies conducted e.g. in Spain, Russia, Uruguay and France

Impacts of intensive biomass use on forests Impacts on soils Silvicultural treatments and forest management Impacts on growth Surface vegetation Forest fires, insect damages etc. Recreational use of forests

Survey methods of bioenergy use Nationwide survey every year plants using wood fuels volumes used by sources sawmill residues forest residues imported wood pellets recycled wood
