The Stewardship Network was established in 1998 to build the capacity of organizations, individuals, and businesses to preserve, restore, and manage natural lands and waters. The Network collaborates with nonprofits large and small, governmental agencies and units, private business, and dedicated individuals to achieve that goal.
Webcasts are one of the many ways the Network brings people together. The Network also sponsors Hands-on Trainings Workday Workshops Local Stewardship Clusters Stewards Circles Stewardship Services

Overview: What is Monitoring? Adaptive Management Characteristics of Good Monitoring Qualitative vs. Quantitative Monitoring Some Simple Qualitative Techniques Some Simple Quantitative Techniques 8
What is Monitoring? Gathering of information on the status and trends of something over time for the purpose of directing adaptive management Research vs. Monitoring Research: statistical cause & effect, purpose is to learn how something works hypothesis testing Monitoring: no statistical cause & effect, purpose is to guide management 9
Adaptive Management We don t always know exactly how management will affect a specific natural area or species So we watch what happens and adapt our techniques for the future. Directing management with learning feedback Management Monitoring 10
Characteristics of Good Monitoring Purpose is to evaluate management actions and guide future management Clearly defined management objective paired with a clearly defined monitoring objective State the amount of change or trend that the project is attempting to achieve State the amount of change or trend the monitoring is attempting to detect. Long-term, repeatable, practical, & efficient 11
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Consider cost Perform the minimum monitoring necessary to assess management objectives 12
Qualitative Monitoring Meander Survey Photographic Photo-points, photo-plots, aerial photos Mapping boundaries fires, communities, populations Presence/absence species, communities Abundance Ocular estimates Condition plants flowering, birds breeding, etc. Habitat changes erosion, ditching, etc. Management activities dates, times, locations 13
Quantitative Monitoring Plots, transects, & point measurements Complete Count Abundance # individuals, density, % cover, frequency Condition # or % flowering, breeding, Population Structure # individuals in various classes (dbh, height, etc) 14
Monitoring Rx Fire Weather Conditions Flame Length Duration/R esidence Time 15
Scorch Height Patchiness of the Fire 16
Floristic Quality Assessment Tool to assess floristic and natural significance of a given area Developed by Gerould S. Wilhem and Linda A. Masters (1994), Kim Herman et al. (Michigan) Based on concept of species conservatism Estimated probability that a plant is likely to occur in a landscape relatively unaltered from what is believed to be a presettlement condition 0 = little fidelity to a natural community remnant 10 = almost always restricted to a high quality natural area 17
Mapping Location of fires Location of rare species Periodic maps of extent of invasive plant populations Locations of monitoring plots 18
Photo-point Monitoring Efficient (cost & time) Detect changes in vegetation structure and composition Permanent Able to address multiple objectives Equipment needs: camera w/ sun-hood, film/chip, tripod, target board, compass, tape measure, marker stakes, data forms, pencil, (metal detector) 19

Photo-point Monitoring Example photo-monitoring sequence from Highland Recreation Area March 26, 1999 (Pre-burn) March 26, 1999 (Post-burn) May 1999 August

Photo-plots 27
Insect Monitoring Qualitative examples Black-lighting & sweep-netting Presence/Absence Quantitative example Stem damage sampling for Culver s root borer moth (population size estimate from number of damaged stems) 28
Plot & Transect Monitoring Quantitative: measures plants or animals over time Generally more time consuming than qualitative methods, but provides more detailed information Good for detecting changes in frequency, density, species composition, & vegetation cover Equipment needs: tape measure, marker stakes (for permanent plots), sample frame, data forms 29

To wrap up: Monitoring is used to evaluate and guide management Measures tie-barred towards specific management objectives Why you re managing determines how you monitor Monitoring should be long-term, repeatable, practical, and efficient Many qualitative and quantitative methods available 31
