CLIMATE CHANGE INDUCED VEGETATION SHIFTS IN EUROPE ÁGNES GARAMVÖLGYI Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Mathematics and Informatics H-1118 Budapest, Villányi út

CONTENTS Objectives Material and methods Results the Alps and Switzerland Scandinavia Western Europe Southern Europe Central Europe Russia Conservation possibilities

OBJECTIVES to summarize observed and predicted impacts of climate change on vegetation distribution all over the world (doctoral thesis) the Palearctic region the New World Asia, Africa and Australia to discuss conservation needs and possibilities main focus: changes in distribution of woody plant species, communities and biomes in Europe

MATERIAL AND METHODS review of literature (Web of Science) Europe: 36 articles + 57 abstracts (field studies, experiments, model simulations) according to geographical regions

Main trends: THE ALPS AND SWITZERLAND upward shift of the forest limit and tree line montane deciduous forests move toward a higher elevation, subalpine coniferous forests shift into the alpine belt, colonisation of the nival belt beech (Fagus sylvatica)-dominated forests replaced by oak (Quercus sp.)-hornbeam (Carpinus sp.) forests invasion by exotic laurophyllous species collapse of forests due to drought Conservation aspects: particularly vulnerable due increased rate of warming endangered endemic species summit traps risk of local extinction

Main trends: rise of the tree limit SCANDINAVIA extension of the boreal forest northward and to higher elevations a shift in dominance from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) to deciduous broadleaved trees emergence of non-native tree species Studied species Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa Sorbus aucuparia Picea abies Pinus sylvestris Salix spp. Advancement of the range margin 315 m 375 m 240 m 340 m m Source: Kullman (2002)

Main trends: WESTERN EUROPE forest transformation from Norway spruce (Picea abies) to European beech (Fagus sylvatica) Norway spruce: moving upwards and reduced stands in Southern Germany drought tolerant species replacing beech in Eastern Germany heathlands may be replaced by grasslands and bracken Conservation aspects: Norway spruce: big loser of climate change several forest functions are influenced negatively loss of ecosystem goods and services in heathlands

Main trends: SOUTHERN EUROPE overall decrease of forest cover (water shortage, fire) dieback of Scots pine, European black pine (Pinus nigra) and European beech shift from pine dominated to broadleaf (oak) dominated forests upward shift of species and decreasing alpine vegetation invasion is likely Conservation aspects: extremely vulnerable region extinction of endemic species

Main trends: CENTRAL EUROPE upward shift of vegetation belts and the tree line coniferous forests converted to deciduous forests reduction of mesic beech forests and Dinaric fir (Abies alba)-beech forests, increase in thermophilous forests increasing distribution of dwarf pine (Pinus mugo)

Main trends: upward shift of the tree line shrub expansion in the Arctic RUSSIA conifer species retreating northwards and to higher elevations invasion of the tundra by the taiga shrinking distribution of larch (Larix sp.) increasing distribution of deciduous broadleaved trees in the transition zone, birch (Betula sp.) and mixed conifer-hardwoods a new type of biome: scrubland may appear forests replaced by steppe or bogs

CONSERVATION POSSIBILITIES Aim: to increase resilience of ecosystems adaptation strategies should be specific dynamic approach to conservation is needed landscape-based conservation policy

Methods: CONSERVATION POSSIBILITIES reducing other threats (habitat fragmentation, habitat destruction, pollution, alien species, tourism) managed gardens (exclusion of competition from other plants) expansion of reserve systems ecological (dispersal) corridors maintaining connected and genetically diverse populations translocation of species fire protection or controlled burning restoration / creation of habitats manual seed dispersal, reintroducing pollinators adaptive forest management management of heathlands

Thank you for the attention! Reference: Garamvölgyi, Á., Hufnagel, L. (2013): Impacts of climate change on vegetation distribution No. 1. Climate change induced vegetation shifts in the Palearctic region. Applied Ecology and Environmental Research 11(1):
